wonder y they say talk is cheap... but den this kind not exactly cheap...

My 5 cents worth:

Where basic rights are concerned, there is no such thing as absolute freedom. A person's right is basically translated into his responsibility toward another person's right.

A duty of care has to be established where rights are given. This duty of care is owe by the rights- receiver to either the general public and/or a specific member of public, who can be a total stranger.

As long as the duty of care is not breached, the rights remain in operation for the person. But in events where its breached, then the party-in-breach is liable for his action to the innocent party.

:)

I guess after these incident, more people will not want to express their views openly. And if they did, they will not reveal their true feeling & opinions.
I think we are going backward rather than towards a more open society. An open society is only a myth to most of us. :dunno:

I would say its more of a reflection of the maturity level of the society. However, it must be noted the giving of such rights (or freedom) is not a symbol of maturity. No matter how matured or tech- advance a society may be, such rights if given indiscriminately, will surely pose an amount of risks and dangers that are impossible to estimate. Legislation, in terms if laws and regulation, therefore must facilitate the process. National education also has an important part to play - cultivate the people's mindset to accept such an responsibility. The social-cultural environment will also, to a large extent, influences the efficiency of the changes that are being carried in the legislation and education environment.

In countries, eg Singapore, because of her complex inter-racial relationship within the population, the governement will be reluctant to grant such rights. Reason being it might ultimately affects the social fabric of the nation, if those rights are abused.

As a result of strict control, not many people like to talk about politics. They just leave it to the government since the govenment knows everything.

The same is true in local bussiness. Many controls & you get more or less the same kind of retail bussiness in singapore; unlike Taiwan where many kinds of small bussiness can take place. We have heard foreigners saying singapore is boring all the time. Simply due to extreme control & over regulations in our land.

We talk about "uniqure singapore" or building an exciting place to attract tourists. How to do that without reducing all those inhibiting rules & regulations? I think it is more appropriate to call it " Building castle in the air" or the chinese saying 'Zhi Sang Tang Bing'.

My sentiments exactly.

How to cultivate "critical thinking" when most of the time the "yes man" mentalitiy was instilled.

We were constantly remind to "think outside the box", but if the outside of this box is another bigger box...then how???

I can't help but worry about the future of my beloved country... :(

No need to say anything. The facts speak for itself.
