Minolta 17-35 and Tamron 28-200 3rd version does most of what I want to do. The beercan and the 24-105 stay in storage almost all the time.

bought a 70-300 a few years ago, but doesn't use it very often. Kind of regretted buying it :(

I'm using the Tokina 20-35 f3.5 as my walk about lens....from my old Minolta system...

with 100 voters, seem like most still have the kits lens 30%, then is the 18-200/250mm 18%, suprisingly no one have 18-125mm. Then it's the CZ 16-80mm and 17/18-50mm f/2.8, both at 16%. 24/28-70/75mm f/2.8 got quite some supporter also 14%.

Forgotten to list in lens like 24/28-135mm, 17-70mm and 24/28-200mm range. But suprise to see so many vote others also, may be other brands or lens not included.

you could use it for event coverage. the extra zoom comes in handy

mine is the classic Minolta 24-105 3.5/4.5 ... for me nothing beats Minolta Color! :) ....

Hope to buy 18-250 Sony lens.

Do you think it's worth $999 ? So far been quoted around $980

Hope to know if it's good enough for amature walk about lens.

I think the decision to carry lens for walkabout also depends on several factors like whether you have a prior objective, the length of your walkabout (overseas trip) and the time of day of your walkabout.

In addition, should rule out kit lens lah, if not kit lens sure overwhelming response because most have kit lens. So pointless to find out about that.

you can check out the tamron 18-250mm as well. the sony 18-250 is unofficially known to be the rebranded version of the tamron 18-250.

according to clubsnap posts, the tammy costs ~$700.

with this kind of focal length range, it definitely makes an excellent walkaround lens. i use the 16-80mm for walkaround, and many a times i find myself short on the telephoto end for candid or potrait shots.

Is anybody ever know where to get a used 100/2 Minolta lens? it's the best portrait besides 85/1,4.

raise a WTB at Buy & Sell, saw it occasionally there.

I guess in a sense of 'going outdoors and taking the camera along for the unexpected', yeah .... 28-70/2.8G. Marvellous lens, no compromises. (altough it is not a dirty word)

i own a 24-70 and it's great! But its rather heavy.

With so many options for walk around zoom...I'm not sure which way I'll go if I ever upgrade my kit 18-70. I sure wish the CZ16-80 or SAL16-105 were cheaper. The Sigma 24-70 f2.8 looks like another good option....sigh!

tamron 17-50mm f2.8 for u? ;)

walk around lens for me is the 18-70mm kit lens....
too bad the f/stop couldn't be smaller :(

About to be hit by BBB...

currently using KM 50mm F1.7 RS for a walkabout...i'd like something wider not necessarily a prime lens..

eyeing on these few..

CZ 16-80
Tamron 17-50 F2.8
Sigma 18-50 F2.8

which ones do u guys recommend?I shoot mostly street and the occasional landscape..Colour vibrancy is important for me..

i do see the advantage of getting the tamrons and sigma though in that i can get a tripod and/or flash as the CZ comes with a premium...
