I once asked a friend: " Between Canon and Nikon, which is better?"

His answer: "I don't know how to answer you. But if u watch english premier league, you will notice that most of cameramen are using white lenses? So, I guess they have answered your question."

Yes, most of the professional photographers might be using Canon's EOS system. But that's due to an era where Nikons AF is slower than Canon's. After which Nikon managed to catch up, most of the photographers have already switched to Canon's EOS system. I read it somewhere.

So to say, Nikon's top of the line dslr is just as good as Canon's EOS system today. Just that Nikon never managed to get back the same clientele that they used to have due to the era of slow AF. Sorry my story is abit vague maybe someone more experienced is able to post a link to www.kentrockwell.com's website that says this. I have no time to search.

Thanks

i used to have 2 piles of A4 canon plain paper on my work desk to stage my mp3 player and travel speaker many years back BEFORE i intend to go into DSLR photography (i owned a pentax film camera).
the contrast between the canon and background (simply red background and white canon wording) color is simple but impressive. the word canon had drilled into my mind.
this the reason and why i brought 400D last year.
not regret in owning one till now
only regret can't afford higher grade camera and lens :(

I have been a Canon user since the film days during the early 1990s. I chose Canon bcos of it's user friendly layout and ease of use then as an amature photographer. I hesitated to switch to dslr when the dslr era started as I still love my trusty Canon film camera back then as it had been serving me well. It was only a couple of years back that I started to switch to dslr and that was bcos of the diminishing popularity as well as the lack of support for film cameras and the rapid expansion of the digital era. :D

I finally decided to make the switch to dslr and decided to give Nikon a try for it's reputed ruggedness and superior Speedlites. :nono: It was a decision that I had regretted as I found out that Nikon's superiority was short-live and only in the film era while on the other hand, Canon is gaining momentum and popularity in the digital camera domain and their Speedlite technology has improved to revel Nikon's, if not better. Furthermore, when it comes to dslr, Canon has the upper hand with it's faster AF, grest USM Lenses and are market leaders in their EOS System as well as IS technology  before Nikon follows suit later.

Moreover, I am more used to Canon's ease of use and ergonomics as well as the rugged feel of their dslr bodies compared to Nikon.

I knew nuts about photography and came to CS to learn. Naturally surfed Canon threads first as it is placed right at the top before other brands. Was intrigued and bought a 40D...;)

Hi Friends,

I was a totally newbie for DSLR. One of my friend recommended to by Canon. But when i was buying i was in half mined. Coz my mind set was towards another brand. Now i feel i have made the correct choice and thankful to my friend.

I like Canon after sales service, even though out of warranty as long have the cash can send for servicing no matter how old it is.

for me, its the control of the body.

my style of shooting, i need to change settings fast,
esp iso, shutter speed n aperture.
can't do that using the other popular brands or even canon's 1 series.

owned 20D, 40Ds n 5Ds.
love them all, esp the 20D :)

I started with eos50, loved the thumb dail, and the direct control knobs & swtiches:

if link doesnt work try copy & paste mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/eos/eoscamera/EOSElanIIE5055/index.htm

As for dslr, when I started with eos350d, didnt like the buttons & toggling of menu to change Meter & Drive mode....as I was used to the eos50(film) control was more of feel it & switch, rather than take your eyes from the viewfinder to toggle the menu on LCD screen. I find that too slow & troublesome, as compared to eos50(elan). I could quickly switch to Partial metering in changing light, change AF to Servo to track a fast object (turn knob), or switch to continuous drive with a flick of a thumb. Not only the switching, but also feel which Metering mode & Drive Mode I am in.
(quoting from: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/nikon-vs-canon.htm)
"I love my Nikons because they put the important adjustments, ISO, DRIVE, WHITE BALANCE and QUALITY, right where I need them. I don't need any menus to tweak them, and I need to adjust them many times each day as the light and subjects change. Canon hides more of this, like manual and trimmed white balances, in menus, which gets in my way. "

Although I got used to it, and concentrated on shooting, I still think the control format from eos50(elan) was more direct, almost like "jet-fighter pilot" without taking eyes off the H.U.D. (Head-Up-Display).

Probably the buttons on digital eos, are more suited for ruggedness & weather sealing....& lower cost of production without compromising the ruggedness & durability. compared to knobs & switches, which might be more prone to wear & tear....or simply becos it is like another "electronic gadget" which should have less mechanical parts.

Canon's Thumb-Dial is fast & easy "swear-by-it ", very well-positioned control.

As for the other controls, the AF point selector ("mini-joystick" above the thumb dial), is definitely more responsive & easier to operate, more comfortable than nikon's 4 directional pad.

However, the controls like metering mode is better in Nikon's Dxxx, just a flick of a switch. (although entry/ mid- level models' controls are still the same concept for both C & N, which need to press a button & toggle by another button or dial e.g. Nikon's Dxx, Canon's xxD & xxxD)

Nikon's QUAL button for checking the resolution is quick & convenient, compared to zooming in & out on Canon, besides changing the resolution & changing to RAW fast.

I still hope Canon make DSLRs with controls like that of the eos50elan....didnt happen in 50D...:(

Speaking of the thumb-wheel of the Canon, my opinion is that, this is one feature that is keeping Canon folks stay put in Canon-land (the other being the cost of switching over). Whenever I pick up a Nikon, even a D3, I find it feels weird - because it doesn't have a thumb-wheel behind - just simply cannot get use to the flimsy rubbery d-pad + that rear dial of Nikons ! That's me .... simply loved the thumb wheel :)

ironically i started my photography with Nikon.. but when i became serious with photography, i was all Canon. :D

of course ergonomics and lens-expansion is also a consideration..

No choice. My best friend was given a Nikon and since we can't have the same brand of anything (me Adidas him Reebok) I had to get a Canon.
Ok, that and i had a Canon P&S whose colour rocked my world!

I used to own Minolta Dynax cameras and found that the lenses available to me were severely limited compared to Canon and Nikon. After my entire camera collection got stolen, it took me some time to save up for another SLR. 4 years later, I purchased a Canon SLR as Canon seems to offer the best technology in AF and I couldn't afford the prices of the DSLR back then. So I'm sort of bought into Canon due to my legacy equipment.

There are pros and cons of going with either leading DSLR brands, I sought of like the low ISO of the Nikon high end series. Then again, I am not prepared to part with so much money. So I am sticking with Canon and hoping that i win the lottery :-)

at the moment, mainly it's the great L primes only, not zooms.

other than that, i feel the competitors have trumped canon all over the place.

Went to the birdpark and 8 out of 10 people were using Nikon. Buddy I went shooting with uses Nikon and had to put up with sneers and jeers. I love my Canon . Hope the zoo is better next time.

Some 15 years ago, I bought my 1st Canon SLR camera, an EOS 500N film camera. My dad was a Nikon FM but at that time, the EOS 500N was on offer at Safe Superstore Bishan. Then two years ago, I was introduced to the EOS 350D by my boss and I started to enjoy digital photography with an SLR camera. I deceided to get the EOS 350D as I already have a Canon and can share the lenses. Two weeks ago, I bought the EOS 50D for the same reason.

I think Canon gets it right most of the time and if one isn't too nitty picky about camera functions, one can work around the limitations.

Canon always give me the feeling of number 1. So, that's most probably why i chose to enter the world of canon. Nikon comes a close second though.

Wasn't into photography till a friend lent me his Canon 300D for the day and I was hooked. Bought the 300D a week later in 2004 and used it till 4 mths ago where I made the leap to a 40D. There is no other option for me. :)

My first SLR was a Nikon FM (still have it). Use to help out in wedding shoots and the Canons has very quiet belt driven motor drives. So changed to Canon film EOS 100 (still have it). For portability, I also use the very first APS format IXUS (still have it). Naturally upgraded to the digital IXUS when it was first launched (you guessed it - still have it). Now using the EOS40D supplemented by my wife's IXUS 850IS.

I think both Canon and Nikon are strong brands and have their followers. It is just a matter of using using your skills with the equipment you have. The EOS 40D and the lens systems is far, far, far more better than the Pentax Spotmatic of the 70's which was my dream camera then :-).

the camps are split evenly down the middle.
half my friends use nikon, the other half use canon.
i feel that canon is much more user friendly and easier to pick up. the controls are more intuitive and the colour reproduction seems better, comparing the 450D and D60? i think. anyway, nikon's equivalent.
since i have a friend who i hang out with more often, getting a canon means we can share lens. haha.
one gripe tho, the 450D's plastic shutter sound really really gets to me when i'm out shooting with my nikon friends. haha.
oh wells.
