ah..i see...so there is a way to vary the aperture afterall!
Thanks for the clarification...:)

Yeah, the adapter works with lenses w/ non-fixed aperture too. But for this lens, it doesn't change anything if you shift the aperture ring, if you can ;)

The aperture can't be changed on a mirror lens. I own a Tamron 500mm f8 too.

Pentax does have a mirror lens w/ variable aperture, see my post above ;)

The aperture ring is part of the removable lens mount (Adaptall) and can only be rotated when attached to non-mirror lens.

Mine besides a 50mm lens.

Yours is the first version, which comes with a tripod mount. Mine is the second version which doesn't have a tripod collar. Well, for a lens this size and weight, we might not need a tripod collar at all :D

Here are some detailed info about these two lenses:
Model 55B (1979-1983) - http://www.adaptall-2.com/lenses/55B.html
Model 55BB (1983-2006) - http://www.adaptall-2.com/lenses/55BB.html

It's a tiny lens for a 500mm, isn't it :)

For SLR, only Minolta or Sony 500mm f/8 is autofocus.

That's right. A maximum aperture f8 lens usually does not transmit enough light for AF to work, that's why it's not easy or practical to make :)

Very nice, and I can see your moon is bigger than mine ;) Actually if the photos are 100% crops from the original ones, they are very good. But if they are resized ones, I can't tell w/o knowing your PPing method ...

Hi FW
Usual lazy me...just cropped the jpgs...no processing.
For the raw image, I pushed the exposure up a little as noise was obvious in the raw and a little sharpening...nothing that significant. :)

You want donuts? Here are some :)

Hi
This is a desired effect or a problem? The donuts seem very distracting. I would have thought bokeh is best when the background is blurred beyond recognition?
Cheers

It is up to you lah....some problems can be turned into interesting effects. Good or bad depends on the photog and the viewer.

It is a characteristic of a mirror lens. Whether it is desired or whether it is a problem is up to the photographer.

Indeed. Its up to one own self.

Like in the following photos both taken with Tamron SP500: the first one has beautiful donut bokeh of the waterfall background; the 2nd photo has cream-smooth backdrop instead. And both are perfect for me.

Hi guys,

I just joined today after searching for some mirror lens.

Does anyone know I can still get one for my Canon 30D ? BTW, I'm from Malaysia...:)

So far my choice are Tamron SP 500mm f/8 and Sigma 600mm f/8.

I believe the one from Sigma is for EF mount. which mean no converter is needed. However both lenses are quite difficult to find at Malaysia except at ebay.... anyone know where can I get those in singapore ?

Thanks.
