Tamron's new 24-70mm f2.8 VC

Anyway, how do you guys test if VC is working? My shots always have motion blur with VC on, even when shooting at 1/10. On live view, when i shake the camera, it still doesn't look stabilize. It's also seems to be draining my battery. Last night before i switch off my cam, it was at 98%, this morning when i switched it on, it was at 95%.

Shooting at 1/10s with VC, it doesn't mean that just because of the VC, there will be zero motion blur.
General rule of thumb is 1/focal length, but even so, there can still be motion blur if you are not stable enough.

If you experience blur at 1/10, this is normal. Not many people can remain perfectly still for that period, which is like an eternity for the shutter to close. Also since you are using the 1Dx, which is a fairly heavy body with a fast returning mirror, I'm not surprised at all if you experience blur at that speed. Try shooting at faster speeds and see if you still experience blur.

VC is not a cure for motion blur, it only helps to some extent. You still need to try to remain as still as possible when you shoot.
One recommendation: try not to move till a bit longer AFTER the mirror has returned. I found that this helped to reduce my blur shots, or increase my keepers.

Here is one example of a handheld shot at 1/15, f8, iso 250 at 24mm:

Here are some shots i took today. Taking the time off from whining since i'm sending it back to service center next week. When the focus is spot on, it looks not bad, otherwise most of the time it's either back focusing or the focusing is shifted to the right or left away from the actual focus point. All shots are taken at center af point with in camera sharpening. No sharpening done in pp.

1. Focus is on the flower.

2. Focused at the cat's eye, but the paw in front is in focus instead.

3. Focused at statue's eye

4. Focused at the rice but the vege on the left is in sharp focus instead.

5. Focused at the top ngoh hiang but the back one is in sharp focus instead.

the general rule of thumb u mentioned is for camera shake, not motion blur.

You've got a very good copy of the lens there. Looks very sharp.

Just bought the Tamron 24-70 VC today. Did so test shot at home. f2.8 is indeed soft but by f4 onwards its very sharp. I think its sharp enough for me at f2.8 so enjoy using this value for $ lens.

Taken at f2.8 using tripod with VC Off.

No 2. is very obvious... I guess you you did micro adjustment on your camera? Mine have to set it to '-5' to get the correct focus. Hope your lens will be fine after coming back from the service centre.

Well I did. On the wide end, I have it at +3 but on tele, a +- doesn't seem to make it any sharper or in focus.

just wondering.. did your considered Sigma's 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM?

I did a comparison of all three 24-70 lenses from Canon, Sigma and Tamron. The Sigma is not as good as the other two based on measured data that is available on the Internet. Especially on a full frame body, the Sigma pales in comparison. I posted the results of the comparison here in this thread. Dec12.

Cheers.

After yesterday meet up, Mabmy's lens was giving very inconsistent results. Hope your lens can work well after the repair by Tamron.

yup, we tested Mabmy's lens n camera, erratic is all I can say. I suspect it is the VC & unique to ur camera with lens combi thats causing all this problems. when i use ur lens on my camera there was no problem.

Thanks guys for taking your time to meet up, truly appreciate it. I was just glad it wasn't me. So strange though, i had no problem with the 28-75 on my cam and you have no problem with my lens on your cam during the test :bsmilie: I enjoyed the short session though with the good tips on shooting as well. ;)

for the 70mm shot, you are seeing the effects of shallow depth of field. The focal point is the letter "H" and it should be sharp (provided no camera shake and it looks like there is no camera shake).

You probably took the shot at minimum focusing distance - big aperture, short object distance, these 2 factors will contribute to a narrow depth of field. Hence the adajacent letters will not look sharp.

After the meet up I did some test of real world subjects like flowers, cats etc... And I am very pleased with the results.

Good to know that you have a very good copy bro. I decided to sell off mine. Not worth the hassle to me. :(

Yap. You should just get Canon 24-70 MkI or MkII. Both are great lens.
After playing with your 1DX makes me miss Canon camera. lol.

Ha ha ha! Don't come back to Canon camp. You brought along a very poisonous setup yesterday. I almost succumb to the strong poison. Lucky I got the "no money" antidote. :bsmilie:
