My first camera is a lousy compact film cam, after which i bought myself a taiwanese brand compact camera, later on i got myself a canon compact and a 2nd hand EOS 500N film SLR, find that canon is reliable, i got myself a 350D and also played with 20D and 400D in my photography club.

When I first picked up a SLR, Nikon was the brand everyone sought after, it was what the pro would use. Canon introduce the then technologically advanced T90 in 1982 with body design from Luigi Colani. the curvy/rounded look realy stand out of the dull boxy body of other brands. but it was MF only, with the introduction of Minolta 7000, the world was shifting to AF. later Canon introuded the first AF camera--EOS 620/650...looks ugly, especially the pyramid like viewfinder/pentaprism; EOS750/850 were toy with only idiot-proof AE mode and nothing else; then out the EOS-1 in 1989, it had everything, from sexy body and every features one can expect from the 1989. but it was expensive and...I'm not pro! like most consumer, I waited for the cheaper prosumer and finally bought the EOS-10QD, a more rounded body that may pass as DSLR if I didn't look carefully. :)

since I am using Canon SLR and Canon still dominate digital camera like what they did in film, naturally, I bought a digital Canon.

There are some lenses that lead Canon into advantages, compare to other competitors;

85 f1.2
100-400 IS for outdoor sport
200 f 1.8 / 2, which is sharp at wide open
500 f4

And Simon Yap also.... :bsmilie:

Recently,I had a dilemma when it came to choosing between a Nikon or Canon DSLR .I did research and found out that Canon DSLR's are much cheaper than Nikon by abit. But yea I have never owned any Canon cameras before.I had a digital Nikon cool pix camera.Have been a Nikon Users.Had used film Nikon cameras before too.

Have a Canon 350D and Love it loads:heart: :heart::heart:

because my G3 allows me full control of exposure in a nice little package (at the time....)

I'm not a biased user, and I believe you should be safe with Canon or Nikon. Sony and Olympus are not far behind, and they are still in competition. All are capable in producing outstanding outputs, except they might be different in their gamma curve, which is the characteristics of its own. I like the red tint in Canon.
When I'm buying my first dSLR, most of my friends are Nikon users. The benefits of changing/borrowing lens with them doesn't make me join them. They are like Nikon ambassadors telling me how capable their camera are over Canon. And that turned me off. As I always believe It's the man, not the camera. I wanted to prove that I didn't make the wrong choice and got myself a Canon. Till today, I had never regretted my choice! ...and they never give up in telling me how good Nikon are, despite result has proven otherwise.

Poisoned by my friend

Ahhhh... Thanks for sharing. Nostalgic indeed. You must be a long time follower of Canon cams. :) I remember those great cams back in the 80's. I was just starting to like photography then. I remember how solid the Minolta 7000 was. There was an even more solid cam called the Minolta 9000 or 9 I think? Really a pity the Minolta brand didn't live on.

I've always dreamt of owning them but couldn't afford. Last time, it was really a no-nonsense approach to photography. People saved up to buy what they really needed and the main aim was to produce nice prints. Unlike now, where we tend to splurge money on many things we don't need and compare specs often for the sake of it. And sell it off all too soon.

It makes me wonder... if there were no such thing as DSLR, what would a modern SLR camera progress to? There won't be any bothersome thing like chasing after megapixels, better LCD screen, dust cleaning sensor, etc.

Hmm... maybe they will have super fast shutter speed? A solid Canon 1v body costing less than $1k?

I miss my EOS 3 and 33 that were obviously "Full frame" and were sooo affordable! For those not in the know, if you started off straight with digital, a very good "FF" Canon film SLR can be bought for a mere $600-800.

The present much more expensive 5D or 50D, for that matter, still can't even match the feel and solid shutter sound of the EOS 3/33.

Ok much said, I don't really miss film itself. So it's a give-and-take world.

Still dream of the day when Canon manufactures a full frame cam for less than $2k.

during 2001, want to buy a DC which using AA battery and LCD can rotate.. only Canon A80 has. so.. buy A80

then when want to change from Canon Film SLR to DSLR.
1. Nikon too heavy for me
2. the hand hold too big for me. Only Canon my hand can fix in
3. share my existing Lens

So.. Canon again..

Initially wanted to get a Nikon 90D but it's 'Made in Thailand'. Pretty disappointed. So I got myself a 50D. PLus the white L series lens looks really cool! :)

Loved the colour on Canon Point & Shoots so i thought the bigger ones would be even better! :D Now i know Nikons also have decent colour and maybe slightly sharper to boot! But Im sticking with Canon just because.

I once asked a friend: " Between Canon and Nikon, which is better?"

His answer: "I don't know how to answer you. But if u watch english premier league, you will notice that most of cameramen are using white lenses? So, I guess they have answered your question."

What made me a Canon user? Because I use Canon loh.....

I guess it's a hard habit to break. :dunno:

I choosed 'Just another Brand', because I'm not a brand loyalist. However, the main reason I'm staying is the lens. 50 1.2, 85 1.2, 135 f2, 35 1.4, I will missed all these lens if I crossed over to the other side. Do I get any better bodies in other brand, not really. So, there isn't a very compelling reason to switch. If there is one day all camera maker converge to common mount and retain full functionality, that will be a different story.

bought Olympus DC in 2003 . Then bought a Canon Ixus 40 DC. Found that their software quite user frendly and ease of use.

When switching to DSLR , decided to stay in canon system mainly for their great customer service and also their excellent software .
Bought my 400D and looking to make a purchase of 5DM2.

canon come out 300D first ...
after invest in lens and all thing ...
there is no way back for now!! :embrass:

I had initially wanted to get a D90 but switched over to Canon 50D cause it's 'Made in Japan'. But of course I've grown to like the Canon more and more. :)

And 1 more thing, I love the 'no nonsense' full black bodies of Canon dslr's.

Well, I am a recent Canon convert, having sold off my whole Nikon system except for my trustworthy FM2 and 50mm f/1.4 Ai-S, and I must say that the decision was two-fold. First, I was very impressed at Canon's color handling and second, of course, is the beauty of L lenses - in its imaging, design and construction.

I decided not to get the 5DM2, I got a 5D instead - with a 17-40mm f/4L and a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.

I have never regretted it, and my 70-200mm produces just superb photos. The other day I was walking along the laneways of Melbourne and I took some shots, and when I blew it up on my computer screen, it almost seemed like a 'window' to the actual space that I photographed: super sharp and the colors were very well rendered. At f/2.8 the bokeh was beautiful. Vignetting was a bit evident on a full frame but it interacted with the 'feel' of the laneway.

=)
