S'pore blogger sued

in today's ST, in a World Bank survey of 209 countries, Singapore scored 43.2 ranking(percentile) on political, civil and human rights vs other criterias eg. govt effectiveness, political stability, regulatory quality, rule of law and control of corruption. on these other criterias, singapore scored an average of above 90 percentiles.

why did we scored so badly, at 43.2 percentile on political, civil and human rights? puzzling, isn't it?

i have a blog, and i put what i want there. Since it's MY blog. But i do not comment on things and topics which i do not know. Eg. gahmen policies (not an expert on those, besides it could be boring, and i dun wanna attract too much attention...haha)

Basically it's a pretty much like an online diary. If someone doesn't like what i write, dun visit, dun read, go somewhere else. What for, you 'purposely' go and read, then find a reason/excuses to make an issue/pick-nit with the blogger? (backside itchy? haha)

Therefore i advise all bloggers to blog with a brain...principles. Don't blog blindly, don't which cuckoo out there is reading and would love to start ww3 with you. :sweat:

oh ya, thats another classic s'pore case. :bsmilie: its also sad to see this kind of actions. the Big Corporations can't seem to get an upper hand outside s'pore seas so they turn to their own people to vent that anger/fustration. sad sad scenerio....

common, this is ridiculous. That Chen Jiahao got a place in MIT and PSC rejected his application!!! no wonder he broke his bond in the end.

It is kind of sad to see the elite of singapore been turned away by our own country. I guess we will just have to foreign import more elite here I guess...

I have read the earlier link and if what is written there is true, I find the way that how Astar have handled the situation "dissappointing" to me.... for the lack of a safer word...

I happened to read the post Chen put up before Astar took action. When I read it, I immediately told my wife (who's a PSC scholar), that this guy is going to "get it". Different people may interpret differently, but in my opinion, I had the impression that he was "backmouthing". It was abit un-tactful, in my opinion.

One thing for sure, PSC must have a reason to reject Chen's MIT application. Hey, PSC has limited resources too. They can't be approving all kind of courses that these so-called scholars wanna take. One such application easily cost hundreds over thousands, and PSC must evaluate whether the course is relevant to Singapore benefits or not. I'm sure PSC is doing a reasonably good job.

Nothing personal, but were you there when his application was rejected? How do you know it was not rejected due to other reasons like,

1. His interview skills is horrible
2. He was late for the interview
3. He's too arrogant
4. etc etc

There are 1001 unknown reasons, and it's not fair that we jump sides down here when we don't know exactly what's going on.

Being a scholar doesn't means that the country gotta treat you like 1st class citizen. In fact, if so many years of studies only bring 1 to complain whole day long, without even thinking of the consequences. With such EQ, it's only fair that the opportunities should be given to some other canditates.

There's a very good reason why freedom of speech is limited, esp in singapore.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with A*STAR's response. There are 3 things that can happen once there is an allegation of defamation:

1) The alleged defamer "wins" and proves that what he has expressed is a fact, or is not defamatory to the other person.

2) The alleged defamer "loses" apologizes according to the defamed's terms, and possibly agrees to pay some form of compensation.

3) The case goes to court.

The blogger here, in my opinion, does not appear to have satisfied the first 2 options. He has not proved the fact, and personally I feel that his "apology" has been insincere and unrepentant. He apologized for remarks which "Mr Yeo felt were defamatory" as opposed to apologizing unreservedly for his actions. It suggests that Mr Yeo is being over-sensitive about such things. That's like saying "I'm sorry you felt that my punch on your face was painful" as opposed to "I'm sorry I punched you".

Since the initial apology was unsatisfactory, A*STAR was only left with option 3. I had very little sympathy for the blogger and I didn't like his tone either. He had his chance to resolve the issue and perhaps walk away with just a bruised ego. Instead, he chose to believe he has done no wrong, and refuses to back down. He's even appears to want to sue Channel News Asia!

I understand that he has since re-apologised unreservedly and according to A*STAR's terms so the matter is now considered closed. The blogger may be a bright fella and all, but, in my personal opinion, would do well to apply some of the intelligence to real-life situations!

That's interesting. I didn't get to read Chen's post, and neither apparently did the hordes of bloggers who immediately jumped to his defence, despite not knowing what he had in fact said. It was just a knee jerk reaction to "big brother bullying little brother", without ever considering that maybe, just maybe, little brother had been a jerk and deserved what was coming.

Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Of course, Chen did a good job at making himself out to be a victim, and had in fact gotten my sympathies initially.

Heheh, unless your bathroom have big big windows that other can see through. IMHO, others complain about that family not becaused they walked around smei-naked, more like they make pple puke, cos of the ugly belly etc. ;p

This is a classic example of stating a "fact" that has twisted the real facts of a case. It will definately mislead ppl into other wrongful conclusion and ideas.

Try to talk to exisiting scholars and find out how much choice/power they have over their existing careers/schools. The answer is clear.
