What Camera would typical Amateur Photographers upgrade to for next level ??

If your budget permit, I would suggest you go for 5DII with the 24-105mm f4, 24-105 on a FF is pretty close to the EF15-85 range on your crop body.

I had been using 5DII for awhile up till upgrading to Mark III recently and I used it mostly for holiday pictures. I find the image quality for 5DII to be exceptional even at high ISO of 6400, it is rather hard in most situation to shoot with tripod and flash when travelling, I find the 5DII high ISO capability to be a very handy. I recalled I am able to shot a night scene past sunset handheld and the picture still turn out to be like one shot during sun set and the image is very clean even I blow it up on my 23" display. However, I find the 9 points AF and the metering system to be a little dated, I have a tendency to have to switch to manual mode to compensate for the exposure setting in many occasions, while my wife 7D is getting the exposure spot on. MKIII now come with a very sophisticated AF system and I think the metering is being updated as well.

The 24-105mm really shine with 5D2 as has the right wide angle to adequate telephoto coverage on a full frame body and the IQ is really sharp around the corners and edges. F4 with IS is really important for me as it allow me to take at very low lighting situation handheld such as inside lowly lighted indoor such as churches and museums as well as night scene.

Thanks for the advice ... I do feel working on the camera without much help as in flash etc - will help the photographer to capture details much faster then setting this or that up.
By now, My mind is more or less filter towards 5Dmii ... I need time to think about it still as there are other factors to consider.

- 450D as back up or sell it?
- What to do with the EF-S lens?

typical hobbyist ... lolx

correct use of flash makes any indoor/outdoor picture looks nicer ^^

Yes man, especially if mixed with some ambient lighting... It sure make a whole lot of different.

But FF cameras has the best high ISO control so far which allows the use of much more ambient lighting.

especially with the 5D3's ISO control, I've seen pictures of night stage performance taken at ISO25600, the ambient light is captured very nicely and the picture is clean with great details.

Flash unit provides more illumination if used properly.

Bounced flash is especially important for indoor portrait.

LOL. try flashing in one of those.

Typical Amateur will upgrade to anything he/she is willingly to spend or feels like owning it.
So it ranges from Entry with kit to Everything in the line up. (Maybe a few other brands too).

Well ... nobody will doubt 5DM3 .... problem is ... people like me or us probably won't be able to afford it at all .... some of us might just be students, blue/white collar working fellows with budget constraint.

For me as mentioned, no way can I pay for 5DM3 at this moment .... if add in a decent EF lens .. I'll end up blowing in a cool 6~7k.

Here's one school of thought.
Just get the best you can afford. If your pictures turn out like $hit, you can't blame the tools but your lack of skills.
If you still insist on blaming the tools, then blame yourself for lack of $$$ instead to get even more expensive gear. Haha!
;)

Hi! sorry for imposing on this thread but i thought it'll be a suitable place to post my questions since everyone's here!

I'm also a relatively amateur photographer, owner of canon 600D for almost a year, kits lens and 50mm f/1.8. I am considering upgrading to another DSLR and lens as well but i don't really know which model is a suitable one. i would prefer one with smaller crop factor. i was considering 5dm2 but im afraid its a pretty big jump for me. hope to hear all of your opinions and recommendations!! :)

Frankly... nobody is afraid of whether the jump is big or not..but rather whether the pocket is deep enough or not.. lol..
You know going Full frame also means..you cant use your crop lenses right. Then the Full frame will be heavier and more expensive, and lenses are alot bigger as well.

I will cut the chase on the crop sensor and upgrade to a FF if I so choose to upgrade. most of canon crop sensor behaves the same anyway. Btw what is actually limiting U now?

I doubt those Chinese stage "da xi" can use flash lah.. :bsmilie:

Yup, just get what you can afford that fits your need. :) that's always the 2 main factors to your purchase. but of course anyone that has the extra money can buy everything he doesn't need.... :bsmilie:
