Tamron's new 24-70mm f2.8 VC

The 1D4 and 5D3 are different, and that's why I got both. The 1D4 is a speed king, for when I want to get the shot and not miss anything.
IQ its pretty close, though IMO the 5D3 has slightly better colors. For crop magnification, 1D4 has the edge.

Which do I prefer? lol...depends on what I'm shooting. I think you should know already from the description above, they suit different purposes.

Kenneth, one question on owning both 1D4 n 5D3. Why don't you just get the 1Dx? I am in the same dilemma. :)

I had contemplated that very question too for quite long.
Canon took so long to release the 1Dx and the 5D3 came along much quicker. Having read the reviews of the 5D3, I jumped at it first and was very happy with it.
It does have more resolution at 22mp than the 1Dx, though not a big deal more than the 5D2, in other areas it was a jump in the right direction on many fronts.
The 1Dx was announced so much earlier, yet it took so much longer to reach the market, I just didn't know how shooting with one would be like.

The reason I got the 1D4 was because of its speed and reach (1.3x crop), which is good for both sports and birds. Imagine a 300mm f2.8 would equal a 390mm f2.8 withtout any converts and factor in the price of a 400mm f2.8 and its weight. While the 1Dx would be faster, to get the same reach would mean a tremendous strain on finances and a huge increase in weight. If the 1Dx came out earlier and at a more down to earth price, the result could be different today.

Of course there are drawbacks - the 1D4 v 1Dx: slower fps, not as good color, digic 5 vs digic 4, better focusing system, better low noise at high ISO (1D4 is about eql to 5D2), but on the whole, the 1D4 is a pretty damn good cam. Shooting with the 50L/85 it makes a great portrait cam. Focus acquisition is lightning fast. And with the 1.3x and 16.1mp, if you are going to take birds or bugs, that is equal to higher resolution per pixel. Its a different perspective from FF, which for a photographer is a good thing - the difference opens different angles/perspectives. Oh and I DO like the sound it makes when the 10fps goes off...lol

Do bros here use clear filter or uv filter or none at all for this len ?

Thank you.

can the bros who own this lens roughly estimate what's the effective number of stops of vc based on your experience under normal circumstances :)

I would say approximately 2-3 stops. Tamron states it's 4 stops but I think that's a little optimistic.

Can I say "B+W MRC slim UV".

By the way, how much is this 24-70mm VC len cost now ?

Thanks.

Call the shops, ask the shops. Problem solved, question answered.

Realistically, this would be very hard to estimate and whatever reply you get will be a guess.
To test the theory, one would have to say shoot at 70mm.
So in theory, a setting of 1/80s or 1/90s would be required for no blur and a 4 stop VC advantage is like shooting at 1/45 (1stop), 1/20 (2stop), 1/10s (3stop), 1/5s (4stop), to test this theory.

But then here's the thing: each person's ability to hand hold and shoot is different. So then there's the other variable of a person's ability which makes this exercise pointless. The only way to get around this is to either use a machine and test, or get enough people with this lens and get their response and average the result.

Practically, what I can say is that the VC works. I've shot at 1/8s and gotten sharp results (2stops), but I've not tested it further than that. All this question of how many stops...too theoretical, just go and shoot and enjoy the lens, bring back nice memories.

Got it from alan photo few days ago .. I must say i am impress with it .. Much cheaper than nikon version and perform quite good.

Thought I'd share this. I've just been to HK and checked this lens. quoted price is 8850 hkd, more or less S$1.4k. Shop name is Tin Cheung in TST. Darn sharp and heavy, will not balance on my d300s unless theres a battery grip.
