Seriously, avoid the 28-105. You do not need that length.
The kit lens, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 (see if they can change it to the USM ones) or the 17-85 IS USM f/4-5.6 is very much sufficient for your needs. The 17-85 would be your all-purpose lens. It's a great walkabout lens at the cost of image quality.
if you can spare the cash, go for the 28-135. I assure you, you won't regret it. it has a bigger filter diameter (translates to better IQ), better optical quality (again, better IQ) and a very solid build.
...
18-55mm USM is not available locally; it is only available in Japan.
hmm? i was thinking if after getting kit lens, i'll get the 28-105. which is good for shooting events too. i think.
FF body, FF means?
I don't understand how a bigger filter diameter translates to a better IQ.
I wonder if the 70-200L f/4 L is lousy because of its smaller 67mm thread. :/
Get it?
Few questions, i think i'll be sticking to 400D for quite sometime, its FLM is 1.6x right?
so if i get 50mm it will be around 75mm ?
i will be getting 50mm/f1.8, dunno which other lens to get, reccomendations? around $500 mayb. dont know if i should still get kit lens. is there a lens that is 17-85mm ?
A few more to ask!! sorry!
Is it this one that you people are talking about EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM? (around how much)
and i saw this 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC MACRO (Canon) ( around how much ) [ and MACRO got difference one right? compared to the normal 18-50mm ]
Also the 3rd party lens that you people suggested is which model, if can give me exact name of it so easier for me to search, thanks!
Lastly, I am getting 50mm f1.8. so hope to hear more advice from you guys so that i can reconsider on getting which lens
*** I've understand about FF and stuffs already, thanks guys!

but the 28-105 isn't a shabby option either, it makes a very good affordable walkaround especially if you're on a budget. my school has 3 copies of this lens, used extensively for event coverage.. Do get the f/3.5-4.5 version which is the better variant.
18-50 f/2.8 should be from Sigma not Canon if i m not wrong![]()
IMO, the 2 'saving grace' about the 28-135 is probably the wide focal length it covers and IS. even then, IS is not everything, it adds extra weight to the lens, something you dont want if you want to travel light.
next, bigger filter diameter != better IQ, it meant only more glass is needed.
under normal shooting conditions, the 24-85 (with a 67mm filter diameter) is able to produce corners that are much sharper than the 28-135.
makes a lot of sense to me. have fun shooting!hmm, will be getting my prime lens tmr i think. as 400D got a FLM of 1.6x if i get 24mm onwards, it's abit hard to shoot indoor, like family gathering etc. so get a kit lens(18-55) + prime lens(50mmf1.8) first, then wait till i'm more familiar with those two, then probably get another one with further range ? what do you guys think?

24-85mm can serve well as portrait lens as well. I seen photos taken by this lens. =)

If you get a good copy of this lens (I'm assuming you probably did), it is actually very sharp wide open at the 85mm end.
