Went Wandering - From Tokyo to Hakata

With the 28 2.8, one of the courses from the kaiseki dinner
Yeah it was *that* type of meal
I was full at the end of it though, much to my surprise

Braised octopus, hand burner-grilled fish and raw fish - to showcase three methods of cooking I presume
One could almost remark in Cantonese that it's one piece of fish too many
Tasting it however, disappointingly one piece of fish too little

Rode the escalator twice to get this
On the way down to the train platform
It was a quiet day
I wonder how many shots I've missed because I've been too self-conscious!

and she's buying by Zichar, on Flickr

Half expected the whole thing to just turn into a robot and walk off the tracks...
Making animatronic sounds in my head, parts folding
Limbs unfolding, an elbow there, shaking out the knee, head sprouting
The gleam, must have been an amazing detailer they've got
Shine, fill and buff out the battle scars
Recalling the scene, I was probably gushing uncontrollably like a five-year-old
A bullet train Wow

Canal City mall in Hakata
Oddly I was in Canal City, Kitakyushu a few years back, the malls seem so alike
Actually guessed the name before my friend confirmed it

Sometimes I wonder
How inconsiderate building architects are
Not to take into account how art installations
Will be accessible for interested photographers
I gave my most forceful and irritated Tsk
Audible enough to place a deepset frown on passerby foreheads
As I perched precariously
Hung half body over the glass railings
All because this reminded me so much of the Matrix
Oh that scene with the Creator

Underground carpark architects must all study at the same
School of Convoluted Design
Only exit off on a lonely side street, routine pre-established
Telepathy handshake
Wife walks into drug store, browses through green tea selection
Weighing the heft in my hand
Pick a lens, pick a corner

The driver looked at me funny as I stood aside
If I had dressed nicely, top it off with a stiff bow
Waiting for him to pass me by
Tagged a hospitality greeter at Macy’s or fancy Sogo

Risky my inner voice declares sotto voce
My act of practised nonchalance almost as good
As a white rook amidst red checkers
Trying to shoot indoors, a buffet by itself
Dinner crowd, crowded supa
Self-restraint pencilled in Private Property
Have always loved, blameth my dastardly upbringing
Patrolling vigilant; sticker upon sticker
Meal made sweeter
Those tantalising end-of-day deals

the price of fish oy vey by Zichar, on Flickr

When it’s hot, you scream
And when it’s cold, you do the same
Bundled up into the car and travel through miles of countryside
Rivers in conrete encasements, reeds tickling the sky
The tip whizzes in, corner of the eye style
From a sixty year old grandmother with a sweet tooth
Up upon a home visit but of course

Definitely untraditional, she wrinkled up her nose
Scrunched up her face
As the matronly cashier greetd you not with a warm welcome
But a decidedly chilly (or frosty) how many flavours do you want
I paused, that look, no way
Were we to walk out again, bad service redux
The drive, the journey, the rear-aching wait
But she shrugged and ordered
We rejoiced, rubbing hands in glee and cold

>>

It wasn’t ready when we first dropped by, flavours still churning in the machine
So we rendezvous-ed at the lunch place first
Delectably fresh uni served on a bed of rice
The sides, somehow coming across as a tourist trap
Tempura, pickles, miso jiru, a less than stellar performance
But the uni, shovelled in atop I’m certain, the rice buried alive

5-shot pano, 28 2.8AIS

On a cold gloomy morning
For when the clouds threatened to unfurl their arms
Cradling grey grey puddles of water

After days of bugging my friend to bring us to something distinctly local
Not the city, somewhere old, where people practised their crafts
On our last day, he asked his colleagues and one ventured ... Tsuyazaki Sengen?
Exactly what we wanted, if only we found out about it earlier instead of wandering around the supermarkets!

So where we were; all the drying squid and dried up fish
The fishing boats with coughing old men with a lone cigarette hanging off their drooping lower lip
Skillfully dumping dirty water in even dirtier pails off the sides
We met this old woman wrapping nets over the baskets of bird food
The rest engaged her in conversation, me snapping away at the background
Oh the curse of being *that* oblivious photographer

I couldn't quite imagine, but she's 88 and does this daily!
Posed for photos and talked a bit about what we could use the items for
And pointed us to the nearby wooden building, a co-op for the fishermen and women
Please help buy my stuff (paraphrased), she bowed politely

Trooped in the front door, shelter from the cold strong winds
And asked the counter lady if we could buy dried whatever from the old woman outside
She laughed amusedly as she pointed to the 5 photos above on the wall
Which one? They're all old, the youngest 77, the oldest 88
A tiny whiteboard besides each to denote the products they sell and how many completed
KPIs inescapable even in senescence

This turned out a bit differently than what I expected
It’s the angle of the eyes, gonna chase you out of earth
She was soooooo friendly as some strays are wont to be
Every time I knelt down she would slowly saunter over
Rub her sides on my legs, walking in a criss-cross fashion

Which also meant taking photos of her was an abysmal failure
I think my wife wanted to cat-nap her back ... if only we weren't in Japan
Lounging around the small roads of the quaint old village
She did not give a rat's about laying in the middle of one
Surprisingly drivers just stopped and waited for us to lure her away
... with the promise of pats and strokes mais oui

Persimmons hanging from a bamboo pole
In the driveway of well, someone else's house
The oval Japanese variety is often the astrigent type when raw
They're all tied up in pairs, draped over
I don't know why but my first thoughts were Newton's cradle

Viva la bokeh...
With the 50 1.2

beautiful!

Thanks!

From wandering the old town
Most look like they're uninhabited
Houses mostly though there's a street with shops
Considering house heating isn't as common in Japan
This one's probably super cold in the winter
