use as small an aperture as your flash power allows...this reduces the amount of ambient light from the background, thus reducing the brightness of the background, while the flash provides enough light for your model to be well exposed...if your flash is powerful enough, and if your background isn't too bright, it might even be possible to have a blacked out background...
