Switching to sony A7 (from m4/3)

IMHO, the RX10 is very very niche
You might be right. Only the laziest or clumsiest photographers who shoots with just one zoom lens the whole day would be interested in the RX10.
Or worse, the ignorant ones who are willing sacrifice 0.3" in sensor size just to save two thousand dollars instead of getting a decent
GH3 + 12-35mmf2.8 + 35-100mm f2.8 combo.

Which is weather sealed and has silent electronic shutter and also shoot All- intra @ 72mb/s. Yep. Very different and totally worth the 2k :) only folks who know about the gems in gh3 will understand. Not for noobs who only look at paper spec.

The spec don't do the actual shooting experience justice. lets just say that I can shoot over 2 1/2 hrs of video without issues. : )

That escalated quickly ;)

There's a lot of excitement about the Sony but I'll wait for more reviews and samples. There's too much info around but mind sharing how much is the RRP for A7r with the FE24-70/4 ? Thank u.

Well much as i love my ep5, the dof is just not shallow enough. And (shame on me) mentally the small-ish size of the m43 sensor is a psychological issue for me.

I believe the number being bandied about is in the high $3k region.

My current ep5 setup is already in excess of $3k....

Surprised no one has complained that a Sony topic is being discussed in m43 forum....

That's one thing I like about m4/3 users. More objective than complaining.

Wow 2k is alot bro... can buy at least 2 more decent P&S.. lol

After using the Nex 5T and the GF5, I have to say that IQ in low light is way better in the NEX. Towards that end, I am interested in the A7 especially since the body size is comparable to EM5. However, I am sure the lenses will be large. My option with the NEX5T was to use it only with the 16 mm pancake and the pancake zoom. I think the key to getting the A7 is to pair it with a reasonable compact lens. That will mean that it is not ever going to be a comprehensive system for me. But, if I am only using it to shoot my family, I think I can live with a restricted lens range.

For m4/3 the best low light dxo scores are the sony sensors used in the EM5, EP5 EPL5 EM2 GH3. The gf6 is using a tweaked gh2 sensor.

unless u willing to go manual, there's a quite alot out there that's small. though small may not be cheap...

Thanks, so the GX7 can do continuous recording beyond 29 mins.

Can the OMD E-M1 do that too ? If cannot, then for me, my choice of GX7 vs E-M1 is easier to make/decide :bsmilie:

Thanks

Dunno.. my EPL5 cannot.. and if I remember correctly, the EM5 i was shooting with the other time also cannot.. so i guess that the EM1 also "cannot".. lol.. this is purely my speculation.. so please no one flame me ok..

Hahaha ... my guess is also the E-M1 cannot.

But the last thing to consider is that, if I remember correctly I read somewhere (but dunno where) that the GX7 stabilizer does not work on video, is that correct ? And E-M1 stabilizser works on both stills and video. Is that correct ?

Thanks

Yes.. the IBIS of GX7 doesnt work during video : ( Several noted reviewers like luminous landscapes pointed this out. : ( EM5 and EM1 has 5 axis stabilization during video... very cool if you dont have a rig and want that "steady cam" effect.. To me this isnt a big deal as I ususally carry a monopod along for even a 5 min shoot..

Hmmm ... now new dimension to consider ... is the EM5 gonna be much cheaper than the EM1 ? if yes then worth considering ... buy when the E-M1 arrived ... :)

honestly I was more or less set with the idea of buying a OMD EM1. Until I saw this thread and I took a look at the A7. I sold my FF recently to planning to go "light".

To be honest... the idea of a compact size body with a FF sensor is like a dream come true. But the fact that Oly MFT has a lot more then just the sensor size (use to own a EP1 previously and had the chance to own a OMD EM5 for a short while)... the quality of everything in my past personal opinion... is much better. the looks for the camera, the build, even right down to the filters. much more value packed in a MFT sensor body rather than just a FF as a point note worthy. Not stirring anything... Sony is a good brand... but doesn't appeal as a camera to me.

Though the thought of having it still lingering mainly... and I can quite safely say that solely for the FF sensor.... but anyone realized that Oly is like "Nikon" some years back when they have no FF? My own worry is... one day... after spending a bomb on the EM1... Oly decided to do a mirrorless FF... and the best part is... most likely the MFT lenses is not reusable.... don't know to be happy or sad.

Bro.. you can buy EM5 from BnS... going v cheap now.. but if you are seriously looking to shoot video, my 2 cents is that although the 5 axis is very good for video, olympus's video codec cannot make it.. really.. especially in lower light.. you should try it out in the shop or borrow or rent to try first.. i had high hopes for the Em5 to be able to shoot adequate video so i borrowed then i rented for 1 whole weekend to try.. decided to go back to GH3..

I just read the specs Keith posted on for the EM5, i think for video purpose, the EM5 cannot make it for me bcos it cannot do 50p. Maybe a EP5 ? U see, I have this funny urge of wanting to own both Oly & Panny. Since I already have a GH3, I thought maybe should get a Oly for its stabilizer function for my video recording ... do I make sense ? :)
