serious no one should expect it to e as good as the nikon ($2k++ lens) unless the tokina is also selling at $2k+. direction comparison should be the sigma 18-50 or tamron 17-50.

The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 offers optical performance that is as good as the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 and Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS. But it does not have the built of the Nikon or the IS of the Canon. AF is also noisier and slightly slower.

But the Tamron easily trumps the Sigma equivalent unless Sigma made some improvements with their new macro version.

AT-X 165 PRO DX 16~50mm F2.8 Digital Single-Lens Reflex Private Interchangeable Lens

From the link provided by Tim, I am abit curious, why are they calling it "Private Interchangeable Lens"...

Does it meant to be "Privately for use with APS-C size DSLR?"

Don't take the words quite seriously. After all it is translated.

in the previous post, you said the tokina ain't as good as the canon/nikon(in what way? i do not know, and you did not say?). and so i replied that one shouldn't compare these as their price is too far apart.
What im suggesting is to do a comparison against the tamron/sigma equiv(be it image quality or build or AF). And if the tokina are on par with any of the 2, it is definitely worth taking a look.

from your previous post, you are simply comparing a <$800 lens with a $2k+++ lens.

only when the production item is out then we will know
pre production tests might be different from the final item

Errr... did you misquote me? :bsmilie:

This is what I said in reply #47:

"Since the 16-50 f/2.8 is jointly developed by Tokina and Pentax, you won't be seeing this lens until March 2007 (probably May for Singapore) when Pentax is ready to release their version. As for Tokina having a good track record, I am afraid only their recent offerings of 12-24 f/4 and 100 f/2.8 macro have earned good reviews. But I am sure their 10-17 Fisheye, 16-50 f/2.8 and 50-135 f/2.8 are going to be really good optically."

As for comparing a <$800 lens with a $2k+++ lens, my answer is: why not? :) As long as the lens performs and meets one's expectations, I think the comparison is justified. Of course, if you enjoy taking shots with a $2k lens and feel the urge to watermark the shots with the message: 'this is taken with a $2k lens', then I have nothing to say. :bsmilie:

haha :embrass: i tot you are the other guy =x

im actually replying to the guy who said that one shouldn't spend too much time looking at this lens as it doesn't perform as well as the nikon/canon counterpart.

no news for the lens yet? waiting for soooo long lao.

yes, very long... as someone mention release in Mar, availablein May... very long lah...
now i still wonder should i wait n see or just grab tamron 17-50mm.
My situation is,
- with Tamron, I save on filters I bought especially Hoya HMC CPL and R72 which is also 67mm.
- with 16-50mm I get the itsy bitsy extra wider and possible better lens (possible less vignetting bcos is 77mm filter size) but i have to spend xtra on new CPL... :o

Wait or not wait...:dunno:

just wanna check with you guys here...if the tamron 17-50 is available for sales in singapore stores already...

I know the Nikon mount is available in Spore liao.. Dunno Canon mount's stocks has arrived anot..

start selling feb 2007 (in Japan)
I think i can wait, if only for that extra 1mm on the wide side

I hope so too, but I think with that kind of specs, it will be priced higher than the tamron.. I cannot BBB liao..:bsmilie:

Hope the price is below $700.00;p

actually, the tamron 17-50 is a bit wider than the supposedly 17mm it is.. at least that's what i felt after using the tamron 17-35 for years and the 17-55 f2.8 IS for a while. Didn't do a test though.

It might actually approach a 16mm already.

Anyway, the tamron one is NOT as sharp as the canon 17-55.
If u got the moola, go for this lens, no regrets and it's value for $$. Why? typically, the IS system cost about $ 800 ( compare price diff btw lens that have Non-IS and IS version, eg 70-200 F4L, etc)
So for $1.6 K ( if u buy in HK, Singapore's price is out of proportion), you are paying $800 for a 17-55 F2.8 lens with SUPERB resolution that probably goes beyond any canon lens currently ( saved the 35mm F1.4). The resolution ( or sharpness, as layman goes) can probably out perform the 8mb sensors in most cams.
