[SunChasersSG] Newbies Outing (Part 22) - Sunrise @ The Promontory (Photo)

Have you uploaded your images on sites such as "flicker", etc, yet? They need to be on the internet already before you can post them here...

If you have already uploaded, click on the yellow icon (third from the right) when you post your message, and then copy a link to your image into the box given.

The complete code for the image should look like this:
remove the asterixes above for the code to work...

Thank you Bro, I probably need to read up on Flickr first. Will try to post some of my maiden sunrise shot tonight. Thank you again.

i am noticing a lot of compositions at the same moment as this one by jacobs:

making the same choice to give an extremely unbalanced image. granted, the sky is very interesting, but it is definitely less "heavy" than the key elements here, i.e. the IR + pomelo.

wah, bitez, must tone down the exposure for the lotus lei, if u using lightroom ask DD he knows more, if ACR than use the feather option to tone down exposure for that particular area... thats how i do it..

did u set ya tripod properly..?? if not than ya spirit level is off, well just adjust in PS lah...:)

Thanks for the tip akerue! I tried feathering the lotus to lower exposure, got it but not very smooth hehe.. I did align the spirit level properly.. Guess I need to slant it abit to make it more visually appealing..

====

You stopped down and used base ISO...
no newbie 'mistake'
Looks like a case of lack of stability of support system... It was rather windy this morning. In such situation, you need to observe if your camera system is being 'disturbed' by the wind. Can try applying weight to the hook under the center column.

The horizon is a false one, coz the right side is much closer to your camera than the left side. If your camera is not aligned parallel to the shoreline, this situation of 'horizontal perspective distortion' shows up. There really isn't a reliable reference for your level, so as Kit says "go by gut instinct" :D My instinct says that you can afford to tilt the image anti-clockwise to achieve a more pleasing level.

The lotus is too bright. It's what I would consider "blown highlights". Camera records it as white, and there is no detail. One way to reduce this problem is to apply the black card technique during the capture of the image. Can google for more info, or perhaps next outing I try my best to demo for you.

Thanks Zca.. Yes the wind was quite strong, if not for the senior beside me who told me to use delay shutter I think even more shaky.. Sure thing! Hope to learn more every outing :D

Sorry n86m, may I trouble you for a more detailed explanation?
I'm a bit confused about the "heavy" comments.

Think Compositional balance is what he's referring to :)

Basically key interesting elements for Jacobs pic is sky, MBS and Pomelo..

Imbalance placement tat is.. and not enuff "breathing space" between the left and the pomelo.. resulting in a slighting heavier composition shifting leftwards..

Remember Kit was talking abt tis all the time? ;)

WK, correct me if i m wrong bro..

actually, what i was talking about was that the main focus is still on the mbs + pomelo, i.e. they are heavy duty elements that catch attention much much more.

so doesn't matter if the sky is nice, it's still not nice enough to provide some form of balance to what is essentially a left-heavy composition.

that said, as what bryan says, there is not enough breathing space on the left of the picture.

if you MUST have the sky in, then perhaps giving a whole load more breathing space on the left would help in the sense that:

(1) MBS + pomelo at least still centred, giving some semblance of balance
(2) with the sky adding some amount of interest

then again, i'm not sure if your view from the promontory actually allows for space on the left, it may not be the case. if this is so, then i would just happily not bother about that sky.

Thanks Jacobs for the Outing and Kit for sharing his knowledge with us. Below is my humble shot for today. Any feedback is welcome. Thanks for viewing. :)

My pics are still in the memory card... LOL..

Yes... ND110/ND400 is the new fad.

Nice work peeps. I will try to get my pics up soon... if I find the time..

Yup! I was paying attention to Kit's explanation! hehehe

ok thanks for that! I get it now! :D
There's a BIT more space to the left of the 'pomelo' (I call it 'lotus'), but it's getting dangerously close to Ritz Carlton already. Probably One Fullerton or the old Customs House would provide a better vantage point.

Don't know if it's our fault or not...
Definitely not mine la... it's you guys with the big-a$$ Lee holders and slot-in filters!
Maybe next week we'll see a lot of people asking more about gearheads and PC-E lenses! :o

Yup! I was paying attention to Kit's explanation! hehehe

Okay, will Redo the shot again for fullfill the standard requirement..;)
