err ... the 80-200 focuses slower than a 70-300G ? ... cos i shot sports day for my JC ... with my own equiptment ... and a cheapo 70-300G (cheepo compared to your 80-200/70-200VR) and still managed to get quite a few decent action shots ...
talking about a push pull 80-200 here.

Haha, actually they quoted me $930 with GST. I told them that a friend of mine bought it at $870 in Sept, after consulting his senior sales, he said ok lor. I think I shld have said $860, haiz ... Maybe the next person can try :bsmilie:

That's the thing I don't like about CP, the first price they quote you is always no good, then they bring the price down to make it look like you've gotten a very good deal (ok, some are, but a lot of times you can get the same price or less from other places as well without the show).

Got my 10-20 from TK Foto for $860, quoted on the first quote (ask for more discount, but couldn't get any... :D ).

So my guess is right, I shld have said $860, hiaz ... lost $10 :bsmilie:

Anyway, u might want to update Cactus Jack ... it will help other pple from falling prey to high quotes :)

I'm aware that CP quotes higher prices, so I try to do my homework b4 going down there. No choice leh, I called Alan photo, both branches no stock. MS quoted me $890 after tax. I forgot to check with TK, though.

But, I must say that CP service generally quite good. I found a speck of dust in the lens after I paid for it. I asked whether i can change it, and it happened that it was their last nikon mount. So they called up the Marina branch and helped me arrange for a swap there. Throughout this process, sales people from both branches never showed me an unpleasant face even once. I cannot imagine doing this at some other less pleasant shops ... :)

CP's got great service, no doubt about that. Guess that's the premium you pay.
Ultimately there is a base line to the price the shops can sell at, a $10 variance for big ticket items (lenses and bodies) is fine I guess as long as you're happy with the purchase. :D

Don't get me started on AP... that's one place you really need to know your stuff before approaching them and their customer service is suspect (subjective - depends on who you get). This is the experience I get from the one at SLS.

don't mind me asking how long is tokina warrenty on lens? 1 year? TIA

sigma's known for its QC problems, like with the 70-200. i wonder if theres [lemons] with the 10-20

standard should be 1 year.

12-24 to be is actually a very usable focal length range. On my dslr it becomes a 18-36mm- Great when covering events, esp. crucial parts of events where photographers crowd around the main subject. Get the Nikon. I cant afford it, but am willing to wait till I get sufficient funds for it.

or the 18-35 would be another viable option. sharp and good lens to have.

Considered that, but shoved it aside as i feel it isnt worth the money for such a range for DIGITAL. Just my opinion.

After a year of photography, really fell in love with wide angles......

really like the 18mm of the D70 kit lens.

What's the next upgrade I can get for wide angle? Any wider and bigger apature lens around?

Is the sigma 10-20mm and nikon 12-24mm gd? (but the apature seems small..f4...)

So what did you get at the end of the day?????

Please share with us....

haha, in the end, maybe hes starving for 14mm F2.8

nikkor 12-24

extremely sharp

noticeable distortion on the widest end, esp if you shoot subjects close by.

it is small, light and a great pleasure to use.

Agreed. The distortion by the way is not an issue of the lens; it is the mathematical project of the image causing non-linear distortion on all wide angle lenses, unless you are referring to the higher-order distortion aka moutache distortion.

but alas, its magnificant price tag. i choose tokina.

wide angle lenses dont really need big apatures. at 12mm i can handhold 1/5s and still get sharp pics. if really no choice juz bump ur iso to 400 or 640;)

i went to sitex yesterday and shot the whole thing with my tokina

iso400 + sb600 = 1/30@f/4

Not really true. The reasons for open wide aperture are also to get faster shutter speed say for sports or to allow more ambient light in. For some situations like events where you cannot/will not use flash (like church wedding), you would need to open wide.

but the effects of a smaller max apature(f/4 in this case) has less effect on wide angle lenses than compared to mid range and tele as camera shake is not exaggerated much so fast shutters r not required(to prevent blur from hand shake that is) fast shutters r still needed to freeze the action
