If someone could provide a Nikon and Tamron IQ and price comparison using index like below would be good. I am providing below as an example, not the real index between the two....

Thanks.

all i can say is, it is pointless... $ you may compare, but image quality? you definitely not getting 3.5x the image quality from 3.5x the $... and further more how do you even give index for image quality? there so many factor including sharpness, distortion, color, CA, vignette... etc, beside that there are also factor like focusing speed, accuracy, build, many many more.

Does Tamron 17-55mm able to AF on D40/x? thanks

has anybody used both the Tamron 17-50mm and Nikkor 18-200mm VR? How if we compare Tamron 17-50mm with this Nikkor 18-200mm instead of the much more expensive Nikkor 17-55mm?

yes i have used both. i own the tamron and recently during a xmas party i shot with a friends d80 using the 18-200 vr.

comparison ah? well first thing of course is flexibility. the range of the 18-200 of course is a plus. this means you dont have to change lense. the only irritating thing i dont like is the lense creep. which happens when u point downwards with the Vr on.

I didnt get a chance to really test the VR in action but honestly to me, i dont see a reason to pay more for it because i shoot with flash. furthurmore one can compensate for higher shutter speeds with the aperture seeing that the 18-200 has a max of 3.5 at wide and 4.5 at tele.

okay sharpness wise. im not usually very paricular person. But weirdly enough, i wondered why the pictures turned out different. a little soft. (btw we both use d80 and shoot with sb600) even with the same settings, the pictures turned out different as in less sharp and also the colour wise a little different.

so personally i do prefer the tamron. in my opinion its a good buy. But then again different photographers have different priorities, some can live with having to change lenses some are more particular about sharpness. btm line u must ask yourself what you are using it for and what are your priorities.

I have previously owned a 17-55 F2.8 (Tamron) and currently uses the 18-200VR.

The 18-200vr is good for shooting in bright conditions at the far end of the zoom which the vr help a great deal. What irritates me the most is the lens creep. If you have a low light situation, the shutter speed drops and the focusing will take longer. While the VR helps compensate for the lower shutter speed, I would prefer it to be able to FREEZE action instead. In that way, I really miss the 17-55 F2.8

My conclusion:
If you prefer fast focusing and freezing of actions -> 17-55/F2.8
If you prefer a "do all" lens and like to do lots of zoom -> 18-200vr

...

thanks. i think i also prefer tamron 17-50. got another long zoom lens 80-200 already. as for the trouble of lens changing, maybe can buy a second hand back up body? hehe.;)

I tried tamron during a casual event last week, all i can say it's focusing speed is nowwhere near nikon 17-55, especially low light environment. If speed is what u go for (earn a living with ur equipment), then go for nikon.

Image quality really depend on your personal taste, my friend like tamron's color & contrast while i cannot stand it. It's really a personal choice.

ohh of course the nikkor should focus faster and have better images it cost blardy 4 times. the tamron. hahaha. thats lense its a...when i can afford it i will get it lense.

essentially my stance is, at the moment, if one has to work within a budget i would say this is a pretty darn good deal.

one last thing, the nikkor will of course weigh like a tonne of bricks...haha how heavy is it ah? ( but i mean...thats what i love about nikon...damn solid build)

For sure the Nikon would focus faster... it has a SWM inside... it's a AFS lens...

I think the closest for what you are asking for is comparing the results of the tests from the following web site:

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/tamron_1750_28/index.htm

Nikon AFS 17-55mm f/2.8
http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nikkor_1755_28/index.htm

waste of time to compare. willing to spend $2xxx, buy the nikon. If not so willing, get the tamron. simple and straight forward.
If not willing to spend that much on 1 lens, even if nikon is 4x better than the tamron, you still won't buy it.

some other people have the habit of wanting the best. even if that nikon lens is only 10% better than the tamron, he/she will still get the nikon at more than 4 times the price.

sound argument? :P

I think the best comparison between the Nikkor and the Tamron is price.

With the huge price difference, it is not feasible to compare anything else.

Among the post I have read so far, yours is really really straight and concise to the point.

Cheers all.

It is really amazing how a Toyota VIOS can be compared to a Nissan Cefiro.

Of course the Cefiro is going to bring you to your destination in greater comfort then your Vios, seeing that you paid so much more for the Cefiro, even though both bring you from points A to B.

If the price difference is like, $100, then by all means compare things like IQ and stuff but we talking about a price difference of about 4 times here.

The best option would be to buy the Tamron in the meantime to get the job done, and then later on if the need to get a better lens arises, buy the Nikon.
