get the 17-55.. u wont regret it... this lens made me regret going FF for a while:)

I second this. I bought the Tamron new because i love the range and intended to use it for a walk about lens. Reason why i did not buy from BnS is because the Tamron has quality control issues and the only place to ensure u have a sharp copy is in the camera shops where they have a few samples to choose from. And trust me, u can really tell one copy apart from the other. In BnS, u have no comparison. Moreover the price difference is minimal in my opinion.
Bought mine from orient. Great service there.

However, i sold the lens at a loss in less than 2 weeks because i found it very lacking in taking indoor photos and it worked very funny with my SB400 flash. And like the TS, i read tons of comparisons between nikkon and Tamron and decided to buy the 17-55 from BnS. And wala, it really does better indoors. I also prefer the color rendition of the nikkor lens. And if you have the habit of reviewing your pics by magnifying more than 4 times(presses) on your camera LCD, you can see that nikkor is superior in sharpness(overall).

IMHO, i think that Nikkor 17-55 is definitely worth the price(at least from BnS perspective. Only about $1500 compared to 600 plus for a new Tamron). A lot of guys have very well taken care nikkor for sale when they upgrade to FF.

If you have a Tamron, i suggest you don ever..ever try a nikon 17-55. Because your love for the Tamron will be killed on the spot.

Hope you find the lens you love. cheers!

I've tried the Nikon 17-55, and I still love the Tamron. Because I know I saved 1k+ by sacrificing very a minimal difference in IQ and sharpness (very minute IMHO). There are situations where the 17-55 react better, esp when using with a flash, but those quirks I can easily get around with my settings.

1k+ can go towards another nice lens. like the Tokina 116. Or towards baby diapers, or stuff to make my CFO happy.

i tested both lenses and the tamron is slightly sharper then the nikkor.. color-wise the nikkor is more contrast. But the tamron doesnt loose out much. Price is cheaper and weight is so much lighter. Maybe i got a super good copy :bsmilie:

I wonder how you guys determine if its a sharp copy when testing at the shop?

Bring a focus test chart. Or shoot words in the newspaper. Or take pics of the sales person :D

If at orient, they have this wooden figurine you can use:bsmilie:

That's true too. For me, i think it is because of the indoor shooting requirement that first sparked the decision to go for 17-55. Anyway, i am sure that Tamron is suffice for most situations. Tokina 11-16 is on my list too.

Possibly! And it is true that it is a lot lighter. But i think weight should not be much of an issue after some getting use to. Maybe i got strong arms and a very sturdy neck:bsmilie:. Anyway, i sling my strap sideways instead of the regular over the neck position. Reason for that is so that i can easily swing it behind me when i need to carry my toddler without the camera dangling in front and risk hitting his head with it. I find that this method relieves stress on the neck too.

does anyone know whether there will be good deals for this lens at the upcoming comex?

i'm thinking of getting the tamron (nikon mount with motor), but i heard that the focus motor will give out a high pitch buzz.

Just to cheak you guys, when will you hear the high pitch buzz? during AF operation or once you turn on the cam.

Thanks! :)

I haven't heard any weird sounds coming outta mine though. why not try out at any shops and let the BBB virus kick in :D

yeah, will drop by probably next week. Need a fast lens for quiet environment, using it in theater. That why, i'm concern about the high pitch buzz.

Some shops will offer 1-to-1 exchange within a week if there really is a problem with the lens.
You can test it out at shops, then ask whether can bring back for exchange if there is any issue.
Of cos, go to reputable shops for your purchase.
