My thoughts..

Timbuk2 are abit "rarer" .. and a little more expensive thus in the young conformotive adolescent minds are more exclusive. They are also tough bags.
Crumplers are my favourite multifunction bags. built like a tank. a bit more range too as some of the sling cam bags can also multifunction as a school bag. And crumplers are easier to find..

forget about deuter their bags rip easily at the seams.. and around the zippers (if any)

Are you considering shoulder/sling bags or haversack style?

You mean deuter bags are still "in" and "cool" now? :bsmilie:

I thought Crumpler was the in thing nowadays. Just look at how many people are carrying them along orchard road. To think back in 1999, it was such a rare item. Exclusive even. Because 77th St was the only place that brought the bags in (were there crumpler camera bags already abck then? not sure... not into photography)

For my daughter, sling shld be more suitable?

For my son, either will do.

Buying two  None for myself!

Upper primary and secondary school girls these days go for those huge vinyl sports bag with the brand name, say Nike, on both sides. They are consider the 'in' thing as I believe that girls can pack their PE attire, windbreaker jacket, shoes along and still leaves plenty of room for textbooks, water bottle and makeup pouch.

Can put makeup in school nowadays? :bsmilie:

Adrian: why not ask your kids what they prefer? sling vs backpack. Or is this supposed to be a surprise gift for them?

No locker in school to dump the books? I recall my bag was almost always empty when I was in sec sch. :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Some of us even tore up the thick textbooks into chapters, so we could carry less.

LOL, some of my friends did tear their textbooks into chapters. But I left them under the desks in school. I had prefects as friends so they often give warning before there's a "raid" to confiscate books. Then it's time to look for a temporary hideout already.

"their backpacks are horrendously ugly" :bsmilie:

Agree! Kind of weired since Crumpler (thanks for the spelling correction!) products have the look and feel for the young and active ones.

I think Crumpler's Customary Barge actually looks quite good, except it's too big for most people's everyday use.

A raid to confiscate books. That's new! :bsmilie: Are you sure it was TEXTbooks that you and friends had under the table? :bsmilie:

Well.. some said the crumpler backpacks look like a pad...

Yeah, raid to confiscate textbooks, cos my sec sch didn't allow keeping textbooks in sch (probably scared that students never study at home?)

A surprise gift is a good idea indeed! Eversince they told me that there's no Santa Clause at Pri 5 I have stopped giving surprise presents.

I might grab a Nat Geo Earth Explorer for the boy. Not too loud in terms of color and looks. But for the girl, sling might be better and Crumpler could be fun.

For heavy loads, I tend to find backpacks (and when both straps are used) more effective in weight distribution although a shoulder bag will allow for better ventilation. I'm however not a fan of those air vent features esp in deuter backpacks as it somewhat changes the centre of gravity

well if your kids do not like to be part of the crowd(like me, i dont like seeing what i have on the streets)

you can try manhatten portage or chrome. both brands are durable(although expensive) and their designs are more subtle and understated.

my manhatten portage has survived my throwing around and my abusive use and still works very well. no fraying of the straps and the zips are still in great order, the buckle still snaps firmly, with a very loud click!

as for the chrome, look at their buckles and you will know why you are paying so much!

both brands can be found at the ishop in cineleisure.

word of warning though, its gonna cost ya! although its sub $300, more like around the $200 range for the chrome and $150 for the manhatten!

or if you really want something durable, my friends acme has been with him for 3 years and still looks new:sweat:
although its around $300+++;p

You will be surprised what schoolgirls pack into their bags these days. One of my relatives' daughter was caught having condoms in her school bags.

I heard from my uncle that there are no longer any new imports of deuter in Singapore. All the ones you see in the market are old stocks.

I personally would recommend you to buy crumpler cos it is very durable and it is very popular among teenagers.

Deuter wise, I will not encourage you to get it. The deuter nowadays are not as gd as before. The wax which they have behind the material flake easily after sometime, plus some models have very thin material.

Just my 2 cents:)

Cos crumpler are mostly sling bag. Your children might find the bag heavy, since the weight is now on 1 side instead of 2.

True. Timuk2 are a bit rare and expensive. If you want to get deuter, might as well get other brands that are being sold in sports connection. Cheaper and equivalent in quality.

Some friends advised me not to get expensive bags. Besides getting unwanted attention, getting stolen is also a possibility.

In these days with HDB apartment costing over 700k, $200 for a bag might no longer 'exclusive'.

My aim is for durability (key) as well as giving the kids some excitment about going to school (not key).

Thanks folks for all the suggestions and sharing.

After checking on Nat Geo's Earth Explorer, I am really tempted to get it ... for myself! :sweatsm:

Crumpler started in Australia making sling bags for bike messengers. My first one was bought 6 years ago and its still working like the 1st day I bought it. Just missed the time when I can custom order their bags and the logo is actually embroided onto the straps!!! Bring your kids to their outlets and let them try out the bags. You just have to make sure they get the one they like, durability is not a issue.
