I managed to get a Japan colleague to send me the camera - hooray. :D He admitted that the shop at Ogisaku is among one of the cheapest(it was actually a lead from our fellow CS member, see posts a few pages back). Now the hard part is to send the money across as banks impose heavy charges on the receipent (about $200) so am trying to get someone to bring the $ for me... I think I will be taxed GST upon arrival but it will still be approx $250 cheaper compared to S$ prices.

Maybe when I make a trip to Japan next time, will let you know can tompang or not. I learnt that there is a big second hand market there and Japanese keep their items very well. So may be possible to get a good Oly lens at a good price...

i think u can just send your friend an International Bank Draft. its just like a normal cheque, but at international level, only the receipent with the same name as the draft is eligible to cash it. i don't think there's any extra charge on the receipent. u can get a draft from major Post Office or a cheque (only available for major currencies) from banks. hope this helps.

ask your friend to send it to u as a christmas gift through normal registered mail? by the time it arrived, it wud be dec already. i think u can get away with it. ;p

whats good to buy at their 2nd hand market? at least need to see the goods before buying, right? :bsmilie:

keep me inform, if u like, PM me with such info. thx in advance.

(ps. u can PM me your email so that i can send u pics taken with the 14-54mm. looking at the tomatoes, i prefer them redder & fresher looking. :) )

first of all, thanks to Chancy for the patient explanation. It will take me a while to digest as I have not been a serious photographer so far, so I hv a lot to learn..

Nightpiper, thanks for your suggestion. Actually, that was what I tried to do last year, but you might not believe it - regardless of whether TT or bank draft, the bank actually imposes a hefty charge - it's ridiculous but true. I seems the banks are trying to earn from such transactions. The good news - I found somehow to bring the $ for me.

For 2nd hand market, I guess have to know specifically what to buy and the shop is reputable. I think Cookiez in this forum seems to have good leads. I don't mind making the contact once I have the info, just like for the Ogisaku shop. :D

I will clear up my msg box and pm u my email. But I am wondering if the 14-54mm is redundant since the kit comes with the 14-45mm. :)

well, if u r looking at a shallower DOF, the 14-54mm gives a tad more. personally, i dun think it differs that much but u gain a little on the longer end too. i just find the 14-54mm is a very good overall lens. :)

say, wud u be able to get those adaptor mount rings from 4/3 to nikon in japan? i m looking for cheaper source rather than cameraquest. keep me in the loop. :)

Can you please give me the exact item name/no or provide a link. I will ask the shop for a quote and see what I can do.

here is the link to the adaptor. http://www.cameraquest.com/adapt_olyE1.htm

i don't know any model or brand but i think japan shud have their own such adaptors. imagine u put on a Leica lens or Carl Zeiss lens on the E300/E1. me very tempted by the Leica macro lens.

anyway, see what u can dig up in japan. thx & may the force be with u.

Hi nightpiper,

Pls see this link
http://www.kindai-inc.co.jp/mount_fosa.htm

This is one of the recommended shops but it seems that the price is about $330 which is not much different from the pricing from your website. Do you know the prices in Singapore? Anyway, I will also check with the ogisaku shop and let you know.

didn't find the 4/3 mount to nikon. am i not reading the jap words correctly?

oops... read it again & there's a line that says for Oly E1 body. ;p

there r 2 pricing: 1 is 16k yen & the other 22k yen. what's the diff? sorry, my jap is only half bucket.

if u can get it cheap, get one for me. thx a million!! :vhappy:

(ps. there's no on-line purchase for this site?)

Hi nightpiper,
This is a four-thirds mount for Oly. The first line shows a Nikon mount. The 2 prices - one of time at retail and the other a wholesale price. Unless we have sufficient quantities, don't think the wholesale price applies. However, I hv read on the related website that some users experienced focussing problems. :( Hv you ever try them out?

i have not tried any of them but i read else where the one offered by cameraquest is ok. it will let u focus in the same range as the lens indication.

precisely what kind of focusing problems? if Oly can offer an adaptor for OM lenses, i dun see why other brands would have any problems. what do u reckon?

Hi nightpiper, this looks interesting for MACRO shooting where loosing AF and 1-stop not an issue. What is the effect on focal length when using these adapters, Does the 2x crop factor still applies ? Imagine mounting a Sigma 50-500mm that becomes 100-1000mm :o .

$900 is not much better than local prices. Ask CP or AP what the price is.

I have taken pics with this lens because I own one. It's really that good.

Kah Heng,
CS quoted me $950. :( How much did you get yours for? Thanks

Can someone one enlighten me how to see if the camera can mount a certain lens? Like whether nikon sigma tamron lens can mount onto this oly e300?

The e300 uses a new 4/3 lens mount system. At present, only Oly and Sigma produces lens of this mount.

Sounds like it's wiser to invest in those 4/3 mount? But in sites like photographyreview.com doesn't tell me the mount system?
