What it takes to ask the OP to unlock a thread?

to up the thread? :dunno: just guessing.

Anyway, I used to have quite a few of those pics when I had my first P&S. It looked kinda cool to me but was quickly gunned down as crapped. So what makes an abstract good and what makes it crap? :dunno:

As you all know, I don't like abstracts. So I don't but if and when I see something that is really good, I will give it due recognition.

What makes an abstract good or bad, i have no idea, I don't appreciate abstract, dont understand it, that's while I don't like it. therefore, for everyone that told you your abstract is crap, I am sure there are equal number of them out there who thinks it's good.

the problem here on CS is, there are a group of more influencial individuals. If you see them praise a photograph, other who thinks otherwise will not date to oppsoe them. Likewise if they slam someone, doubt anyone will stand up and said they are wrong.

this i got to agree to some extend. unless you can find an equal amount of ppl willing to challenge the opposite camp.

there usually is, but because the dai lo all say one thing, they are too timid to take teh opposite stand, but that dows not mean they do not exist.

The discussion is really not about Ms. Lai, isn't it?

i thot the discussion was about ms lai's photography? and how she was selected as one of the 100 most promising youth? :dunno:

Proof read! Well then, good on you for your own ideas. I did notice the way you handled the situation.

Face it, You can't take feedback.

Is there really a need to start up another thread to go after somebody who is merely expressing his views? You are after all a 'champion' on the freedom of speech.

Note the quotes. There's something called private messaging.

However, to press it another way.

If you can't handle the stuff the people dish out at you like the way you dish out to other people (Like ms lai), you need a major rethink over whether you follow the way you act.

And honestly, if you really believed what you say is right, there's no need to explain yourself , your thinking or your character.

My spelling sucks. Most people know that.

Free speech. I can say what I want to. This thread was started to address a situation where the OP re-openned a thread in order for someone to post a slam, and then, closing it immediately.

If they were merely expressing their views, leave the thread open so opposing view points can also be heard.

I do not explain myself, my thinking nor my character, I just express my observation and opinions. If I disagree, I raise my objections and view points. Is that wrong? According to you, it is.

Private messaging, what does it achieve? Is there a rule on this forum prohibiting me from posting what I posted?

Btw, read and fully undrstand the situation before you comment, and understand what you are saying before you say it.

Oh, no spell check here, please forgive my typos.

Well, did he exactly slam you? Of course if you take it personally that is. I don't see any direct character assasination over there. Overall, he's just offering an analogy of pushing somebody's work down when what he felt was uncalled for.

Oh but of course if you decide to take that thread personally as a slam, then this thread could be intepreted as a 'slam' back for somebody expressing his or her own views, with the pretext of your question above.

Or if you really need to degorate somebody, there's always private messaging. At least it's kept between you two and not washing any dirty linen in public.

Calling somebody who suck or is misguided, is in anyone's vocab, a direct attack on one's persona. And I do believe it is in the interest of any moderator or whatever to censor or prevent any language that would result in any form of opinions that would result in slander of another person that is uncalled for.

Yeah, you could express your own view points and all that stuff you proclaim that by right you so happily eschew about. But when it comes to a piece of a verbally directed assault on someone's character when it is uncalled for (as you happily did with ms lai, student and stereobox), that's definately taboo.

If you want to ask the OP or whatever about that question fine by this, but there's no need to use that as an excuse to call stereobox or anybody totally misguided. Even if it was OT

If you want to contend this, look under the example of defamation law suits and see if you want to justify disguising your so called 'direct' commentry under freedom of speech.

(And aren't you exactly explaining yourself why you're acting like this?)

Free speech is not only what you can say, but what others can say too. If you happily 'slam 'them back with hasty phrases, then you're basically shooting yourself in your own foot. At least give them the benefit of the doubt.

Oh, and before you could go about me 'slamming' you, I'm already being pretty polite.
Did I say you 'suck', or totally irrevelantly 'stupid'?Or you're 'misguided'?

You want to be blunt, there are other ways to express that without putting people down.

What is degorate? And what's intepreted?

you could express your own view points and all that stuff you so happily eschew about.
And how does eschew come in here??
Proof read?? :dunno: :dunno:

1 As DP himself mentioned, CS does not have a system to do proof reading to ensure good English. As a result, errors in spellings and grammars, syntax etc are common.

2 While having good English is undoubtedly desirable, I believe in a forum like this where people come from different cultural upbringing, education, language etc, the more important thing is to communicate.

So does it matter if the spelling is wrong? Is it difficult to understand that "degorate" is actually "derogate", and "intepreted" is "interpreted".

My understanding is that the word "eschew" meant "shun" avoid" "keep away". Is this really inappropriate?

3 And what is the purpose of that link www.quantz.com/fanart/bigwords.jpg? That people have used bombastic words? Where are these bombastic words?

Whoops..I guess I gotta catch up on my spelling myself.
Dang I'm spoiled on ms word spelling checks too often lately..

One of those situations where I happily stepped on my foot! lol.

You don't get my point, don't you? I was highlighting the fact that sometimes people just don't practice what they preach. Understand?? Let me know if you don't, I can always try phrasing it in simpler terms for you.

I really do not understand.

Your words are too sophisticated and too highly unintelligible to lesser folks like me. So much so that I cannot for the life of me, understand your what you were trying to say.

You know, coming from such an advanced nation like Australia with great superior white minds and use of the English language surely gives you an edge in the usage of English over Chinkis like me. I acknowledge that.

While you are at it, and since you are so kind to rephrase it in simpler (and I hope simple terms), please make it also very clear in exact nonambiguous terms in what manner wisp did not practice what he preached.

And if I may please beg you to indulge and educate me, how did you, by using such terms and comments in the manner you did in post #28 (which referred to wisp's post #27) indicate that wisp did not practice what he preached?

Hi student,

Hello from down under.

I am aware that you are not a cultural biased person.

With that in mind, I have a shrimp ready for you to put on the barbie

Would be honored to share a beer with you if you visit.

PM me if you ever decide to.

Cheers :)

G'day!

Does your invitation extend to the fellow Australians?

If I were you I wouldn't waste a shrimp or a good beer with anyone else. :bsmilie:

A happy Anzac holiday to you mate!

Thank you Pablo.

Your thoughts are surely appreciated. I understand your sentiments and concern.

I had thought hard before I penned that post. I did not say that GDSNP was Australian. Just that at the present moment, he penned from Australia. I am fully aware that many people from Australia are not Australians. I have relatives residing in Australia and studying in Australia. But they are not Australians.

I hereby apologise unreservedly to all Australians if my comments were seen as offensive to them. It is not my intention to cast apersions on Australians, most of whom are wonderful people.

If I were Pablo, I would not waste my shrimp and beer with any fellow Australian who would not share his shrimp with non-Australian.

If I were Pablo, I would be ashamed to call such as fellow Australians.

So one can open his thread for comments and close it. Opens it again for another comments he agrees and closes it. I assume they are sitting side by side discussing about it, or PM, or SMS, etc.

So we can actually use this method of keeping "agreeable comments" in the threads for long long time in cyberspace.

Cool! Must try some time.

The admins will probably make a formal announcement in the feedback section about this - as of yesterday evening, closing/re-openning of a discussion thread in all public sub-forums except Buy & Sell by the thread starter has been disabled.

So only a moderator or administrator can close/re-open a thread going forward.
