The geese fly over in waves of 3-50 birds in V formation at varying heights from just above the tree tops to 200 metres high. 12 guage shot guns only have an effective range of about 50-60 metres. There have been a number of attempts to start a rice growing industry here but the Magpie geese have always managed to ruin their efforts. The rice is sown by aeroplane and the geese follow the plane and land in the fields and eat the seed. The Government was supporting the rice project but has since given up, beaten by black and white birds.:bsmilie:

Sounds like fun by the way, 200 meters isn't very near, and with all the wind factored in, must be quite tricky unless you're counting on the spray of the shotguns. Don't shooters usually use hunting rifles these days?

Hi ombre, no rifles are allowed because of the range the bullet can travel. If you can imagine up to thirty shooters blazing away with high powered rifles, scarey.
You do count on pellet pattern spread and can vary the chokes to either concentrate or open the spread of pellets. It is possible to get 2 birds with 1 shot if you are lucky.
You have to lead the birds with your shot and actually aim in front of the bird.
Am going out again this afternoon, got to get them while the getting is good.
How about I freeze some goose meat and bring you some in December?

Thanks for Shane posting on Panasonic Lumix DMW-LA3 adapter. Please note that LA3 cannot use for FZ28 even though Panasonic doc shows it can. The problem is that when the FZ28 is at 28mm, there is a visible pin-hole ring at 4 corners. I had tried it myself and decided not to buy it. (It should works for FZ18 since this is mainly for FZ18 when it release in Aug 2007). We will have to wait for FZ28 adapter.

if you all dun mind a 3rd party LA3 can still get it from me anyway, works well

yes i noticed that on my FZ28 but once you zoom over 2x its gone :)

i see... so did u buy it??? maybe u should wait for sitex... or the 2nd hand from clubsnap

Nah... Actually I was looking for SP-570UZ but AP quote above my budget and the other shop no stock. So maybe wait for Sitex and I might still buy FZ28 if the price is right.

Hi Shane, so does your lens adaptor work OK or is there a problem? I ordered one on ebay last Fri for my FZ28 and have not got it yet.

Ah I see, anyway thanks for your offer, its too kind but I wouldn't want to trouble you! I wouldn't really know how to cook them well either! Singaporeans here eat out most of the time, we don't really cook I guess, not me at least. =) But thanks again!

There are quite a few reasons you want an FZ18 instead:

Bigger aperture on the zoom end, F4.2 vs F4.5 (FZ28 has F4.4 on the T end)
F0.3 may not look like much but it translates to 15% more light (or shutter speed) I am usually picky in this area, hah.

Lens threads for filters and conversion lenses (570 has no threads according to dpreview, but i thought i saw some tiny threads on it, I could be wrong.)

FZ18 is much cheaper

Slightly smaller sensor (1/2.5" vs 1/2.33") but better pixel density (32 vs 36 mp/cm^2) however this is the same comparing 570 against FZ28.

Longer minimum shutter speed (SP-570UZ only goes to min 4 seconds) If you want to do nice night landscapes we should be looking at 15 seconds at least.

FZ28 is supposed to have a stronger processor, but I've not seen strong comparisons really. I say the price is a good trade-off.

600 dollars (actually 700+) can buy you a decent 2nd hand dSLR ($400+) with a zoom lens ($300-) that should take get you better effective pictures than any of the 3 above with WAY less noise. If you don't really need a zoom then we're just talking about 500 for a 2nd hand dSLR. (and you can still change your mind later). This is the reason I sold my FZ18 anyway =)

Hope it helps!

Hi akak,

You might like to note that the DMW-LA3 is in fact the official adapter for FZ28, there won't be a new one coming out.

As for the vignetting problem that you mentioned, the dark circle you see at the wide end, that's normal. It appears on the FZ18 as well, however, the FZ28 is slightly wider (27 vs 28mm), therefore it should be SLIGHTLY more prominent. But that's normal. If you noticed that there is a conversion option in your FZ28 or FZ18 that actually locks up your zoom to a min of 2X or 9X depending whether you set it to Close-up or Tele Conversion. The reason is quite obviously because the DMW-LA3 is not designed to function at wide angle.

If you still want to leave it on permanently (I previously did, it works well as a hood and saves the hassle), there are a few ways to work around it. 1) When you are taking wide angle pictures, change your aspect ratio to 16:9 (I believe 3:2 clears it too). 2) Otherwise always zoom in to 2X.

Alternatively you can buy over skyguy's adapter, his comes in 2 parts, you can just remove the front part so that you can get a clear wide angle shot. ^^ and its considerably cheaper than the DMW-LA3, but its not mine so you better ask him about this, hah!

Thanks Shane, did you buy a Panasonic TCON or another brand and how much was it?

wow... ok u are quite brave... i will most probaly move as far from the insect as possible...

Haha. I've liked bugs and such since I was a kid actually. Especially praying mantises. To each his own, eh? I know I'm weird. :bsmilie:

Nice shot! But are you sure it tried to climb on your cam? It looks as terrified as insects can get. Quite brave of you to go that close tho.

In anycase, I had some bad experiences taking insects and tall grass areas. Once I was trying to snap something and I took quite long. After awhile, I looked down and both my legs were being swarmped by ants and I didn't even realized! I so totally freaked out.

Wow! Did they bite you? Sounds painful. Yeah I would consider that a REALLY bad experience too. Just gotta be careful I guess.

Thanks for the compliment. I guess I'm just not that fearful of bugs cos I like 'em.

For this shot, I actually picked up the fella (in a plastic bag), and put it on a plant so it would be eye level, easier to get a shot. I had alot of "ruined" shots when it kept grabbing hold of my lens and climbing up. Waiting fot this pose took ages.

And here's a picture of hotplate beancurd. I kind of like it cos the texture can be seen. Can almost TASTE it.

And... Hungry yet? :D Black pepper chicken chop with rice (and egg)

The egg looks yummy, haha!

Tip for you, maybe you like to bump the F stop up a little (makes it look sharper) and lessen the flash (if you did use, cant really tell), less of those distracting reflected light =)

Thanks for the tip. Shall try it next time.

Oh I didn't flash. That's from the overhead lights in the place. No idea why the places I dine in are SO brightly lit. So UN-romantic. :bsmilie:

alright, in case anyone is interested in the 3rd party LA3... anyway, i dun think i am keen to send it to sydney, sorry, too much trouble. I'm not in the need or eager to sell it... i just dun need it at this point of time... if somehow i got my hand on a TCON in the future i most probaly won't sell it.

Below are the photo for the 3rd party LA3

DSC00705.JPG

the adapter can be split into 2 piece, but both piece will have 52mm thread at the end so u can use 52mm filter... but when at wide adapter, once u attach a 52mm filter u won't be able to zoom...

I'm not sure if my concept works... but here's my thought. Worth a stab in the dark perhaps.

If its too bright, then drop the shutter speed really really low, so that the whitish edges don't appear, and then use a (most probably diffused) flash to brighten up your subject again, so its more or less even =X

Anyway to Shane, maybe you could convince Clunk to bring the adapter back to Australia for you and send it via domestic mail or something, hah.
