use Pre flash AF assist ... OMG ... it will blind the model or subject before the main flash .... Hai .. another "SMART" design by canon.
Well done ... give yourselve a pat on the shoulder .... CRAP !!!!

What's that's for man...?! A not here nor there flash.

Personally, I think it goes well with a compact like G10.

Yeah, quite likely pre-flash for AF assist. Think the old film EOS30/33 film camera built-in flash used this method too.

To use it on a DSLR is just so... lame. There's already a built-in flash on the xxxD and xxD flash. Who would pay another expected >S$200 more for a puny flash just so you can bounce but with limited guide number? Might as well pay a bit more and get a much more powerful and versatile 400 series flash.

As for the higher end cams, like 5D and 1D series, oh man... dun even talk about it! If you can afford such an expensive and relatively bulky cam, dun tell me your reason for buying this flash is cos you have little cash left, or you want to move around just that bit lighter and dun mind compromising on flash quality when you really need it!

Another Canon marketing.... It's time the engineers from the flash department talked amicably with their camera body department. Are they enemies? Incorporate IR communication between cam and flash without any gimmicky ST-E2!

Maybe Canon is making a quick buck out of unsuspecting newbies in this economy crisis by selling their looks-fun-but-limited use mini external flash. *tongue-in-cheek comment*

If I'm reading this correctly, the 450D is not compatible with this?

It mean, time for cam Upgarde....... canon sure clever in this area.

Only 145g, that's how much my kit lens weighs...

not everyone needs a 430ex or a 580ex. A GN of 27 is more than enough for fill flash. Even when shooting events you'll get a reach of 13.5 metres shooting at f2 at iso 100. Not great but good enough. I'm using a 380ex with a 400d and it does feel unbalanced without a battery grip. I considered getting a 220ex but stopped because the head is fixed. If the 270ex is cheap enough i'll get it to replace my 380ex.

Fair enough, indiviual needs I suppose.

If you are very sure fill-flash at longer distances is your main use for flash, then maybe. Personally, i think it's more worth it to pay that bit more for a more powerful flash and open up/cover more photo opportunities that you can't predict you will face.

In terms of price-to-performance and versatility, you lose out quite a bit. Some shortcomings I can think of is vignetting when longer lenses are used / slight possibility of red-eye unless bounced for both cases, in which case it may be powerful enough just for limited situations. And distracting AF assist if it really is from pre-flash.

Well, we'll see....

And no bounce flash when you do portrait...

Just get a Sunpak RD2000. Its now compatible with the 50D and 5DmkII.

Does it support G10?

Very handy, but small guide.

I hope that it can be used with 450D since it states all powershots and EOS users.

not sure how much it cost, but I will feel better will a 'full size' flash, even 3rd party one than a tiny - frog -like 270EX.
Sure using 420EX on my 400D is unbalanced without grip, but with a flash like this, you put your cam in portrait, you can't bounce it to the celling

Yeah, unless you have a white wall on your left...

What he meant is that 270EX is unable to swivel so when doing portrait format shots, the flash is not able to bounce the light off the ceiling.

True, not all people needs a 4xx or 5xx series flash and vice versa.

I just didn't like how they took out the AF assist (IR) beam. Pre-flash AF beams blind people.. by the time you get focus, people's eyes are already closed.

* Manual flash output (settable via camera menus)
* Speedlite controllable with compatible camera’s menu

Think only more recent EOS or Powershot camera have these flash control menu:

I am using a 5dm2 and already has a 580ex. However I think this new flash is a good idea from Canon and I will probably get one to use when I don't need a 580ex. Small and handy and light. Won't be surprised if this becomes Canon's best selling flash by units if the price is right.

Another use is when photographing in tight confinements, eg inside a car. Try bounce a 580EX, the flash will hit the roof!
