camera support is one of the most important equipment but very often neglected. it's rather pointless to spend a lot on good lens, cameras, etc only to load it on flimsy support, resulting in hours of frustration and not to mention less-than-ideal pictures.

get a good support. you can go down to CP and speak to Mr Christopher, who is most knowledgable about tripods.

For 168cm height, a Gitzo series 1 or series 2 should be suitable. when using a tripod try not to extend the centre column, so perhaps the Manfrotto 190 is not that good. For the head, a Foba ballhead is pretty good value for money.

Altogether the setup should cost around 800

Pardon to different on that point. For low angle shoot, I usually dismount the centre column off my Manfotto 190 and then mount my camera underbenath again.

When buying tripod, also need to check whether the tripod can hold the camera at portrait postion. There is one clubsnapper (can't recallher name) who's manfrotto 190 cannot take her camera at protrait position and topple. So bringyour camera+heaviest lens down to the shop to try it first before buying.

what do you mean by portrait position... As far your Tripod and head is able to handle the load of camera/lens, it should be able to work for portraits as well..

However I am not sure about about Pro190 when the central column is mounted laterally, Dun know whether it can balance with a heavy setup. Gitzo also have one tripod where the central column can be changed to laterally.. Dun about how they balance.. mabbe some gurus can throw some light

Tripod capability is different when you mount your camera horizontal or vertical (tilted 90deg) on the head. Usually when mounting on "vertical" position, the tripod needs to be more sturdy.

Gitzo has a series that allows the centre column to be swing around. The construction is such that the centre column (if you'd call it 'centre' at all) is attached outside of the tripod legs, hence allowing a greater range of movement compared to what you find in most other tripods where the centre column just sort of moves up or down. This series is good for macro work and low camera angles without having to insert the centre column the other way round.

The 190Pro has a detachable centre column that can be mounted horizontally.

This is meant only for low angle work or overhead shots when the legs are spread out very wide so stability is not an issue in this case.

Hello, I still couldn't figure out how to mount the detachable centre column horizontally on my 190. Is there a special adaptor that I need to get to mount the colum horizontally? Care to show a setup photo? Thanks in advance.
