S'pore Strobists?

Hey guys, just discovered this thread and I joined the SG strobist group too, keen on learning new flash techniques as I have to admit that my technical skill on flash photography is pretty bad : P

For a start, I'm thinking between getting those Made in China receivers or the Skyport now. Any idea where's the best place to get them and the approx price?

Am using skyports too.
300+ for transmitter & receiver set & 200+ for additional receiver.

I'm using the Impact triggers from China. Bought from Ruby Photo (Peninsular Hotel Shopping Centre), S$50 for transmitter or receiver. Works well enough for me.

Hmm yeah, I think I might go either impact or Skyports. What's the difference between the Ruby set and the other made in China 'Cactus' brand ones? The ruby ones look like a stick of gum rite?

No they look exactly the same, though the ruby one reads RF (or RM or smth) - 616, whereas the ebay ones read PT-04M. I've heard of cases where the PT-04M would spasm and glitch up, constantly firing the flash, which is irritating and drains power. Basically, the reliability of the china-ebay ones are low. Over the course of using my RF-616 triggers for the past 4 months, it's only glitched once (constant fire) and maybe for every 100 shots it'll fire off an extra flash, or not fire for one.

Cheers

Hmm that sound pretty reliable, I guess the Ruby ones sound like a pretty good alternative to the Skyports. Thanks!

I was reading up on the Strobist website, and I really like the small portable kit that he was proposing. What's the ideal height for a lightstand for a typical outdoor shoot and any idea where I should go to pick one up at a reasonable price?

I'm no expert, but just be aware ... that the smaller and lighter your light stand, the easier it would be for them to get blown over/away by the wind if you're using umbrellas or light-boxes. ;)

There's no fixed 'ideal' as different photographers prefer different set-ups. I've seen stand ranging from as low as a meter to those going about 2 meters.

Okie thanks for the advice, I guess what I'll do is look around slowly for a compact setup that will work. Quite inspired after reading Joe McNally's book hehe.

Glad to discovered this thread. Does anyone know where to get those color gels in singapore. Thanks.

i am trying out with cellophane. note that they will not be able to take heat well and they are not the right color temp if u wanna match ur tungsten or what.

YOu can go to Daiso...get plastic polyester (i think its polyester) transparent pieces that is about A4 size. Then cut it out to share with your frens....

Good idea. I will take a try. Thanks.

Count me in too. Just starting to get interested in flash photography. But it would be great if there is a topic or forum on where to buy the equipment (i.e. lightstands, brolly, etc etc). Both cheap, expensive, alternative, pros and cons, etc etc... At the moment, buying from Tago-Tech.. but the shipping cost is a little turn-off so I only do if I have no other choice. The problem is since I am new at this, I'm not familiar with alternatives.

So have you guys met up yet? It would be nice to have a "show & tell" session. :)

everyone seems to be rather low key at the moment. i am more than happy to meet up with anyone who wants to learn and share. :)

hey guys, have decided to join in the strobist movement too. gonna get some gear next few weeks. would be good if we can meet up!
