What Camera would typical Amateur Photographers upgrade to for next level ??

but does it make a difference if you shoot RAW or JPEG in terms of ISO?

hmm, it does make a difference in other sense. If you shoot RAW, it stores all the original information. So if you view it directly out of the cam or from your laptop, the noise is very visible and you have to manually correct it off to get a clean image.

For JPEG, the 5D3 has a very much improved noise reduction system and it gives you a very clean image off cam. You lose the ability to edit in RAW, but for busy shooters (news reporters) or for persons who needs to quickly chrun out their images to show on projectors (wedding dinners) or publish it, the clean JPEG image comes very handy.

I shoot RAW only on 5D2 - but I shoot RAW+JPEG on 5D3, because it provides me the best of both world.

alot. Afterall, JPEG is post processed =/
Please don't confuse newbies. The difference is the amount of details lost in JPG compression. ISO performance is purely on the sensor, nothing else.

ok, get it. To get better iso, FF is e way to go .... hmm

EOS 7D suits you. A nice weighted body with high resolving power. :)
Will suit the 15-85mm lens very well.

Don't you think you are the one confusing the newbies with such technicality? lol.

Newbies don't care about the process. Newbies care about the result. And the result from JPEG is that it's cleaner than RAW from the camera. Not everyone is into technicality, and you shouldn't assume so.

wow if newbies don't care about the technicality then they gottsta be in the wrong hobby.

don't you need to know how your gear works to produce results?

I have worked with several Canon dSLRs and the 7D is what I'd recommend.

As for the lens, you have a wide selection. You can stick to your EF-S lens, you can go for the various f/4 zoom lenses if you're on a budget. f/2.8 lens if you got the cash. Or primes if you know exactly what you want.

And oh yes, I just completed an assignment with the 5D Mk II. Excellent camera. But after getting spoilt silly by the Mk III auto focus ability, the Mk II lost much of its luster.

Especially when it failed me at some crucial moments when both me and my subjects were in constant and unpredictable movement. I'm certain the Mk III would have fared better.

My point is, if you want a full frame camera, save up the cash for the 5D Mk III. It's worth it.

Hi! sorry for imposing on this thread but i thought it'll be a suitable place to post my questions since everyone's here!

I'm also a relatively amateur photographer, owner of canon 600D for almost a year, kits lens and 50mm f/1.8. I am considering upgrading to another DSLR and lens as well but i don't really know which model is a suitable one. i would prefer one with smaller crop factor. i was considering 5dm2 but im afraid its a pretty big jump for me. hope to hear all of your opinions and recommendations!! :)

Hi Melissa,

Like what other bro's been asking me ... maybe I should share with you.

- What will be your speciality? (Street, Portrait, landscape, wildlife etc)
- Budget (Not an issue because everyone seems to be getting 5Dmiii or used mii ... lolx)
- Your dissatisfaction so far with your camera. (BTW, your 600D is way ahead of my 450D - 18MP, Video function, ISO 12.8K)

If your idea is sway towards mii because of the comments you've read over in CS, I suggest think twice.
Going for Mii is a whole lot different game. (That is why I am starting this thread, maybe some fellow can knock sense to my head lolx)

- FF (Fast and furious ... lolx .. )
- A new set of lens (EF or primes)
- A lot heavier (are you used to the weight?)
- Usage frequency
- changing of SD to CF cards (Not an issue but for me, it is as I have 3 x 8G Sd card so I need to buy a SD-to-CF adapter, nor do I wana waste it on a spare camera body)

For my case I shoot portraits, not much issue but when I need to go natural light or go to a room, even using 50mm F1.8 might be insufficient at times.
Using flash is okay at times but not always all the time. Thus ISO is an issue to me even if I purchase 50mm F1.2. Can't means can't.
I am also tied down by budget concern (read me carefully, not constraint but concern ....I can way afford it but wait ...),
it seems mad to slash out 7-8K (possible) at this point for 5Dmiii. (Body, Grip, Lenses, filters, etc).

I am considering grey set 5Dmii thou and get a $$2.5k odd lens. I would probably have blown 5k on it as well.

After reading goodwill advices from fellow bros and thinking much last night, I feel maybe 7D is more than enough.
- Good AF system (enough for me)
- No changes in the lens.
- ISO looks okay.

Of course getting miii is the best option. That is only possible if I use it more.
Looking at long term, after 2 years down the road, upgrade to FF might not be a bad thing after all!
By then, I can use 7D as a back up, retire the 450D and get the FF monster.

Think about what you seek. Now I might wait for the 7D mii (rumours) around Aug and decide!

Good luck and best wishes!! :)

Hi there, I have a somewhat similar issue to "WhaleGaga" as I too is a amateur photographer. I shot mainly, landscape, food and when i am travelling some street photography. I currently hold a Sony a55 SLt and I have used it for a year plus. It is not a bad camera thus i planning to keep it as it has EVF. Planning on changing to Canon due to it being able to handle better noise probs, ergonomics wise is good too and i wanted to have a camera that has OVF. I haved tried out the Canon 7D and 5D2/5D3. One is crop sensor while the other is FF. The main question is, should stick to the crop sensor route upgrade or upgrade to FF?:)

Crop and FF can do the job for the things you want to shoot :)

It largely depend on your preference and pocket, really - because you are starting out Canon from scratch.

I see. I am not really on a tight budget. As I would not be upgrading yet. Just wanted some feedback. I have in mine 7D and 5d2/d3. Just not sure who to pick. I planning to wait for 7d2 if there is.?😁

Hi Nicpng,

Glad we can talk about such issues.
The head can rule the heart thou mostly it's the other way round when it comes to posioning. Lolx
The heart will 'naturally' give way to head when u fall in love with the equipments. Big monsters we'll talking about.

You're doing lots of landscape, street etc. Sometimes it will be crazy to mount a flash and expect to blast it all over, especially when the light is low.
This I think where most bros will propose, a 5Dmiii.

I am stuck on it too. Who don't want the best? You have tested the Cams ... what's your take on it?

Av Bro is right, crop or full, Canon cameras does their job well and seldom failed us.
