So if u have a ND400, it would be

5 * 400 = 2000s = 33 mins 20secs

bro, ND400 is a 9-stop filter...

if based on your theory, 2^9 = 512 and not 400..

I am a little confused here. or am I wrong ?

dont bother with shots over 1min... cos you will get long sexposure noise for digital cameras. even star trail shots, do it in multiples of 30s, rather than one long exposure of 30mins.

buttie, I beg to differ on exposures for longer than 1min. Have done 3mins exposure for my sunset shots and seascapes etc. The reason why in star trail shots and night shots long exposure noise is because noise in prominent in shadows (i.e. dark areas). So exposures longer than 5mins etc u will definitely see noise in the shadows.

Long exposures for daytime with ND400 or ND110 would not induce that much noise as the scene is pretty well lit even at 10mins. Reason why some people even go for long exposures in the day is for the motion of clouds etc and water smoothness.

One point worth taking note, which u r right abt the limitation of digital sensors. Other than long exposure noise, is the hot spots that may arise due to overheating of the sensor.

Nope. ND400 is approximately 9 stops. If u do a search on ND400, it's actual no. of stops is 8 2/3.
