What Lens for Beginner?

glad that mpenza still very satisfied with his 17-85

Seriously, avoid the 28-105. You do not need that length.

The kit lens, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 (see if they can change it to the USM ones) or the 17-85 IS USM f/4-5.6 is very much sufficient for your needs. The 17-85 would be your all-purpose lens. It's a great walkabout lens at the cost of image quality.

18-55mm USM is not available locally; it is only available in Japan.

if you can spare the cash, go for the 28-135. I assure you, you won't regret it. it has a bigger filter diameter (translates to better IQ), better optical quality (again, better IQ) and a very solid build.
...

I don't understand how a bigger filter diameter translates to a better IQ. Perhaps you'd care to elaborate, because a certain 50mm f/1.4 I used had a 58mm filter thread, but it owns the heck out of a Tamron 17-50mm.

That said, I'm surprised at how few recommendations there are for the Tamron 17-50mm lens. It's a great lens to begin with (especially with the constant f/2.8 to work with). You might have to push your budget by another $90 if you wanna get a warrantied set. Do check focusing accuracy before purchasing.

I got mine locally with local warrenty. (:
See if the shop offers it. If not, stick to the DC motor ones.

hmm? i was thinking if after getting kit lens, i'll get the 28-105. which is good for shooting events too. i think.

FF body, FF means?

IMO, the 28-105 on the 1.6x will cause you lots of problems.
You will not be able to reach the 17mm end (This is because you are not using a FF body. NOTE THIS.) or you end up insufficient reach on the tele end.

Try various combinations of lenses before deciding them. I assume you haven't tried the 28-105mm lens yet? Try completing your focal range. If you are getting the 17-85, do consider the tele end. The 70-200mm (regardless of IS or aperture) will complete your focal range which has a simliar setup of my equipment.

There is no use to re-overlap your focal range, in your example, 17-85 coupled with a 28-105.

If, for some reason, you find the 17mm end not enough, consider the 10-22mm.

NOTE: Lenses considered are meant that you stick to a 1.6x body for some time. I am going to assume you are not going to a FF body. (In like 1 week?) If you intend to go FF, go for the 5D and the 28-105mm by all means.

I don't understand how a bigger filter diameter translates to a better IQ.

I wonder if the 70-200L f/4 L is lousy because of its smaller 67mm thread. :/

Get it?

No.. the smaller 67mm thread is due to its f/4. See the f/2.8 one versus f/4 one.

Few questions, i think i'll be sticking to 400D for quite sometime, its FLM is 1.6x right?
so if i get 50mm it will be around 75mm ?
i will be getting 50mm/f1.8, dunno which other lens to get, reccomendations? around $500 mayb. dont know if i should still get kit lens. is there a lens that is 17-85mm ?

A few more to ask!! sorry!
Is it this one that you people are talking about EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM? (around how much)
and i saw this 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC MACRO (Canon) ( around how much ) [ and MACRO got difference one right? compared to the normal 18-50mm ]
Also the 3rd party lens that you people suggested is which model, if can give me exact name of it so easier for me to search, thanks!

Lastly, I am getting 50mm f1.8. so hope to hear more advice from you guys so that i can reconsider on getting which lens

*** I've understand about FF and stuffs already, thanks guys!

for 50mm lens, the perspective would be 80mm. Firstly, you must consider wad u want to shoot, then decide on which lens to buy. Then decide you want canon or third party. Nxt would be your budget. =)

For prices, u can look through the Canon lens price thread. For 2nd hand, u can check through the Clubsnap BnS section.

EF-S 17-85mm is a good lens for hundreds of bucks. =)

Btw, Canon has 18-55mm lens, but no 18-50mm lens.
There are 50mm f/1.8, f/1.4, and f/1.2L lens. There are 50mm macro lens as well.

18-50 f/2.8 should be from Sigma not Canon if i m not wrong

but the 28-105 isn't a shabby option either, it makes a very good affordable walkaround especially if you're on a budget. my school has 3 copies of this lens, used extensively for event coverage.. Do get the f/3.5-4.5 version which is the better variant.

IMO, the 2 'saving grace' about the 28-135 is probably the wide focal length it covers and IS. even then, IS is not everything, it adds extra weight to the lens, something you dont want if you want to travel light.

next, bigger filter diameter != better IQ, it meant only more glass is needed.
under normal shooting conditions, the 24-85 (with a 67mm filter diameter) is able to produce corners that are much sharper than the 28-135.

24-85mm can serve well as portrait lens as well. I seen photos taken by this lens. =)

hmm, will be getting my prime lens tmr i think. as 400D got a FLM of 1.6x if i get 24mm onwards, it's abit hard to shoot indoor, like family gathering etc. so get a kit lens(18-55) + prime lens(50mmf1.8) first, then wait till i'm more familiar with those two, then probably get another one with further range ? what do you guys think?

makes a lot of sense to me. have fun shooting!

sometimes u can zoom with your feet before you get the longer range lens. have fun shooting. =)

If you get a good copy of this lens (I'm assuming you probably did), it is actually very sharp wide open at the 85mm end.

Sounds good to me.

Work these two lenses until you are very sure of what your needs are, and most importantly have fun.

Nope, i din use it. I seen the photos taken by this lens. Alot of portraits taken by this lens. That's y i am satisfied with this lens.
