Erm then i suggest getting the eos30 and a 50mm first :)
i agree as well... the camera body is your foundation. you can get better lens later but it's much more difficult to get a better body later. :D

yes i know that upgrades shouldn't be on my mind even before i buy a camera. but now seeing that the price of a 70-200mm or anything that goes beyond 200mm is beyond my budget, i must as well use my budget to get a body that i fancy rather than getting something that is 2nd choice. i look at it this way, better the get the good body now and save for the lens i want rather than get the lens i want now and CHANGE bodies. to me, i rather add on instead of change. is this point of view considered ridiculous? it seems quite logical to me now.....

So what would you do in the meantime with the "make shift" lens??? Change your photography preference to suit the equipment you buy??? I'm not saying the 50mm lens is not useful. Yoiu might find it a good lens to use but ask YOURSELF, which lens do you need more to pursue your preference.

You haven't bought anything yet so how do you know an upgrade is a certainty? Unless you value equipment more than images..............

but then the fact that i'm buying something that is not my top choice makes me feel uneasy and slightly unhappy. at least if i get the eos30 i can be happy coz i bought the body i desire and eagerly anticipate my next lens.

Fair enough if that's the case the go for it. How bout anticipate some good images too while you're at it?

You're welcome and good luck in whatever you get.

As for my setup, would prefer not to say as I think its not going to help you in anyway.

Again, who told you that???

I used to own the 28-135 and at the wider end, its almost the same as the 28-105. No problem with AF in dim light at all, maybe slower but certainly not a problem. How often do you need fast AF?

yeppie99, you said you would prefer the 70-200 so I assume that you'll need that 70-200 more than the 50? So why compromise and get a lens which you don't need just to get a better body??? Think of it this way, with the 70-200, you can shoot in the 50 range with both 30 or 300. With the 50, you can't reach the range of the 70-200. So ask yourself, which do you REALLY need? The lens is more important in any case in my opinion.

I'm not against of upgrade but to think you need to upgrade even before you buy anything is just plain ridiculous.

Sorry. May be I read too much until i confused already.
By the way, you seems know so much, are you a professional photographer? do you have any suggestion for beginners? Thanks in advance!:)

Some of us here are first-timers into the SLR experience. Seriously, with a tight budget, I don't see anything wrong with getting a EOS30 and a 50mm f/1.8. My guess is that yeppie is not so sure about what kind of focal length he really needs, that is common of all starters. One would really like to try different fields of photography before deciding which one he wants to go into. And a 50mm f/1.8 is a relatively cheap but good lens to start with. Yeppie is planning for a 70-200 or longer cos he thinks he is going to try wildlife shoots next time.

Kit, my personal opinions here, I think you're a little too hard on the guy. Perhaps you really have very sound and valuable advices, which renders our advices rubbish, then maybe you can share them in a more amicable fashion. And in addition, your opinions might not work for yeppie, everyone has different demands and expectations and level of commitment for photography.

actually its ok. i know he sounds a bit harsh but i know its not personal can oredi. hope you guys won't get into another 'heated' discussion' again..... i guess everyone is right in a certain way, maybe not in the eyes of another person, but after all, we are here to share and not put down people's opinions right?

filter leads to telephoto lens, telephoto leads to D30,
D30 leads to 1D, which leads to no MONEY!

better body better lens = donations from members :D

preferably i want a 70-200mm to start with but if i get a more expensive body i'll have to settle for a 50mm for the time being.

The zoom range of what u want (70-200) and what you settle for (50mm) differ quite alot (considering between the 200 and 50). It may in return affect what you are shooting in the end. Just for example, you get the 70-200mm may because u like shooting birds, distanced object/people (and hopfully not being notice ;p ) but a 50mm will make you unable to perform such shots, ended up u had to shoot nearby object/people.
It may not be your cup of tea in taking such pictures, in the end you may lose your interest in photography or ended up trying to a new lens that you orginally wanted.

Finally I would suggest a better body and a good performance third party lens with the zoom range you need.

I'm not sure about canon system (Which seem to be what you interested) but for nikon system I would suggest a F80 and Tarmon 28-200. Not a bad lens for that lens with a price tag of around $450 and the performance is above average also. Maybe you can try to get a canon body with this lens.

Anyway I am suggesting Tarmon 28-200. Personnally I find that with a price tag of around $450 this lens is consider cheap but since yeppie99 didn't give a budget for us, So I just suggest a lens that I consider as "cheap & good". This lens also good for beginner who don't know what he/she really interested in shooting as it cover a wide range. Personnally, I find myself normally shoot between 28 -> 110mm. So next lens on my list will be a 50mm 1.8fD (for speed and quality). ;)
