Too much to ask for?

Just a question to ask those who buy and sell lens in Clubsnap.

Lets say you are buying a lens from a seller. Is it ok to ask the seller to send it for cleaning? (They have specified that there is dust in lens)

From what I understand that sellers sell at "at it is" conditions, but in selling anything, I believe it would be good that sellers sell their lens in an optically clean condition.

Any views from the pros out there?

a) there is no such thing, IMO, as a 'clean' lens. even new lens in box in the shop has dust.

b) as long as the dust dun affect images, leave it. opening up the lens for cleaning by the service centres has been known to screw up ur lens....

c) if u dun like the idea of 'dusty' lens, then dun buy. its ur $. then again, see #1.

d) end of it all - caveat emptor.

I think the seller don't mind sending the lens for cleaning, provided the buyer confirm on buying the lens plus payment for the lens cleaning fees.

Otherwise, the seller probably prefer to sell to other buyers intead, less hassle.

I selling a lens at $500.00, go a few interested buyer, one came and view the lens, told me the lens has dirt inside, which I unable to spot it earlier, ok, fine, in this case, I withdraw the lens for sale, to any buyers.

after sent it for cleaning, which cost me about $100, I put the lens for sale again, price it at $500.

the same buyer call me up, know that the lens has been clean, offer me $400 for the lens, said the lens is not tip top condition now.

will you ignore this guy if you were in my shoe?

iirc, 99% of cases to IMH is ppl refer 1, not patient self admit... thats in SG...

you still bothered to waste time and money replying to that thing?

anyway, to TS, since it has already been stated that there are dusts in the lens, you decide whether it's worth buying it, test it out and see for yourself. i'm no pro, but in my opinion YES IT IS TOO MUCH to ask the seller to send it for cleaning. if the seller can't sell the lens because it is dirty, that's his/her own problem; if you don't want to buy the lens because you think it's dirty, that's your own problem.

like many other have said, sellers are selling something that as it is, if you want the selling want to clean the lens on behalf for you is like asking a huge discount. and even after cleaning from the service centre, the lens also not guarantee 100% dust free.

So Most buyer will rather sell it to other people or ask you to send it yourself if you still want to lens.

I not hurry to sell that lens, but also want the buyer to buy a nice lens from me, of cause not at that silly price.

Whether it's too much to ask for would depend on the seller. If the seller refuses, then you know it's too much to ask for.

1) When you buy a second hand car, does the sales agent re-spray the car, clean interior for you?

2) When you buy a second hand flat, does the owner renovate for you?

is up to individuals, a re-spary used car or and nice renovated resale flat will be easier to sell and able to command a higher price.

but a clearing cost of a lens will cost 10% or more to it selling price, where as respray or painting of used car or flat only cost less than 1~2% to it selling price.
