Which Lens would you choose for a Europe trip?!

Agreed with diver-hloc suggestions... in fact I'm been on this combination (5DMKII + 24-105mm f4 + 50mm f1.4) on my past overseas trips.
However should you are considering BUYING either Canon 17-40mm 4L, Canon 24-105mm 4L IS, Canon 24-70mm f2.8L

I would prefer a 24-70mm f2.8 in the long run, but of cos that me as I prefer a general focal length that is @ f2.8 over a longer tele (In fact I sold off my 24-105mm for 24-70mm after using for months)
Just a side note, 2K is not sufficient for a brand new 24-70mm f2.8 as the last purchase of mine (few mths back) took around $2100++
U might be able to get it less than 2k should you are look at 2nd hand.

Just 5D with 24-105mm… you'll have IS, 24mm is still wide enough, 105mm may be abit 'short'… but not everyone need zoom till 200mm. Maybe a 50mm f1.8/f1.4 for low light condition. Personally… bringing 2 camera is an overkill…

Haha thanks! But I have first get that Lens. :) but I heard at 24mm there is barrel problem. Isit distortion at 24mm?

Cause I am afraid my 5D would die on me. It's a second hand, and i haven send it for shutter check. :( so was thinking to bring 500D as backup.

Besides my fren could use it. Going in a group of 6 for a month. :)

IMHO… If your 5D is in 'bad' condition… then just bring your 550D and 18-200mm if you want to save weight (which I would)… or if you are willing, 17-55mm f2.8 or 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 … both lens have good review.

That's why have to sent to CSC for checking first. Cause I prefer FF for landscape. Have a 20-35mm, but canon discontinued the lens already. So just use this lens? Is it good enough?

Might be also borrowing a Nikon 11-16mm lens from my frens. Can mount on my crop body 500D

What do you think? Dun wanna spent too much, haha cause my trip itself already cost a bomb! Might consider 24-105mm cause I seldom take landscape in sg also, mostly portraits and macro. :) thanks!

No, 2K is more than sufficient if you're getting a brand new 24-70 F2.8 grey set with 1 year shop warranty. Found it selling at $1890.

5D with 17-40

Think 5D with 24-70mm f2.8 will be my choice. I toured Europe for 22 days last year using my 550D and 17-55mm f2.8 and never regreted it. The f2.8 will be very useful for shooting inside the beautiful but dark churches there. Just my 2 cents!

17-40 + 24-70 / 24-105 is good enough. Tele-zoom is really seldom use...

I see! Thanks! Agree on the thing u mentioned about church.

:) how is your tour? Amazing?

If down to only one choice and I am only bring one system and one lens I will probably just get the 5DMKII + 24-105mm f4

Ryan

24-105 on your 5D. The 7mm loss on the wide end may be easier to work around with... but may not be the case for the 65mm loss on the long end.

:Later,

From canals to architecture to mountains to islands then to shopping! :) Thoroughly enjoyed myself! Where are you going by the way?

That sounds like a very fun itinerary! Been to Paris and Rome before but not the rest. Do be careful Rome, Paris and Barcelona though. Gypsies in Rome are famous for pickpocketing. Paris is quite hostile to foreigners and heard a lot of horror stories in Barcelona. Do take the necessary precautions, keep your wits with you and enjoy yourself!

Me and my wife spent about $8k per person. Should be cheaper if we had not stayed in hotels but as it was our honeymoon we decided to surge. :)

Oh by the way, if you like LV, Paris has the cheapest price! Furla in Rome is like half price of Singapore prices the last time I went in 2009. Ball in Amsterdam is cheap too! Good time to buy if you are looking for some branded goods yeah. ;)

Oh by the way, start monitoring the exchange rate for Euros. When I was there last Oct Euros was at its lowest so everything was much cheaper! 2009 I went was around $2.08 SGD for 1 euro, last year was $1.74/euro. Big difference!!!

Haha I see. Hopefully we will know our way around. Language barrier.

I'll be careful. Have to look out for my precious camera. Haha

Thanks about the heads up for the branded good. :)

No prob. Most of them know English. Well except for the Parisians as even though they know how to speak English, they will insist to speak French to you. Snobs all of them! :S

All the best, have a good trip and take tons of photos!

Quite a good rate if u ask me. Haven't been updating myself.

The lowest I saw during that time was 1.69 to a euro. I kicked myself for not changing it then cos that was the height of the financial crisis in Europe and I thought it will go lower! I was wrong. :(

Haha anyway, can 24-105mm with flash can temporary "replace" 24-70mm f2.8?
