Inspired Like A Rock [Reprise]

2 Image HDR/DRI, 2 image panorama to relief visual balance using GND 0.9 soft + GND 0.6 soft for higher tonality of the skies. Bishan Park, Singapore.

A reprise shot that was taken sometime back, which I thought needs some reworking: Uninspired Like A Rock | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I also waited for the position of the sun to go down a little lower so that light falls nicely onto the rocks, creating highlights and casting shadows that gives a little bit of depth to the scene, leaving the rest of the park unlit caused by the blocking from the surrounding buildings of Bishan.

I left the lens flare effects as it is, I thought the effects were nice and not a tad too distracting, I think. The whole idea is about being inspired; a light shines upon me, because I am a lonely rock.

Wanted to explore more of the park to find more angles to play with, but I realised I had something else important to do for a friend. So I had to leave...

For a Better Tomorrow

2 Image HDR/DRI, 5 image light trail exposure + GND 0.9 soft for tonality of the sky. Pan Island Expressway, Singapore.

Initial plans were to create a 3 image panorama to show more elements on the right and left sides of the image, but after processing and comparison this single frame is much better.

Earlier on one evening I was in a car along this stretch of the PIE and saw a glimpse of evening sky from this direction. I figured I might be able to see the sunset from this overhead bridge.

To further confirm this, I looked at the Photographer's Ephemeris software that was recommended to me by Jon Chiang, aka Scintillation. This app can tell you the direction of where the sun is setting on the day you select. And yep, it tells me on January 26, this direction of the highway "points" to where the sun sets at! Amazing!

All along I had to use estimates and Google Earth for sunset direction. This app really saved me the time and hassle. Thanks buddy!

I highly recommend you guys to try it. The Photographer's Ephemeris can be downloaded for free and available for both Mac and Windows, however paid app for iOS and Android: The Photographer's Ephemeris

Hillside Dreams

2 Image HDR/DRI 4 image panorama with no filters. Telok Blangah Estates, Singapore.

Managed my time before the start of a busy day to shoot myself a simple sunrise there. I thought of tugging along my 70-200 lens that I rarely use for landscapes... So yeah, this is a simple pano-shot of the lit city during pre-dawn hours. Enjoy.

Best viewed when enlarged.

Hi LYHHH! This was taken at Telok Blangah BLK 80C.... It's a very distinctively tall HDB and you won't miss it. :) Go up to the 38th floor with your zoom lens and viola!

Well guys, the worst has happened. Guess I'm probably not shooting anything for the week or more. Whatever you do, take care of your tools. Don't let it end up like mine, despite rarely exposed to sea water.

Not I gotta think of a way to fork out money to fix this.

bro, i had similar problem too with my previous 7D. but mine was rain water trying to play punk.

i guess the PCB might be affected. maybe can just drop it at CSC and see if it is worth the cost to get it repaired.

else this is a good reason for an upgrade!

hope to see you back in action soon.

take care bro.

What happened to it? Got wet? Rain?

Thanks, but I do not have money to buy a new camera at the moment. ;p

Well I went to Canon just now, and thank goodness.... they found out the root of the problem and got it fixed. The DOF trigger located under the button is stuck, causing the camera to be unresponsive. The cause of this is due to corrosion making it stuck there. They also have a look around and found traces of rust and accumulated salts on certain areas including the lens mount. :dunno: The repair was free of charge and they will infamously remember it because of its horrid state it is in. The areas were salts and rust were accumulated were not replaced but only the DOF trigger as they are still -somehow- functioning.

For the love of my gears man, I dry them with a cloth each time whether wet or dry and sometimes place them in a dry cabinet when not in use for a long time. And I doubt leaving it exposed momentarily won't cause problems.

Whatever it is, it's working now. :)

However, for the popup flash, not so lucky. The Canon Reps told me that the popup flash might not work again caused by the corrosion if I were to attach an external flash unit on top of it. The cost is $300 to replace the entire popup flash head, but I'm not paying for that. There's a button I need to pry and depress using a screwdriver each time after I remove the external flash unit.

Congrats!!!!! Crisis adverted!!!

Waiting for more fabulous landscape photos :)

Wow that seems bad. I've gone through a few cameras a few years each with a reasonable rate of sea shooting but they never had such problems.

do you get splashed a lot?

I do use cotton buds to clean the lens mount about once a month, with alcohol. You can use the guardian isopropyl thing, it's cheap compared to eclipse solution which is meant for sensors. That might help to ward off the corrosion there. seawater is quite a pain for metal with prolonged contact.

I suppose your manfrotto has a fair bit of corrosion so you can imagine that happening inside the circuits, same thing. I can see where the lens mount might be called into question since the 10-22 you use isn't weather sealed is it. But the Shutter button area should be sealed and there is no reason for it.

Anyways good to hear that it's working now.

Isn't lens mount rust pretty serious? The metal mount on ur lens will often contact the rusted part and soon the mount on the lens will soon rust due to abrasion.

Internal parts that rust should get replaced, external ones can close one eye. Rust is like 'cancer' they spread.

At least there isnt a need to pay for the $$, plus free of charge for finding out the problems! and thats what matters I guess!

Hope your camera is all well now! :) Hooray! :)

I am not very into landscape but I'm amazed and fond of your pictures taken.

The filters GND 0.9 soft + GND 0.6 soft are LEE filters?
Now confused as I though GND just GND filters...

LEE is the brand of the GND filter.

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for your responses. :) Rest assured it's working now but the question is this: For how long?

Firstly, I apologise. Should've clarified earlier: the rust where it's happening is at the camera's lens mount, and not the mount of the 10-22 lens itself. The 10-22 is surprisingly... fine, after more than 7.5 years of service since 2006! It has been though alot of weather conditions and has not gotten a single problem at all.

I bought my 7D (according to the receipt which I kept in the original packaging) on December 17, 2009.

Anyway yes, to answer your questions I would generally keep a rag cloth in my camera bag as standby to clean my camera each time after a shoot at the beach. I would also at times if not in use, keep the 7D in my dry Digi-Cabi dry cabinet along with my lenses. I may consider using the isopropyl alcohol as edutilos mentioned (kinda thought about that for a while, but I thought the cloth would be ample enough) to clean my camera. But I must say, yes I do get a couple of splashes, but it's not until the whole camera gets drenched in the water or rain at all. The kind of splashes I get are droplets and that's just it; and they always land on my filters which can be cleaned, or at the sides of the camera where there are no openings. And it's weird, when this unfortunate event happens?

I don't get it. I did my part - I've cleaned it, took care of it and looked after it like a baby. I like how Canon advertised the 7D that has the, Oh-So-Great weather and environmental sealing capabilities as one of its main selling points besides the high 8 FPS rate. I'm starting to think there are certain limitations to what it can do, or probably not suitable for high humidity levels. And my 10-22 has survived for the whole 7 years and counting (And my other lenses also).

I'm guessing its the environment of the sea in Singapore? I guess salts in the sea air, combined with the general high humidity caused corrosion to happen? Sorry I'm not a science person. :(

In any rate, it's great to be back shooting once again. :) However in future, I'm gonna take extra steps to further enhance the sealing of my camera when shooting in the sea. Probably wrap it with a cloth or something... :/

Thanks everybody!!

Hey there,

Yep!! As tecnica mentioned, LEE is a brand of filters. Then there's Cokin and HiTech. However I use Cokin's Z121S for my GND 0.9 soft. It's cheaper and it's really good. :)

HiTech is great but colour casts are strong if you stack more than one of them.

Let me know if you need more info. :D
