What Camera would typical Amateur Photographers upgrade to for next level ??

Ok on the Shutter Speed issue. :)
I'm using 50mm F1.8, EFS 15-85 F3.5-5.6 mostly. Sometimes I want to play with the ISO but up to 800 max before I find the pictures unsable. So a higher ISO will be nice in my opinion, using f1.8 might cause blur or OOF if my hands are shaky.

Chasing after Higher ISO will bring you nowhere....Every newer generation of camera will bring about better/cleaner higher ISO. If you are really dying to upgrade to use higher ISO, go either newer XXXD/XXD (and upgrade every year, pain every year) or FF (do it once...but quite painful).

FF may be able to give you clean images at 6400 while crop may have issues getting it clean at 3200. So it's up to you to define how clean you want the images to be and how much you want to spend on a hobby.

yrh0413,

I might print if there's an oversea trip with wifey.
cannot rule that out, now mostly is all in e web .. digital age so well .....

I prefer a higher ISO as I feel at low light location or where flash is not advisable to use. Aperture work best around F3.5 as compared to F2.5~1.8 if you're a shaky person like me, lolx.
It's the machine that will makes the difference sometimes. Maybe I am just going for the easy way out.

ISO at 1.6k for xD is a total different game as compared to entry level camera like the xxxD series. I don't think it's a fair comparsion.

If you are a "shaky" person, all the more you should use either higher ISO or bigger aperture to get faster shutter speed....7D is also a XD....it's comparable to 550D or 600D if you are referring to sensor... (IIRC many forums say they are the same)

You're so right on the ISO ... aperture if you're bo-bo shooter, you will aim for the nose instead of the eyes lolx. (I shoot portraits monthly btw) ...
that is why I'm considering to upgrade camera. BTW, I'll still be keeping my 450D as a back up. It is a solid bXXXXXd ... : )

IIRC The 550D, 600D, 60D and 7D all have the same 1.6x APS-C sensor.

Photographic is all lighting and shape, if iso 800 is not a option use flash, is flash can not reach like landscape use tripod, if still too dark then wait for the sun light and many other options which other suggested above and if no money then wait again.

Go with what your budget can get you. I almost went straight with 1D and stayed with it. 1D2->1D3->1D4 and lenses, 200F2, 85F1.2, 14F2.8 and etc.

You may want to take a look at bro Anson's 450D and his 18-200 (http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/canon/481860-canon-18-200mm-f3-5-5-6-a.html) Shooting portraits and stuffs. Perhaps what you need is not a new body, but rather an external flash (with HSS) and/or a faster prime. (perhaps also a better understanding of light)

Outdoor + low light + portrait..Most of the time, I see people using flash than not..

Dodgethis,

Correct me on that .. you're mean to say that APS-C sensors are the same, ISO will more or less be the same, is that what you mean?
Sorry, technically I'm not so well versed on Cams.

hmm if so that is it..... the final conclusion is either keep my current set or get 5D mii/ miii? No point getting same APS-C sensor out of xxD or 7D.

You can wait for 650D if you want. Coming soon.

I have a 450D (as my spare body) as well, and I would suggest that you upgrade it. Because the maximum screen brightness is way too low lol. Can't see anything under the sun compared to 7D or 550D zzzz.

I read the first post, but it didn't state what you are shooting primary. What are you shooting?

I don't have problems with using lighting set up ... :).

I shoot outdoor more than indoors. And that's where my problem comes in.
I am thinking if I were to go indoor or natural-light etc ...the current camera might be restricted to certain extent. The 50mm f1.8 isn't sufficient enough based on it alone.
And shaky issue without tripod will cause more trouble and OOF. Sorry didn't declare clearly on that.

Right now I shoot slowly. For sure, cannot be an event guy with my pace ... lolx

Mainly portrait, yup feel limited to certain sense. But it's a poisoned hobby :( you'll never say 5D miii is good when mvi comes out ....

If your budget permit, I would suggest you go for 5DII with the 24-105mm f4, 24-105 on a FF is pretty close to the EF15-85 range on your crop body.

I had been using 5DII for awhile up till upgrading to Mark III recently and I used it mostly for holiday pictures. I find the image quality for 5DII to be exceptional even at high ISO of 6400, it is rather hard in most situation to shoot with tripod and flash when travelling, I find the 5DII high ISO capability to be a very handy. I recalled I am able to shot a night scene past sunset handheld and the picture still turn out to be like one shot during sun set and the image is very clean even I blow it up on my 23" display. However, I find the 9 points AF and the metering system to be a little dated, I have a tendency to have to switch to manual mode to compensate for the exposure setting in many occasions, while my wife 7D is getting the exposure spot on. MKIII now come with a very sophisticated AF system and I think the metering is being updated as well.

The 24-105mm really shine with 5D2 as has the right wide angle to adequate telephoto coverage on a full frame body and the IQ is really sharp around the corners and edges. F4 with IS is really important for me as it allow me to take at very low lighting situation handheld such as inside lowly lighted indoor such as churches and museums as well as night scene.

Hi everyone,

....
Recently, I’ve decide to look further to ‘upgrade’ to a better equipped Camera. Not to say 450 doesn’t work well now, I am just exploring further options to deal with different scenario (shoots)
- Natural Light
- Better control over AF selections
etc

I’ve browse over several Cameras for upgrade consideration.

- EOS 50D/ 60D – I like 50D for it’s body build but to upgrade from 12MP to 15MP doesn’t make sense. It's also not a young Camera.
60D got 18MP but I don’t need the video function at all and I think the flip-out looks plastic lolx.
- EOS 7D – Considering but heard lots of negative feedbacks on it’s ‘softness’ on the quality. Anyone can clarify? Furthermore, there’s rumor of 7D Mii coming out.
- EOS 5DC / Mii – Like to have Mii but it also means FF and I have to get compatible Lenses as well. Currently I shoot mostly with EF-S15-85. It serves me well but won’t be able to use it on FF bodies. 5DC is also about approx 7-8 years ago Technology. Does it make sense owning it?
* I’ve left out Miii because of Budget and also I won’t be doing the monster a service since I only shoot at most once a month.

I would like to seek opinions from fellow amateur Photographers as well on what is your pick and consideration? Or simply just stick to what I have?? Hahaha ... I’m considering that as well.

Will love to hear from fellow pals on it.

I think I get where you were coming from. But for indoor, flash (be it bounce or reflect) it's the way to go if high iso is limited.

sigh ... that is what I'm afraid of ... flash indoor.

Hi gaga,
Shot with 7d and 5d2 side by side and 7d autofocus is way faster than the 5d. IQ for both are the best in their class. Overall 7d is the best canon crop cam now, IMO, with good video & photo capabilities. Only downside is the iso in low light loses out to 5d2, though the focussing is faster. Hope that helps & happy donating $$$ to canon!

How about wait awhile for the new 650D? Should have better ISO performance and use LR to do NR... LR noise reduction is quite good.

hmm like that wait awhile 700D also coming out.
