squeaky sound on AFS focusing ring

Is there any change in focusing ring stiffness?
If it does, it can be a problem since the AF motor is a low torque type.

there is not stiffness at all. actually i totally believe everything is ok. just wondering which lens have such sounds.

2 of my AF-S lens 'squeeked', and 2 of them needed the SWM replaced....:(

:o

Could it be the grease dried up, then makes the motor works harder, then eventually kaput?

I remember not so long ago, some Nikon fanatics were putting down my report of SWM failure as being misleading.

The evidence is not only here but on Ebay and photo.net.

SWMs don't last very long and they don't even have to be abused to fail prematurely. At least in my post, I suggested a possible cause of failure.

Pretty certain. My 18-200Vr was kept at around 42% for quite some time, after that it started to squeak, then it jammed. I had to keep half pressing and waiting for at least several hours before it started to work again each time... and it squeaks quite badly. After that, I raised the RH to about 47% and the lens doesn't jam anymore, the squeak reduced but is still there. I guess there was already some damage done.

Hmmm.. looks like mine isn't as serious as yours. At least it is still working and did not cause any jam. But my RH is most of the time 47%:dunno:

Initially I thought it maybe due to dust obstructing inside. As you know, 18-200VR sucks dust in more than other lenes. After a series of AF, it get rid of the dust obstruction and hence squeaking disappear. However this is just my speculation.

17-35 squeakssssssssss,,,,and its 700 bucks to fix.:embrass:

hope you guys didnt not confuse between the AFS whizzing motor sound w this AF ring squeaky sound.

personally haven had a faulty SWM...however i ever tried a 17-35 in a second shop that has this whizzing sound...it was selling cheap at 1500 and the shop owner said very soon will need replace motor..thats why selling cheap.

the whizzing motor and the squeaky sound is 2 different thing that i am talking about.

i just bought the 55-200vr lens yesterday at 3:16. didnt check properly, now i realized theres the squeak everytime im focusing.. dunno whether its the focus ring squeak or the motor whizz as mentioned.. should i bring it back?

on my god now i  my new 17-55 and my wife 55-200vr also got that squeaky sound , dunno wat to do now , coz it onli 1 day old .

Looks like it's a common problem

Most AFS motor squeak is due to the dry up of the AFS motor. I notice this after I put my lenses at home where my aircon works almost 11hrs a day and my room hum. is always ard 45%. Previously I put my lenses in the office where somehow the hum. is ~58% and over the weekend where the air-con is off, it goes to ~70%.

IMHO, this is ok cos after the lens 'hunt' a little while, the squeak stops. In all cases, part of lens maintainence, is not to left the lens in the dry-cabi for too long. Always bring it out and play with it at least once a week, or bring it out to 'sun' often even you don't really need it for that particular shoot. Most ppl dun know that even lenses left in the dry cabi can get fungus grown inside it as the trap air internally of the lens is not really dry. As such, by 'playing' with the lens, eg focus, zoom-in/zoom-out often changes the trap air inside the lens. Should anyone like to know, the right hum level of your dry-cabi is best maintain between 55%-65%. Anything too dry may cause not only the grease to dry up, by also cause the rubber parts dry-up, inner-liner peeling, plastics parts to become brittle, etc. So the key is not too dry and also not too wet. :)

In all cases, NSC will not re-grease the dry-up AFS motor but changed it totally at a price of ~$700.

How the above info helps to clear some doubt among newbies. :)

Thank you for your enlightenment :)

thanks for the info!

so i shouldn't worry about the squeaks. haha..

"NSC will not re-grease the dry-up AFS motor but changed it totally at a price of ~$700. "

The AFS is with the kit len right? Or is it in the camera?

My 18-135 kit lens also have a "squeaking" sound during focusing.

Will NSC charge to rectify or check as i still have warranty. Its only abt 1month plus old. :(

For AF-S the motor is in the lens.

Try to increase the RH of your dry cabinet to around 48% and see if the problem goes away. It will cost quite a lot of money to replace the AF-S motor.

My dry cabinet is maintained at RH 49-50% already...Maybe got to increase higher? Near 55%?

Hmmm.. Try with another RH meter? If it's verified correct, then no choice lor.. leave at that setting. Anything higher you might run the risk of getting fungus instead.

ya.. got to test with another meter le. Thanks.
