What's the point of having kids?

the day i saw my mum so sick, lying on hospital bed, i immd regretted having children. If my mum had passed away before i had children, guess i would be childless now.. Cos e pain i had was unbearable, i don wish my children to feel e same when Im old n sick..

It's very normal for a guy to think this way. Unless you are the homely type. It's usually the ladies who want to have kids. Unless they are not capable of maternal instincts.

I probably won't have kids too, becos of a single most compelling reason: fear of what they may turn out to be. Its easy to like kids when they are cute and cuddly, but what if they aren't? Down's syndrome? Autistic? Abnormalities?

No chance of it happening to u? Pls don't count ur chickens before they hatch.

Or simply not as cute? I have an uncle whose not-so-adorable child is constantly compared (and contrasted) to a far cuter baby belonging to another aunt. Do you know how terrible it feels?

What if they fall into bad company when they grow up? Not as smart? Not sociable? Not athletic enough? Dropout of school?

What if they abandon you when you are old and defenceless? YOU NEVER KNOW.

No offence to anyone, and not to discourage anyone from having children, but at least for me, with so many uncertainties in life, the reasons for having children simply becomes less compelling.

I can understand , if the "object" is a pet or something else.
But it's like... its another human being on this planet.

Why do we feel the need to bring another being to this planet?

Is there... a reason to this cycle?

Could we live a fulfilling life in this world with another partner happily without kids??

This is true, which is why I always tell my friends and relatives, don't compare the kids. Esp infront of the kids. If the child already 18 months or more, they may not express it but they understand what you trying to say.
Even if the child cannot understand, their parents will.

Hmm... u mean we all have an obligation to share money with a human being that does not exist yet?

I dunno the definition of the word "selfish". But certainty if u do not have a kid yet and do not want a kid, it's not called selfish.

The kid did not exist yet, and if i want the money for myself, am i selfish?

Actually, i'm just trying to keep the argument going forward, I'm actually want a kid. But I just want to gather thoughts on ppl.. on the reason for having a kid.

having kids is fun and also tiring, unless u have one, hard to explain.

1. will u enjoy walking and fetching ur kids to school?
2. will u enjoy watching ur kids taking first step?
3. will u enjoy waking up middle of the nite becos ur kids wake up and cry?
4. will u enjoy the moment they hang on u when u reach home?
5. will u enjoy sacrificing ur time to spend with them? outings, eating, teaching them etc?
6. will u enjoy been unable to concentrate on work at home?


the above is just part of it. of course, unless u experience it, else hard to absord.

You shouldn't leave the house the, so many uncertainties: you may get hit by car, fall off MRT track, struck by lightning etc... :sweat:

I come from an old skool family where the cuter the kid is, the more we say he/she is ugly to ward off jealous spirits.

down's syndrome is also one of my primary fears, it can be detected early but it will more or less create some emotional strain on your other half if she needs to abort it, that's when you need to be there for your wife.

the comparing matter...unfortunately until now i'm still being compared to my cousin who is just one year older than me from (primary sch>sec sch>poly>working life)...frankly speaking, is not a very nice feeling to stomach and your parents just keep having the soup grapes. :thumbsd:

one of my younger cousin got involved with some bad company from my former secondary sch (same sch as me).
in the end, his dad left with no choice, filed a "beyond parental control order" then my cousin got thrown into boy's home.
apparently, my cousin also got some records for petty crimes under the age of 16.

The more i pondered, the more i think,... seriously, is there a point??

Is loneliness a good reason? (seems like it's a fear, rather than a reason)
To keep the marriage? (that seems even more like insecurity than anything)
To follow crowd?
Because that's what everyone does??
