Shot with my S2IS and Raynox-DCR1540. Focal length should be around 660mm.

Hi Cerebus,

Love your moon shot. It's beautiful and peaceful. Great work!

Thanks whoswho. I took this while waiting for fireworks last Sat. It was not very peaceful on the bridge at that time! :bsmilie:

there's already a thread for moon shots IIRC..

anyway yr moon is a tad bit overexposed IMO

Sorry, did not know that. Which forum is it under?
Yeah, I tired a few exposures. If I do not want anything to be blown out, the rest of the moon becomes too dark.

Can anyone advise th settings for moon photography?

My cam is up to f8 only.

There's usually some recommended settings in night photography books, but I've always forgotten the values after reading it up. But what you can try is something along the lines of 1/250s at f/8 at ISO 200. Do remember that the camera will indicate severe underexposure under such settings, but the moon should turn out just fine. Don't let the darkness of the sky fool the camera into overexposing.

This one was taken at 1/320s f/5.6 at ISO 400. But it turned out overexposed. I postprocessed it to save some detail.

Yeah, I'd like to know the settings. Unfortunately cerebrus's moon image has no exif data to peek at :( It does look sharp, though.

On another note, is there any post-processing that needs to be done on the captured moon photo?

I lost the EXIF when I was post processing. It was shot in manual mode. Its 1/100, f4.0. Focus at infinity. Lowest ISO, since my P&S sensor is really noisy. My in camera setting is low sharpening, did a bit of blur/sharpen via something similar to USM. I also corrected white balance as it was on auto when I shot it. The moon had a blue tinge to it. Cropped the photo slightly.

I doubt I can ever achieve what fWord has produced.

One thing you have to remeber, you are shooting reflected sunlight, so do not need long exposures.

Anyone else have moon shots?

If you tweak the photo using curves in Photoshop, it might yield something with a higher contrast.

There's been a great deal of potential moon shots recently, but I regret not having the camera with me at that time.

Still trying to master using curves. Have not got the hang of it yet. Thanks for the advise!

Hi, thanks for your replies. I've been trying moon shots too, but my results are not sharp at all :( Will need to fiddle around somemore with my lenses.

BTW, for those interested, Moonrise and Moonset Times, for Singapore :)

My guess is that at moonrise time, i.e. nearer the horizon, it should be larger and therefore we don't need so powerful a zoom...

What camera are you using? A dSLR sensor should be able to produce pictures that are sharper then mine. It helps if you have a long zoom lens, I am using a Tele converter to give me 660mm.

Thanks for the table. Unfortunatly, I am surrounded by buildings there is no horizon in sight where I live. :bsmilie:

:bsmilie: 660mm is a bigger gun than mine. Ultimately still have to cheat by cropping off the dead space though.

Hi,

Full moon tonight!

moon-060809-2.jpg

Shot at 300mm with my Nikon D50 with the AF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G lens. 1/320s @ f6.3.

Image is not resized, and is simply cropped to current dimensions. The original capture image had a very flat contrast which needed a level adjustment to increase the contrast. Is this a normal thing?

I think the final result is still not as sharp as the 2 earlier posted though :( Any tips to get sharper moon shots?

Hi all,

I would like to share with my attempt last month, on the July 15th ....

Moon_060715_101.jpg

This was taken with the Canon 75-300mm, with a Tamron 1.4x Tele-converter, at f/5.6 and shuttle speed of 1/100 sec, with the aid of a remote control.

This was my first attempt, C&C welcome.

I have since sold my 75-300mm lens and this is the only thing that I missed about this lens. My 70-200mm is not long enough to take the moon unless I get a 2x or 3x tele-converter ;)

Cheers
KC Tay :D
