IMHO, of all the 3rd party lenses, Tokina makes the best, with the best builds.

I will say each as it's strength ba... Tokina in build, sigma in AF speed and tamron in campactness of lens....

Not to mention Sigma's whole arsenal of sick telezooms.
50-500mm F4-6.3, 80-400mm F4.5-5.6, 100-300mm F4, 120-300mm F2.8, 135-400mm F4.5-5.6, 170-500mm F5-6.3, 300-800mm F5.6, 200-500 f/2.8

Sick.

No wonder i always get a feeling that both tokina and nikon lenses have similar build... Even their 'lens plate' (the gold words with the lens name) look similar...

Their rubber grip for focusing, the direction of focus also. The rest of the lenses are all reversed.

That is why I like Tokina ;p

Btw, the Nikon 28-200mm zoom ring IS reversed. One of the rare ones I've seen.

OK I got some pictures taken with Nikon 17-55mm vs Tamron 17-50mm. Its in my laptop. I will try to post it later or if not tomorrow bcos I tried photobucket and it seems laggy now.

Take good care of the ATX lens coating. Don't use harsh chemical and worthless tissue. It is probably the best lens coating formulation used by any third party lenses manufacturer.

Oh is it? Strange.. Might be a design by some other 3rd party manufacturer.. Tamron comes to my mind. ;p

 Now you mention it, the 28-200 is darn small too... tamron and sigma "sized" :bsmilie:

But IQ is on par with 18-70. But since I am using the centre of the image circle... (28-200 is FX, not DX).. I wonder then.

btw, have you decided on which lens, just curious.

:bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

That's a very good questions after so many people has replied.

No. Because for "cheapo" me, I have learnt how to adopt to shooting in low light, with a relatively slow lens (Max f/5.6 but no f/6.3 Sigmas pls :bsmilie:). So I'm in no hurry to get either lens.

When I am fully decided, then I will buy. And who knows, I may just decide to take another slow lens like the 18-200mm (which has been tempting me). Lens speed has never really been a limiting factor for me. Of course, my telephotos give more problem though.

Are you referring to image quality?
I don't mind spending. J ust that I don't want to spend $150% more for the Nikon, just to find it is 5% better.

To saxon: Tamron 17-50, is not the same IQ as the Sigma 18-50 as far as I know. The Sigma is worse.

Chanjyj...this is what we mean by personal mileage..I used the Sigma 18-50 and it is quite good too (was actually waiting for the Tamron by Sam from J3:16 recommended the Sigma to me) and IMHO is around the same with the Tamron in terms of picture quality but I like the sigma build quality (my fingers lah...hahaha).

Ultimately, can the client see the huge difference when the 'huge' to us photographers may be really small to the layman? So going by value for money, Tamron/Sigma is around 95% of what the Nikon can do and it is good enough for most uses.

My 2 cents

Ben: nobody want to buy your 17-55 lah  it is "well-loved". a true workhorse lens for a working full-time pro :bsmilie:

I loved the 17-55 when I still had my nikons. It was almost never unmounted from the main body  My wife loved it too. And forced me to give it to her. Hahah. Before it was eventually sold to a bro here.

Photos?
Maybe don't tell us here which photos from which lens, let us guess/judge.

That would be good.

I knew my Tamron 28-75/2.8 had a pic IQ that was quite different from the nikkor 17-55. Wonder if it would be the same case with the new 17-50. Hmm.

has anybody used both the Tamron 17-50mm and Nikkor 18-200mm VR? How if we compare Tamron 17-50mm with this Nikkor 18-200mm instead of the much more expensive Nikkor 17-55mm?

What kind of comparison do you want? Both are different animals. :bsmilie:
