Air France Plane’s Recorders May Be on Ocean Floor, Jobim Says







“I’m not optimistic,” Paul-Louis Arslanian , director of
the body conducting the inquiry, told journalists at a press
conference in Paris today. “It’s not only deep but mountainous
in that part of ocean. Recorders can be a great help but aren’t
essential to an investigation.”
The wreckage may be as deep as 3,000 meters (9,800 feet),
French Energy Minister Jean-Louis Borloo said today.

The boxes emit signals for 30 days after an accident ,
according to French officials. The recorders are actually bright
orange, to distinguish them from other equipment in black or
gray casing.
Brazilian investigators today said they are still working
under the assumption that there are survivors.
“Until the airplane is found and the way of finding the
debris shows that it is technically impossible to find
survivors, we’ll still support the idea there’s a chance of
finding survivors,” Brazil’s Amaral said today.

recorders, Christophe Prazuck, a French Defense Ministry
spokesman, said in a phone interview. The sub, which can dive
6,000 meters, is on a boat that will take about eight days to
reach the area.
