never tried before, but it depends on what u intend to use it for. if u need a fast lens, to shoot events or smth along those lines, then i dun think u shud get it, since the most u can have is f5.6 at 85mm.

personally, i think u shud keep ur 18-70. it's a good lens to have. if i were in ur shoes, i'll go for a tele lens 1st. like what others have mentioned, 80-200 is a good lens to have.

It depends on your needs, really. If you need the VR for the tele end, get the 70-200. But you said it's out of your budget so I didn't recommend that. If you have the money, of course, that's the ultimatum you should go for.
But if I'm not wrong, the 80-200 is not tack sharp wide open. You might need to stop down 1/2 to 1 stop. But then again, few lenses, other than the trinity lenses, are tack sharp wide open.

Bro, you seems to be shooting round 35 to 55mm region primarily... Nikkor dun short of performance lenses in this range. Maybe u like to keep your current lens and try a 35mm or 50mm prime for a change?
Try borrow or rent one before actual purchase. Try Sigma 24mm, 35mm, 50mm.. which may give u a feel of what can be best for your stylings. Cheers!
