Swede Stockholm

14. Ubiquitous Cyclists

Stockholm has a strong cycling culture. Cyclists are a common sight all over the city. In fact, bicycle rental shops are easily found. You will find people dressed in work clothes on bicycles. This picture was taken on a Monday morning, with people making their way to work.

15. Untitled

Simply another B&W building shot. The building in the picture is the Radisson Blu Strand Hotel.

16. Untitled

Another picture of bicycles, this time parked.

17. Off for an Excursion

Saw this group of pre-schoolers waiting for the public bus or tram. The teacher is perhaps bringing them for an excursion. What I found interesting was that the young children here basically wear brightly colored reflective vests (sorry, not as visible in B&W) when they move around the city with the teachers or day care givers.

I walked across to the opposite site of the street, mounted by telephoto, and captured the moment. The lady on the right was a bonus!

18. Storm Approaching

A typical waterfront scene in Stockholm, this one from Gamla Stan. With dark clouds looming in the background, a moment of sunlight provided some respite.

19. Untitled

Found the repeating pattern and bricks with varying tones on the wall of Nordiska Museet (see 13) interesting. You can see the actual colors of the wall in 8.

20. Onwards

Statue of King Karl X Gustav riding his steed, in front of the Nordiska Museet (see 13).

Nice series but tone down on the vignette.

Nice series but tone down on the vignette.

Thanks Xiao_shin for your comments. As for the vignetting, are you specifically referring to 13, 15 and 20? For personal reasons, I somehow prefer the effect, perhaps overdoing it somewhat for certain photos.

It'll be great to hear from others if they find the vignetting overdone. Greatly appreciate any comments :)

21. Reserved

Reserved parking lots are a plenty in Singapore, but this is new! I suppose "big-shots" in the organization also commute on bicycles  Photo taken outside Nordiska Museet.

23. Spiral

This spiral staircase is found in Hotel Nobis, the hotel I put up during my stay there. It is a boutique hotel and the interior is furnished with the famous scandinavian design.

24. Gallery

This photo was taken at Fotografiska Museet, a photo gallery located in the island of Sodermalm, walking distance from Gamla Stan. The effect in the photo is as it is i.e. not post processed. I exposed for spotlight shining on the photographs and waited for someone to view them. They have exhibits that will never make it to Singapore due to.. ahem... mature content. Do you think this photo will look better in B&W?

25. Gallery II

Another take of a similar photo. Which one do you prefer compositionally, and why if possible :)

i prefer #24 for some reason! haha. i know the rule of thirds, but #24 still works for me!

anw, stockholm looks like a nice place, i'll be stopping there next year :)

Thanks shawn207 for commenting. I share the same sentiments as you. After I took 24, I thought a person placed on the last third will be compositionally more appealing, which led me to take 25. However, after reviewing both, I still found 24 somewhat better balanced. I suspect it has to do with the positioning of the person within the area of the spotlights. In 25, the person is too close to the edge of lighted area.

Stockholm is indeed a nice city to visit, albeit expensive. Everything here is generally clean and orderly (sounds like Singapore). Better to visit during summer. How many days will you be there?

26. Shadow Play

Saw these shadows casted by symbols pasted on a sliding glass door at Fotografiska Museet.

#24 gives me more of a sense of depth, so I prefer that. I'm a noob, and don't really have the eye to take streetscapes - but your shots are wonderful. Amazing series! Thanks for sharing...

oh i will be on student exchange in milan, italy, so i have more or less decided to go to stockholm and sweden for a short trip. :) i would say possibly a week there? but i'll be visiting in february so i think it will be really cold :/

anyway, did you go see the northern lights when you were there? i'm not sure if sweden or norway would be a better place to catch the northern lights from!

btw #23 is a nice shot also!

That makes it 3 votes for 24 :) Thanks for dropping in.

Nope... didn't get to see the northern lights as I was only in Stockholm. You probably need to go further north to see them. It's a good time for northern lights as we are reaching solar maximus, where the sun's solar flare is at its peak. One week in Stockholm is actually quite long, unless you just want to see the place in a really slow pace, and plan to visit many museums (like I did). Furthermore, it'll be really cold in Feb, but at least you'll get to see a snow covered Stockholm.

27. Passion

Young people express their passion liberally. This photo is taken at Gamla Stan. Noticed this couple smooching from afar. Stayed at a distance and mounted my 70-200 to capture the moment, without being noticed.

28. Out on a Stroll with Mum

It is quite a common sight to see parents bringing their young ones out in prams and strollers. You can find men pushing their babies and toddlers together without their womenfolk.
