Spinning Fantasy



3 Image HDR/DRI with 14 image exposure for crane swivel light trails. Farrer Road, Singapore.

My aunt lives in there and I always liked how dynamic the area is. This is one of the few places where the traffic is continuous, making it good for light trail shooting.

Honestly, I didn't like the place at all. There wasn't anything interesting other than the light trails coming from the vehicles. So I thought long and hard about making this night scene interesting to look at. I mean, I'd like to give the audience some credit. So I tried other compositions but that didn't seem to help either.

Was about to pack my stuff when I noticed the swivelling lights coming from the tower cranes while they spin. And I thought to myself; what if I capture and make those into light trails caused by the swivelling cranes? So that's how the idea came into fruition.

The bad part is, it took me nearly 2 hours to shoot this alone. The cranes barely moved at all, and I was hungry and missed dinner. Well, I'd do anything just to make this shot complete.

Anyway yeah I wouldn't be surprised this would be just like any other condo but with a mild curvatured form. I shall admit I was expecting more of her design, but I can tell this isn't her style, or someone up there was controlling her final designs from fruition; this is probably her most conservative one. Seen Norman Foster's Supreme Court? The one with the flying saucer dome over a bunch of squared boxes, I thought that was another example. :think: When it was completed I was like... Erm, what?

Nice work on the cranes. I remembered another photographer (besides Chow Chee Yong) that shoots this sort of thing. Darren Soh (you may remember him as the guy that shot the "Political Landscapes" series a while ago).

Yeah a number of my photog friends also told me about these two awesome guys, I never knew about them until they saw the spinning cranes. hahahha Thanks man!! I have checked out their work and it's absolutely amazing.

Thanks for your enthusiasm!! But I gotta say, sorry but I ain't gonna do that. Not for a long while though, as I do not consider myself a veteran in photography. I believe I am still an average compared to alot of God-like masters out there, and not notable enough to teach.

If there's only one advice I could give, and that's just keep shooting.

Fast Food City

​

2 Image HDR/DRI 2 image panorama to relief right side spatial tightness. Bishan Park, Singapore.

A simple shot for a simple shooting joy after a hard day's work. Nothing much really, pretty much a random angle. Anyway I find this rather peculiar because parks encourage exercise, staying healthy and fit, and only to find a McDonald's joint with a bridge linking directly to it, really sends mixed messages if I may say.

Managed my time before the start of a busy day to shoot myself a simple sunrise there. I thought of tugging along my 70-200 lens that I rarely use for landscapes... So yeah, this is a simple pano-shot of the lit city during pre-dawn hours. Enjoy.

This is rather experimental shot to capture as much FOV elements as possible. I couldn't figure out a place to execute this idea none other than Telok Blangah I had in mind.

Dawn of the Day [Experimental]

​

2 Image HDR/DRI using GND 0.9 soft 8 image verto+panorama on left and right side to accommodate maximum visual spatiality. Telok Blangah Estates, Singapore.

This is an experimental attempt to include all visible elements into the scene from left to right as much as possible. Because of the rather constricted view from the corridor, I wasn't able to capture the entire scene from where the camera and tripod are positioned; the protruded walls of the building will be visible unfortunately.

Now to further simplify and explain my workflow here: first I setup my camera position on the extreme right of the corridor, to capture whatever visible elements on the *left* (the residential towers and the carpark, to create a more relieved visual space). 4 image vertorama shots were taken.

Next, I shifted my camera position to the extreme -left- of the corridor, this time to capture the elements that are visible on the *right* (the highway, the condominium, the other residential buildings and the carpark in this case) Another 4 image vertorama shots were taken.

Back home on post-processing, I joined the 4 images vertically from each side to create a vertorama. Since two different positions were taken, there were 2 vertoramas totalling 8 shots altogether. And the final process speaks for itself; I pano-merged the two vertorams from the two sides to produce this final image.

Ideally it'll look alot better if I cropped the two half-protruded buildings away, but I just wanted to show what is the maximum field of capture in this shot.

Saw a chair, together with the way the morning sun penetrates into these spaces. Thought I'd do a quick shoot.

Now I like to slow things down a bit, to express my very self... Because whenever there's light, I would come out of my melancholic shadow, and shoot away.

Was there late, but when I got out to the surface I saw the sky started to show a little tint of red... It's when I knew something magical is about to happen in a matter of seconds.

Wasting no time, I head onto the nearest high block I could find and this was the view.

Second shot of the amazing sky. I had more time to adjust my gear and portrait mode panorama suits best. Could've included more buildings from the west side but I was blocked by a big chunk of wall.

Trivia: After The Fire was a band in the 80s best known for playing Der Kommissar, featuring Falco.
