Good morning everyone! :)

Wah.. so much discussion over Adrian's pics.
Actually hor, I think the curvy ones are ACCURATE. hehe
The fireworks are basically red-hot pyrotechnic particles blasted into the air. The curvy paths are them tumbling to the ground. Sorta between a feather and a ball, if you know what I mean. So...I think it's your friend's camera that has smoothened the lines too much. Maybe the JPEG output too aggressive?
hehehe that's what I think anyway.

Nt as good as the rest lar.. i do share u know... but nt as high profile like DD123/ZCA or the rest lar. ..:sweat::sweat:
Me? High profile? No la... I don't have 10k+ post count leh. Hehehe

?I am shooting RAW from another angle but i am getting relatively straight lines.

your lens not sharp enough? :)
I somehow still (stubbornly) believe that the curvy "flight path" is accurate. It's the intense glow and the ALMOST straight flight that makes it look straight.

If you look at Adrian's pics from wide out, they look like straight lines as well.

It's possible i am using manual focus. Wonder if he is doing AF?:think:

It can be many things.

One thing could be vibrations from people walking around/cars driving past/bass from music. All these things can introduce vibrations to your tripod. If your tripod is not able to damp enough of those vibrations, you will get minute shakes. These minute vibrations will not make too much of a difference to the buildings, since they are exposed for so long. But for streaks of light you will see them clearly.

Another thing could be vibrations from wind, or wind blowing your strap, and or your strap is swinging around. When on a tripod, make sure you wind it up over something so that it does not swing freely. If you have an optech pro loop strap, remove the main straps.

It could also be that your camera setup is too light. The more mass your ball head and your camera has, it actually improves stability. If your tripod comes with a hook, try to hook some weight below it. Hooking a freely swaying bag is not a good idea also. Best is if your bag is a heavy, and you use some bungee cords and hook to the tripod and the bag, but the bag is resting on the ground.

Also for portrait orientation shots, do you have your camera swung to one side of the ball head? It may be causing some instability there. Try an L-plate. It is more stable. Since even in portrait orientation, the centre of gravity of your camera setup still stays in the center of the center column.

Also check if your extended too much of your center column.

I would rule out VR, small aperture diffraction here. Since you are shooting at F8 and your lens do not have VR.

I think I covered all I can think of...

Do you still have the raw files? Are you having any filter attached? What lens are you using? What are the equipment differences other than camera body?:think::think:

Thanks for the indulging my curiosity guys :bsmilie::bsmilie:.

I still have the raw files, and it is also curvy there.
I was using D90, 17-55mm lens (shot at 17mm), manfrotto 055XPROB, f/8, MF, no filters.

My friend was using D300s, 17-55mm lens (shot at 17mm), sirui CF tripod (can't remember the exact model), f/11, dunno AF/MF, UV filter. Have to check with my friend whether he's shooting in raw or jpeg.

Since we're using the same lens, i think can't exclude that possibility.

i know... :D

never use this

For sure your tripod is not the cost of such problem since the building is sharp. How was your focusing done? Any difference?

:sweat:Build Firewall, install Antivirus, Take Antibiotics:ipuke:

Resistance is FUTILE! ZCA...tsk tsk tsk.. notti notti! :nono: :bsmilie:

C'mon!... no point complaining when the weakness will always be the equipment holding the DSLR!

ZCA, once you have D700... it's time to upgrade to M20 ballhead... Muah-ah-ah-ah-ah!

I think DD123's reasoning of the shake may sound plausible.

Gotcha. Kekeke.
Hush, go back to bed :sticktong J/k j/k Still saving up for my UWA lens, so no choice have to tilt up to get the fireworks and the CBD to anchor the pic.

No la. 055xprob is super stable one. I am thinking might be the ball head? must really see. I will see Adrian's setup Saturday morning... and try to see what might be the problem.

Second to that, i am using a similar tripod setup for that shoot (055CXPRO3 + 488RC2). And of course with my bag as a counter weight.
