Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC

sorry but VC means what? is tamron 17-50 can match up to oly ziuko 14-54? which lens is the better one?
thanks:dunno:

VC = Vibration Compensation
definitely tamron 17-50 if u ask me

thanks... now i have to think which one to buy, tamron 17-50 or oly zuiko 14-54...

Lol, spent the last 2 hours reading and reading about this 17-50 VC vs non VC and vs 17-55 until eyes bleed liaoz. But still cannot find any conclusive discussion about AF comparison and capabilities.

A bit of hint that the 17-50, when compared to 17-55, has a tendency to "hunt" in low-light conditions but nothing much discussed on that. Also that the 17-55 locks focus faster than the 17-50. Are both these statements true? Problem is, these 2 are actually pretty much going to help me decide which to get.

Anyone knows?

After having used the 17-50mm non-vc intensively for 6wks, yes the 17-50 does hunt slightly in poorly-lit, non-contrasty conditions. The AF locks on instantaneously during daytime and sunrise/sunset conditions....WAY faster than the EF-S 18-55mm

The hunt that occurs doesn't last more than half a second. Its not an issue for me as i spend even more time after half-depressing the shutter release button checking whether my camera is slightly tilted or not before i fully depress the shutter release button

Many thanks! The info I needed. If it hunts in low light then I might lean more to the 17-55. Cheers!

Wow, surprised to see that this thread has grown this much since I first started it.

Update: I sold my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC to facilitate a switch to a Nikon system. Didn't get the Nikon equivalent as I went for a FF body. That being said, I miss the build, VC and pleasant colors of this lens

Haha, when u sold it? I dont see any for sale thread about this lens s the trading place?

hey guys..

am deciding between the non-VC and VC versions but still can't decide haha.

anyway, i went to check out prices at The Camera Workshop at penin and Cathay Photo.. i can't rem the exact prices cos I'm horrid with numbers but compared to the price guide here, the Cathay Photo prices were similar.

for TCW, it was abt 200 bucks cheaper for both versions.. i've never come across lens price difference btw shops tt is so much before, so was wondering if it's normal? haha

As i'm on a tight budget and plonking more than 500 bucks for a lense is a no no for now, i got myself what i think is a good deal from bns.

Dealt for a Tamron 17-50 non VC, and with a couple of hundred pix taken, i gotta say i'm loving it.

I would not think there will be noticeable diff on output for VC and non VC, but personally, what i have now works for me :0 certainly a big upgrade from my kit lens. I'll try to post some pix if i finally figure out how to post photos here. Newbie la.

Haha. I am in the same situation but I am leaned more towards 17-50mm for the price and also because of my filters for 72mm tread.

Hello, I just bought a 17-50 VC and during VC mode, when I look through the viewfinder, the image jerks a bit before autofocus kicks in. This does not happen in non-VC mode.

The AF does not seem to have any issues (as of now). The shop guy told me that it is part of the normal mechanism of Tamron VC. Can somebody verify this?

No issues

Thank you. Realized the lens manual states that also. =)

U already got the lens?
Most probably TCW is a grey set which warranty covered by shop.
i.e. Any problem, shop will rectify for u. So Tamron service center will not cover the warranty.
Local set usually with 3 yrs warranty covered by Jelcorp.

oh.. nope haven't got it yet.
what exactly is a grey set? i read what it meant awhile ago but i forgot =X
so would it be advisable to get a grey set by TCW? not sure if it's better to have the warranty covered by tamron itself hehe. thanks!

If u ask me, i would rather spend $100+ more for 3yrs warranty covered by local agent.
Note that usually servicing for Tamron is NOT done at S'pore if i m not wrong.
They will send the lens to Tamron Japan for repair. So it will take about 1 or 2 mths before u get back your lens. Not sure if grey set will be sent to Japan or the shop DIY themselves.

Btw, i would recommend the non-VC type. Though VC will be useful in certain circumstances, i find it difficult for me to justify the additional $200 to $300.
The choice is yours ;)

heh yea i don't think i will get the VC version.. so ex! and so much heavier. haha
mm yea actually when i went to TCW i was abit annoyed cos i asked to see the d90 so that i can see if i like it, and the guy said no display set and if i want to buy then he'll open one for me to see.. meh. :(
