What lenses you own?

Actually I would think that the FA31 is the better walk-around prime.

You mean optically?

Or focal length-wise?

It can't do macros though, and for me, that's what cliches it for the DA35.

Difference in minimum focusing distance of the FA 31mm (0.3m) and the DA 35mm (0.139m) is... a mere 6.3 inches. The FA 31mm may not be a 1:1 macro lens but it can do pretty decent close-ups plus it's glass aspherical front element does deliver that special optical performance. With the DA 35mm, I'm not sure a lot of people even shoot at 1:1 magnification as the working distance to the subject is a very close 5.4 inches.

Anyway no right or wrong regarding lens use or choice. Any lens is better than no lens. Not wide enough... shoot a few shots and stitch in Photoshop... need more magnification... cheat by cropping :)

EOL should not be use here. End of Life mean unusable or un-repairable items.
EOP (End of Production) is the right term to use.
I thought EOL means End of Line which also means end of production. Talking abt EOL, the MIJ FA Limiteds are EOL. New batches are MIV.

I was thinking focal length wise but actually, upon deeper consideration, both. Lol. The DA35 is a dedicated product shot lens for me.

Wow, didn't know the 31 can focus so close. I do use the DA35 at almost touching-the-subject distance at times (with the hood in). So the macro function is useful for me.

Haha! It's a rather pricey product-shoot only lens. :P

I'd also add that the FA35 is also 0.3m min focusing distance :)
All the Pentax 30+mm are good, really boils down to preference.

Actually DA35 isn't a great lens for product shots, probably because its minimum focal distance is too close, might have some perspective distortion on the product photos if you are shooting at very close distance. If it's more than 30cm, then FA35 or 31 can get the job done too :)

The best lens for product photos is 50mm in my experience, no matter it's on dSLR or on film camera.

This I can vouch... the 50mm macro is the money lens when shooting product/food/still life images. That's why I have 2 of them. ;)

Even my Pentax FA 28mm f/2.8 and the FA 24mm f/2 can crank down to 0.3m...
But the perspective distortion is noticeable.

Because it is rather pricey, I do not want to stress it as a walk-around. <;

We're talking about the DA35 here, which is expensive yes.

But eh, you prefer the FA31 as the walkabout, which is even more costly. So you will stress it even less? :P

Huh ?????????.... then why spend $1.2K if you're not prepared to put it through it's paces. My take is the more expensive the lens, the more it has to be "stressed tested" to justify the initial expense.

Actually I am refering to the DA35. I think I did not phrase it correctly. What I mean is I have other lenses to use for walk-arounds so don't have to stress every task on the DA35 despite it being a very versatile lens.

Yeah, cannot play favourites with your lenses... like kids, you got to spend quality time with every one of them. :bsmilie:

Hi,

I am a Sony A700 user.

Lens:
Sony DT18-250
Sigma 170-500.
Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (Future purchase)

I got my Sigma 2nd hand for like $520. Wanted to see how useful this range of zoom would be for me... Loved it. So now looking to upgrade to a more newer lens like maybe Sigma 150-500 or the Tamron 200-500. DOnt know which.
