Hi,

I think you'll need to get a telescope first. You'll also need a tele-extender to insert your eyepiece inside. After that, get a nikon mount T-ring to couple it to your camera body.
I suggest u start with prime focus first cause eyepiece projection will require a very stable and tracking mount.

You can get these accessories from Astro-Scientific Centre at the Omni-theatre. Or here: http://www.mcgill.com.sg/shop/ Which should be cheaper.
This illustration might help :http://www.stargazing.net/Astroman/Craters.html

Good luck!

Hi Traveler,

Hi, yes u'll need a nikon mount T-ring cause you're using a D200. As for the Vixen telescope, any telescope is fine for eyepiece projection. You can contact Mcgill for the relevant accessories cause many of them are not listed on his website.

mine.

Two eyes are better than one. This is a stereoscopic view of the moon. Defocus your eyes so you see 2 pairs of the images, then combine the middle two to see a 3d image.

Wah! Bro ArchRival. Thanks for the stereoscopic view of the moon.

Seem very good quality moon you have there, powerful lens

Here's my shot of the moon done last night with the C5. Finally managed to get it done.

ha ha. congrats !!!

Thanks M8, here s a larger version of the same image, will try again in a few days when its full moon and if the sky is clear. Tried eyepiece projection with a 17mm, got blurred images even after after stacking 4 to 5 frames, seems tough without a tracker or fast shutter speeds but will keep experimenting.

Actually, when the moon is full, the details of the craters are lost as the moon is too bright.

So, you've been shooting without a tracking mount ? WOW !!! I should see your setup - the tripod and the head. Wonder what's the maximum weight that it can take. I am looking at a combi that I can use when travelling, so that I only need to take my C6 - without carrying the huge tripod and tracking mount and all the accessories.

what software did you use to stack the images ?

Yes I agree , I also feel that I get better details under exposing the moonshots.

The ball head is a Kangrinpoche NB2-A according to CP's specs can take up to 32Kg.

They were giving discount over and above the sale price so I thot it was not a bad deal.

It is great for shooting landscapes.

For telescope use I ll recomend the photographic slow motion controls.. basically a tilt and shift with very fine tuning. That should work better.

I also use elastic bicycle hooks to apply some pressure to the scope to hold it in place and reduce vibration/shake.

The manfrotto 055MF4 tripod weighs 2 kg, can take up to 7 Kg I think. This is my travelling tripod. Small enough to pack into a check-in lauggage.

For stacking I tried CombineZM, might try out regiStax heard its not bad. Given my IT knowledge it will take a while :(

Last night's attempt. D200 + C8 + 0.63 focal reducer at prime focus

Hi,
Bring out my equipment to take some fresh air yesterday night. The weather wasn't good and the sky was cover with high altitude cloud. The Full Moon look very hazy, but anyway I just shoot the Moon to test the Vixen R135S. Took 100 images, but only 27 was used to stack. Below is the image:
Moon_Day16.jpg

Moon Day 16 on 26 Oct 2007 at Tampines, Singapore
Vixen R135S with 2x Tele-Extender (Focal Length: 1440mm)
Canon 300D @ Prime Focus
Stacked 27 Images @ISO 100, F10.7, 1/80s in RegiStax 4 and process in Photoshop.

Have a nice day.

Just learning how to shoot the moon through a spotting scope.

Using the Celestron C90 MAK coupled with Canon 350D.

Focal length 1200mm, Prime Focus, F STop 13.3, Shutter speed 1/5 Secs, Tripod mounted, Non tracking, Single exposure., shutter release.

Still not very detailed due poor focusing. Image sharped and curved during PP.

Shot just 40 mins ago in between patches of clouds prior to the thunderstorm

Any pointers to help me improve will be appreciated. Thanks in advance ;)
