Anyway I am suggesting Tarmon 28-200. Personnally I find that with a price tag of around $450 this lens is consider cheap but since yeppie99 didn't give a budget for us, So I just suggest a lens that I consider as "cheap & good". This lens also good for beginner who don't know what he/she really interested in shooting as it cover a wide range. Personnally, I find myself normally shoot between 28 -> 110mm. So next lens on my list will be a 50mm 1.8fD (for speed and quality). ;)
Hmm.... I think a 70-300 len will be better lor! The sigma 70-300 macro (Docile has it) Can take distance subjet, oso take macro subject.

But if he really going for a good len ie(70-200/2.8 or 4) then it more adviseable to save enough for it. There is no point spending more if it is going to stay in the dry cabinet after purchaing the newer len.

If this lens is above average then I would like to know what lens is below average. :-)

Hee hee, good question!
Acturally I got the performance rating from those camera review site (eg. http://www.photographyreview.com), this lens got quite a high rating.
Maybe it could be that my standard is below average which make this lens above average for me. As to compare with another lens, Personnally, I can only say it is better then nikkor 28-80mm (cos this is the only other lens I use before) in term of sharpness.
No matter what, the performance of the end system must be better the an P&S camera, right? ;)
BTW any one here still use P&S camera? I still have my very trusty and handy nikon 35Ti  , will take that if I don't want to carry a big camera.

gd idea! i think the idea of a relatively good 3rd party lens would be what i would be getting after the body. the tamron lens sounds pretty good for that price but do they have it for canon? how is the image quality too?

if i do lose interest in photography after using the 50mm lens, then i'll admit that i'm a crap and fickle person. but i seriously doubt this situation will happen. besides, i plan to get the 70-200 or something similar within 1-2 months, when i get my next few mths pay. thus the time span is not as big as some of you might imagine.

hi, yeppie,
wanna to buy the eos 30 together with me, so we can bargain for a better price.

Today i went and checked the price. Know what?
the price quote by AP is cheaper than Cp one!

At first I pretend that I am a beginner (indeed , I am ) but just pretend don't know the price.

A salesperson quote me:
F80 (w/28-80mm) $ 780
28-105mm (nikon) $ 585
EOS30(w/28-105mm) $ 880 ---> 850 (the equote is not available)
28-105mm $450

Luckily I read a lot (pretend pretend like an expert, actually I am not) Just don't panic and calm +steady. (if not , sure kenna "chop" one!) wahaha.

CP a bit expensive:(I approached to Steven)
F80 with 28-105mm $800 ? ( roughly lah)
EOS 30 (body only!!!) $ 880 ? (wah! so expensive , more expensive than the equote one! luckily I got an equote first!!!! the price from the equote is around 845 !!!! so better do your homework!!!!

others:
from AP:
A40 around $530 CP gave me $540!
995 around 950 (i think should be 900!)

By the way, I think 28-105 lens is good! but a bit too expensive for a beginner, yeppie, want /recommend some other lens? I have no idea :(

wait a minute, u mean at AP EOS 30 with 28-105mm is $880? sure a not? then CP is EOS 30 body for $880? so AP is selling EOS 30 without lens for $430? can't be rite?

and isn't steven from AP?

sorry, today went out whole day until blur blur liao........really like "sotong" liao......... forgot to say what I felt for the first time holding these 2 SLRs in my hands!
These two are great!
But I prefer EOS30! I think I have followed the steps similar to some buyers (before holding the SLRs die die must get a Nikon, but changed their minds when they have a chance to get hold of EOS30! Unless you are a die hard Nikonian! For a beginner, really cannot resist the force!)
(what I felt for F80) Just like holding a toy "made in Thailand"?
The feeling was so nice! Since these 2 are similar in most of the specs, therefore I think I will join the "Dark side"?
The design /weight for the EOS30, really nice and great! really nice.......

alamak!
1) of course not $430so cheap. Only the lens (28-105mm ) lens ONLY! Canon one!
2) In the camera "fairprice" (what the ppl in AP told me) , there are more than 1 salesperson leh. ) Steven is one of them. Yeap, normally Steven gives good price for regular customer (=rich customer?) but I want to try other salesmen, see how they encounter a rare/seldom appeared customer like me? haha. After testing, not so bad lah, Steven is NOT the ONLY salesperson in AP that can give you good price, man! as long as you know the lowest possible price, then you are safe!
3) By the way, I need the suggestion for the my ONLY one lens system as a start (but not 28-80mm , please!)

Of course leh!! Buy together (die together!)
No lah, buy together, cheaper! Unity is power!!!!
Sure lah, but don't say that I said one( i mean , the price).
You must "pretend" mah.........
If you go to the shop and tell them the price should be $8xx straight away, that is not the way!
Must try to bargain.
Or just walk into the shop and say," $800! Final answer!".:D
MUst enjoy the process mah, not the result.;p

yes! bingo!
I told the salesman that I want to trade the 28mm-80mm back, they said can. But I must top up the difference leh. (The price I typed is the price for a new one);)

Again it depends on what u will be shooting, and prime or zoom u r after? Give more details so that the guys here can help. But personnally I find for general shooting (party event, landscape, portrate) I will recommand a zoom range starting from at least 28mm and the other will be at least greater then 80mm. So the range 28-80mm is a good zoom to start unless you know that lens is had poor performance.
I can suggest the tarmon 24-135mm, it is a good range and some bro (btw is there any lady here?) here own it too.
If you talking about canon lens then I not sure liao, but nikon got other good zoom range for general shooting maybe u can find the same in canon,
28-105mm, 24-85mm, 24-120mm.
but do check on their performance in the review first and ask the guys here before u buy.

Lastly if you get a quote that is very good don't be too happy, and forgot to monitor the price quote for the accessories. My friendquoted a very low price for SLR and the lens. But he too happy that he didn't realise that the price quote for the accessories he bought is sky high.
I remember when I went with him to the store to ask the boss to break down the price in the receipt (cos only a lump sum figure), the boss don't look happy and refuse and when he finally did, the price was scary.
CR123 battery each cost $15 (norm $6.50)
A UV filter of unknow brand $50 (The store next door quote $15)
A small camera case that only fits the SLR+Lens $80
Camera strip (thick) with Nikon printed on it $50

What I trying to say is if the accessories the shop sell to too expensive, then don't buy from them just get the body and lens. Then buy accessories else where.

Hi all,

I am moving this thread over to Consumers Corner where I feel it is more approiate. Since most of the discussion here is about equipment purchase and price/feature comparison.

Thanks.

Roy

thanks. I know the catch-- That is I will only buy the body and one lens first. The rest, next time. I read many similar tricks in some forums also.
Yes, 28-105 is (nikon or canon one) among the good performance lenses. Just that bit expensive. 28-80mm not many ppl recommend this lens.

Huh? I am surprised! Don't retailers include the above 3 items together with the camera?

No normally not, but they will ask you to buy as a package. Even my F80s didn't come with any accessories, just the body itself. But batteries no choice had to buy, need to test the camera. If I didn't remember wrongly, the shop also charge me about $8 for the CR123.

yeppie,

today I went to people's park,
Canon EOS 30 only $550!!!!
but I think is "grey grey grey" market one....:(
One of the shop (1st floor, corner)
International warranty.
Really "ah beng " leh, I just asked few things, he said, "why you ask so much? We guarantee you afraid what?".

too bad.......

AP again:
another thin guy, I don't know his name,
wow! He give the quote $900 for EOS 30 (body only). So, better careful oh!!!
