Tamron 17-50mm, Nikon 17-55mm

This is not a question about which is the better lens. I think we are all in agreement that the Nikon is better. Question is how much better...

Again, my subjective opinion is that if you don't always view your images at 100%, or make poster prints, then the Tamron is good enough -- good value for money.

Dear All,
If i have S$2000, i will not get the Nikon 17-55mm lens. Be practical, i could just add a liittle more to get the much much more impressive 70-200mm VR lens.

I own the tamron and it consistently produces excellent results. Yes, we can all argue that nikon makes much better lens in terms of build and lens coating and blah blah blah... But the truth is, how many of us really blow it up to AO size posters to look into detail as to how sharp your picture is?

I have used both lens. They are both very fast, sharp and very responsive. But to be practical, i won't spend that much on a stock lens. I would spend that money on a telephoto lens. It is not how much u spend on the lens, it is how skillful and quick in taking great pictures at difficult lightings and timings. Even i am fumbling with this.

All professionals will tell you that they can too take a great pic with tamron lens and with a nikon D40 or D80 body. So, bottom line is, if ur pocket is deep enough, get the nikon lens. If not, dun even go near that lens. Tamron is just as fantantic!!

Dun you agree?;)

Right, right, right... :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: ;)

In case anyone is curious (since I am the thread starter), I have got the Nikon after much deliberation.

While I consistenly exalt the policy of spend less get more, this one situation where I would say that the Nikon has an edge over the Tamron, even keeping into account price differences. (Pease don't ask me to explain, I have no energy to explain the millions of thought processes)

And yes, I took a darn long time to decide. Ask me why I took so long? Because my 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 worked just fine as my workhorse in the interim. Now it is regelated to backup role (and I wont hesitate to use it).

Congrtulations on a great decision...
I suggest u sell the 18-55, i bet u won't be needing it anymore..:bsmilie:

18-55 probably worth 90 bucks only. keep it and use it for IR photography!

For sure the Nikon would focus faster... it has a SWM inside... it's a AFS lens...

well, if u wait a while more, we will soon see the tammy 17-50 with its built in focussing motor, so should focus just as fast......

I got my 17-55mm len less than one month ago and I never look back although it still hurts my pocket. It is extremely solid in terms of look and feel in addition to picture sharpness and fast performance - that is why it is expensive. After using this superior len, when you mount other consumer lens - you will notice the differences in terms of handling and the feel especially if this is important factor to consider. Well again, at the end of the day is still depending on your budget (how much you are willing to stretch) and that will drive the purchasing behaviour.

Nada. 18-55mm is a sharp lens that I like. (Having a pile of lenses, it was the toughest call on whether to stick with the 18-55 or my 18-70 or my 18-200). I liked the build of the 18-70 most (yes, I can be weird), like the extensive range to the 18-200mm and it's VR, and like the sharpness of the 18-55mm most.

The 18-55mm stuck on my lens for the longest period of time (after the 18-70 and 18-200 which tie for second place).

I anticipate I will still be using the 18-55 for certain stuff i.e. reverse mount.

Don't have time for IR.. from what I figure, aquiring focus and long exposre times will give me a headache - most of my free photography time is spent guiding and teaching my assistant photographer *sigh*

Aiyoh.. pls lah. I don't know how many events I have taken with Mr. el terrible. One of the events I shot was for a major, high class camera company that produces "legendary glass" (go figure :P) themselves.. so..... not so el terrible eh.
