No unfortunately it is just a PL not CPL, I will probably bring them to Singapore at Christmas, or I might take a walk over to the Arts Faculty and ask some of the Photography teachers if they want, they may even may be able to help with a step up ring maybe?

The problem with a step ring is that your camera body is only 55.8mm in diameter. Your lens retracts when closed and it will jam up the stuff. I think you get what I mean.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to put a PL/UV on the adaptor too. And well, 55.8mm is only specific to panasonic... actually only the FZ18 and 28... so it makes it harder. By the way you should be looking at 46mm filters.

If you really insist on stepping it... you can try skyguy's adapter if he still has it. But it will be really complicated and may cost close to just getting a new adapter on its own. If you choose this option... his adaptor steps down 55.8 > 52... you have to step it up 52> 58... and if you use a TCON, stepping it down again 58 >55... hmm.....

I have ordered a set of closeup and macro filters which are for a FZ 28 and they come with an adaptor, they are 46mm.
I understand what you mean about the lens jamming when it retracts, I am also a firm believer in the KISS process. Worse comes to worse I can give it away to someone who can put to good use.
By the way I have not told the wife that it does not fit, just thanked her for being thoughtful.;)

Gee you speak like a singaporean! Haha. What brand is the 58mm UV? I'll buy them off you so you get something back. =)

Which close up did you get anyway? Sounds like fun.

Anyway, just like to share some pictures today too...=) Not from FZ18 though but birds and macro should interest FZ18/28-ers I suppose.

Love this shot lots! I think the position of the wings can be better but I'm quite thrill when I saw this pic turn out fine.

Special thanks to skyguy for the aspect ratio cropping tip.

Dedicated to my friend for letting me use her lens =)
I felt as if I shot this in a studio environment, looks like it doesn't it?

Another attempt to overlay a gradient layer over a landscape picture. Seems to do wonders to the picture and its really simple. You can ask me if you don't understand what I mean, will be happy to share =)

hmm.. the picture quality seems to drop alot on CS doesn't it... I'm sure my original colors look alot better.

Hi ombre, dunno what brand filters are, just says made in Japan on ring (metal). Have not got closeup filters yet, maybe this week? Getting +1 +2 +3 +4 and macro +10.
I will bring 58mm Uv and PL to S/pore and pass to you (without wife seeing) for cheap lah, cup of coffee seems to be fair price. Do you think you know anyone that can make use of 58mm lens adaptor for FZ20?

How much are 4gb and 8 gb SD cards in S/pore? Is there any brand that is better value for $$? Which also reminds me that now S$ is stronger than A$ (also now known as Pacific peso)

in sg 8GB sdhc for kingston cheapest is S$30, need to find the right shop and place

sandisk is more expensive but good for the speed, but will need the micromate thumb drive to get the ideal speed

yes Vinze do come along, I wanna see my camera again. =X Bring Veron too, can do couple portraits. Haha!

If you're looking real cheap, and don't mind a brand called Transcend (I'm using it and I find it reliable for now... no issues)... I can't remember the price off hand, but 8GB should be like 24 dollars? and 4GB about 18? (First hand)

I might be wrong haha, I could pop by the shop someday again if you're interested.

However when I was using my FZ18, I invested in a nice card, the Sandisk Extreme III, 4GB for $45. Its a good card and comes with a card reader, ask Vinze he's holding it now haha. In my opinion it reduces the black out time after shots, its about twice as fast... but bearing in mind that twice as fast is only a split second, so you may not be as picky. =) Its also way faster in reviewing / deleting pictures. So it helps me a lot... I'm not always a patient man.

Also, the key is in the card reader, it reads at 19mbps... while the FZ18 reads at 0.7mbps through the USB cable. gee.

Thank-you guys, much cheaper than here, I also want things to happen quickly, I have a 2 gb Toshiba Ultra card that came with the camera. I want a back up card and something larger so I can take a few video clips mainly while fishing, and still have a bit of room to take stills. Tried to extend my stay in S/pore by another week until Jan 20 but no good. My wife is staying for CNY but all flights were full for me cuz I have to be back in Darwin on Jan 29.
Starting a new job.
What to do?:dunno:, will be back in June anyway.

Ah videos, then you better get a faster card with a card reader. I had a real pain in the neck waiting for 800mb of videos to transfer the other time... =X Took like 18 minutes?! In anycase, whatever the brand, I suggest staying away from Kingston. Its a good brand but FZ18 doesn't seem to like it, it lags on it.

There will be SITEX, an IT show coming up on Nov 27-30... memory usually goes cheap at such events, will you be here yet? If you're not, you could share your budget and capacity you want and I'll try get one for you first. =)

And I have a 1GB SD card and I think 2 or 3 small capacity ones (128mb) that I hardly or never use, bought during an emergency or left overs from ages ago... good for emergencies I guess. I'll let it go like dirt cheap.=)

Yeah I am sorry that I will not be there for Sitex, I arrive on Dec 18, then on 27 we go to Vietnam for four days with my wife's youngest son (CSer also) then return to S/pore NYE and I return to Darwin on Jan 12. Thanks for offering to purchase on my behalf but it will be easier to get wifes son actually the oldest (CSer also) to purchase for me cuz I know he will be going to Sitex with the other 85% of S/pore's population. Think I will also be interested in a small card.
Wife is staying for CNY but I start teaching at a new school on Jan 29 and could not extend past Jan 12. No seats available.
Not quite sure which son we will be staying with this time, but will let you know when "The one who must be obeyed" makes her decision. Doesn't matter to me I can find my way around to most places in Singapore by myself as long as MRT goes near.
Thank-you for your advice,

Cheers:)

I'm sorry but I have a complaint, or maybe it is just a little whinge. First of all let me explain that I was a Lithographic printer for about 25 years, so I consider that I do have a bit of experience with colour. Quite a good eye for colour actually. A couple of days ago I went fishing off the rocks one evening with a few mates and I snapped off a few pics in sunset mode. When I got home and down loaded the pictures they were quite good, too good actually, the oranges and reds were outstanding on the pc. The sunset was not really that impressive at all. I think I would rather have an real result and when you get the one shot that is a real stunner then you know you have got something special.
I have a few different shots as screen savers on my laptop at work and people have remarked about the beautiful colours of the sunsets, but I feel it is akin to cheating, it wasn't really like that.:nono:
What settings would you guys suggest to capture a real sunset?

yes.... sometime the camera do adjust the colour themselve (depending on the mode) so tat it give a very nice vivid colour which is not really the true colour of the object... and tat is also the reason why i usually switch to all different mode and take a shot each (when i have the time)... some customer actually like this type of function, but not all... i was trying out LX3 during one of the lumix workshop, and i switch one of the setting to vivid... and then i took some photo so stuff which the colour are rather dull... but it came out very bright and vivid from the LCD... which surprise me...

i haven't try taking sunset shot yet... maybe M, A, S, P mode should give the actual colour of the event...

For me, I've never liked using any of the color modes, most of the scene modes in any camera come with color tweaking, I believe especially landscape and sunset. Pretty much, the camera just does one simple color overlay on your picture, in some cases this can look gorgeous, like skyguy's case. However, I find this unnecessary as I can do it myself on photoshop with much greater control and choice of colors.

Beside scene modes, you have one other setting that tampers with your color of the sunsets. That's where you change your contrast, saturation, NR, etc. I think Saturation being the worse one.

Anyway, going down to settings for sunset, I recommend using the M mode only. The excess light from the sun makes it very difficult for the light meter as well. On your FZ, you should be using F8. Try not to zoom in, many people will tell you that a max aperture of F2.8 stopped to F8 gives way better results than a F3.6 stopped down to F8, although I have not personally verified this, its true for most dSLR lenses.

ISO 100 too, but even with that, you will get noise in the sky on the FZ (I did last time at least). Interestingly I got noise on mine too with my dSLR at ISO100.. oh wells, the sky makes noise prominent I guess.

So at the end, all you want to control is the shutter, depending on your preference of how bright it should be.

I haven't got a sunset to show but I do have a sunrise, I'm not sure if you call these natural colors (I didn't edit them at least), but I must disclaim that I think its a badly taken picture anyway! I wanted the picture to be somewhat gloomy with that "ray of hope" bursting out of the bottom, but I think having the sun right at the bottom turned out to be bad composure.

Hi guys, this a photo that I took on Sunset mode and there was nowhere as much colour as the picture shows.

next time I will take your advice and try some other settings. Trouble is the damn sun goes down so fast you have very little time to try everthing you want.

Cheers
