I was referring to using it at the wedding dinner or church.. And also during concerts and events..

My wedding experience tells me I dun need 70-200mm unless the couple's house is damn big lor. The only time I used it on wedding was in a church wedding. Nowadays, I dun bring the lens to wedding unless I'm inform there's going to be an open area or large indoor event.

24-70 f2.8 or 28-70 f2.8 is a better choice. Or use a prime like 50 f1.8 or 85 f1.8 for such situation. I normally use 50mm when I was using 20D, now I use mostly 85mm with my 5D. Nice bokeh compared to f2.8

 Good advice :D

Keep your money for now..

Sell your 17-85 and buy the 17-55 f2.8 when out

if you dun know what you want, you dun need anything.

keep the money in the bank.

Even better advice  Trying very hard :bsmilie:

Actually I know what I want, just that I cannto afford it :)

You shloud donate it to me to fund my potential 70-200 purchase :D

But seriously unless you use it to earn money, save it up :)

Upgrade your accessories:)

I don't know what other camera accessories you have, but $1k is not a lot and you already have a decent setup, so why not get some additional accessories to enhance your photography?

Eg. Better tripods/monopods and heads or additional filters or flash or or portable data storage device or upgrade your computer to help you speed up your process etc etc

Photography is not just the camera and lenses. It is a whole package of many things, and it is often quite costly.

I have almost everything liao leh :bsmilie: Upgrade computer definitely good option though.. My videos are taking a damn long time to burn on my current one..

Wow! I'm not even a quarter way to getting the accessories in my wishlist:bsmilie:

Seriously, I feel that in the age of digital photography, a good computer and software is getting more and more important in the photography process. Purist may frown on it, but I think a good picture can be created or enhance though computer to give a work of art.

For photos my com. still ok.. Only when I'm burning my videos, 1 DVD takes like 4~5 hrs

buy a 2nd hand 135 f/2L !
or...
buy a used d30 and send it to indo to make it an IR camera... ^____^

My main use of the cam. is for travel, a prime lens wouldn't be on top of my list.. Unless it was really cheap, like the 50mm f/1.8 :)

Wah you willing to sponsor? hehe f/4 version  Will be used for my animal/pet poraits...

I personally find primes troublesome because I mainly use my cam for travelling.. Can't be carrying so many primes and zooms around :) But I might get a 50mm f1.8 since it's relatively cheap..
I used to own the 50mm f/1.8 and brought it out on one of my trips.

Unfortunately, perhaps it was my skill that time, I couldn't find any use for the prime and sold it off at a hundred.

I must admit, its cheap, yes. Its good, yes.
Unfortunately, whats the use of a cheap and good lens when u have no use for it?

I like to travel as well. Personally, I prefer the versatility of zooms. One moment I can be shooting landscapes, the other moment I can be shooting street portraits. Even for a non-shopping guy like me, I dun like the idea of carrying a huge camera bag with my equipment in it. Thus I sold my Lowepro Toploader and thinking of getting a mininova waist pouch. Camera can go around the neck with a tripod on the shoulder.

My aim is to travel light, not heavy.

And of cos, this is the same set of equipment that I'll use to cover my part-time assignments (if any). So far, the biggest complaint I have from my clients usually involve the hardcopy print colours. Zero complaints and all praises where softcopy is concerned.

:bsmilie: I want to sponsor myself 1st

I'm also tempted by the 70-200L f/4.. But it doesn't really solve my problem in low light conditions.. Only reason I want it is because it is white color :bsmilie: and is much smaller and lighter than the f/2.8 version, which is good when I bring it for travel.. 3rd party 70-200mm f/2.8 is still more ex than the L f/4, then I'd rather just settle for the L

Let's see if anyone is willing to swap their 70-200L f/4 for a 70-300mm IS USM :)

My guess is that the 50mm f/1.8 would be good for potraits?

:bsmilie: Trying very hard to save it lah, don't say until like that :bsmilie: Progress package coming mah.. So got spare cash..

 But I can use the 70-200mm f/2.8 for local weddings, concerts.. Those low light conditions, which the 70-300mm doesn't fare very well in :)
The last time I saw the official photographer with a 70-200 f/4 for a colleague's wedding saw him use it.... ONCE.

I was shooting alongside and wonder... For that 1 shot, he's willing to break his shoulder. Really want to shout "Hormat Senjata!" and salute him with fighter plane roaring and artillery thumpin'. :bsmilie:

Maybe u're finding an excuse, but my personal choice for weddings are either a 17-40 or a more versatile 17-85. f/4? f/5.6? Low light? I rarely miss a shot cos the AF was hunting and hunting.

Maybe the rest of the guys have their preference for other primes & zooms I'm not sure. But that's my way. I dun really see the point of having a lens beyond 100mm for a wedding, especially if the church or ballroom is not like David Beckham's castle.

Yeap.. Considered the 5D + 24-105L path.. But knowing me, the money in the meantime would've been spent on something else :bsmilie:
How abt giving me the $1K instead? :embrass:
