set your camera to "A" aperture setting, and experiment and see what f-stop value gives u the required depth of field~ about f4 and above should be sufficient for the subject to be in focus and still have nice bokeh in the background, but still depends on the distance from the subject. just try different values and you'll get it soon enough~

qns here from a noob, i own a 50 f1.8 also, how to actually use it as a walkabout? i find that if i set the Aperture too low the focus of an object is too "narrow" e.g. if i take a head shot, from ear onwards is blur, what would be an optimum setting for a nice full body shot?

Wide auto focus or point auto focus?
Never use wide, its like an "auto" AF for you, it might not be accurate and AF on the wrong thing.

Use either local or spot.

but somehow . when i use local.. some of my potraits come out unsharp leh. =/ maybe i never focus on the face? i focused some pictures on the chest/ neck area

For portraits, always focus on the eyes.

my primary walkadr lens would be the 17-55 f/2.8.
secondary would be 17-85 IS USM
:)

i own a Canon EFS 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM... yhis is my walkaround lens ;)

i find that the canon kit lens 18-55mm is my most used lens, in good light. the lens is not heavy and takes images that are good enough for my purposes.

my normal walk around lens is a 20mm... other then that I will use zoom and that's 20-35mm ... I alway bring only one lens out for shoot...

Verticoastro, albertsy2, hansenhon ~ dudes, not sure if you noticed... this thread is in the Sony/Konica-Minolta subforum and its abt the Alpha mount lens we are discussing abt :bsmilie:

they probably didnt realised that there are other DSLR brands besides Canon

My 70-200mm considered? :P

I use mainly that kit lens when walking about. Pretty okay, but I wish I had something with a wee bit wider.

My CZ 16-35 for open/outdoor area's and my CZ 24-70 for in town/city environment.

I switch between my 17-50 and beercan on occassions. Have just got the 50mm 1.8 about 12 hours ago...

Sigma 50mm f1.4
